Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

“Ever since that day with Shieo, it's been happening. My biggest fear came to life that day and, in turn, almost took mine. I was able to win that battle. Since then, I've been pretty okay. Well, I was until recently.” explained the magenta-eyed girl as she painted the scene from recent recollection. “It was only a few days following the class that I noticed something was off. I kept waking night after night with the same... nightmare? Dream? It felt like neither, really. It was almost like a vision. I found myself in a forest confronted by a monstrous shadow. The entity before me meant harm to me, but with it also came an invitation. To what exactly? I wasn't sure. I felt no fear or concern, but that was because I felt the presence of a warm, bright light making its way toward us. I knew that once it came, the shadow would disappear. I would be safe.” The gypsy girl bit the edge of her lip and tapped her foot in rhythmic concern. “Whatever it is I'm dealing with, it poses no real trouble within itself. But the intensity of the visions and its occurrences are growing stronger each day. As a result, I haven't really slept. My training has been half-assed and it's even interfered with my flow of chakra.” She immediately stopped keeping tempo and gave the woman a tired. hopeful look. “Do you know what's wrong with me?”

Before Suika was a tiny old woman adorned with a colorful turban and an assortment of fine jewelry. Despite her bedazzlement, her fine wrinkles were her most noticeable attribute. Her cloudy eyes bulged from her sunken face as loose, wiry strands of silver hair fell over it. Her appearance frightened most as she resembled a wicked, aged witch; however, strangely enough, that was what attracted thousands of people to her within the years. Her aura of mystery was enticing; one could almost sense the other-worldly connection she had. The seer's mystifying nature tempted answer-seekers all over the globe. Suika was among those who sought guidance from the ghostly woman. It was convenient enough for her, too, because that hag was a member of the girl's old troupe. The fortune teller, Ichigo, slid her long, bony fingers along her crystal ball. She hummed a raspy tune as she gazed into the glowing ball. Suddenly, fog slowly formed in the room as it flashed like lightning. Most fell into awe with the fortune teller's showy display, but the gypsy girl's deadpanned expression revealed that she was not amused.

“Cut the act, old lady.” blurted out Suika as she slammed her hands on the round, curtained table. She then reached under the piece of furniture and pulled a plug. This instantly dispelled all “magical” effects in the room. “I already know your act is bogus, Ichigo. Just get on with it and I'll give you what was promised.” The old woman was unaffected by the girl's pessimism. As if still in the act, she unveiled the information that Suika wanted. “You, young child, must venture into the forest in person. Once there, you will find the solution to this prophetic riddle that haunts you.” Suika nodded intently. That was good enough for her. “Thank you, Ichigo. You may be a conman, but you actually do have a gift.” The girl tossed a sealed bag on the woman's table. It was filled with Suika and Ichigo's favorite snack: cups of green tea pudding. The fortune teller eagerly snatched the goods and peeked inside. “Piece of advise before I leave, Ichigo,” the youth added plainly as she stood and made her exit, “you know this place is a piece of garbage. Ringo is a crook that will even try to profit from your soon death. Pass away with some dignity, old lady.” Despite her word of caution, the seer shakily opened her pudding cup and shamelessly ingested one using her hand as a spoon. Suika shuddered at the sight and left the camp site.

“Forest... forest. Where can I find a forest?” she pondered as she made her way in Kumogakure. It was then that she vaguely recalled relevant information. You see, it has been a little over a month since Suika's been in Cloud village. When she was taken here to join the shinobi academy, she was given two zany guides that toured her around the village's many landmarks. Among those sites was the Ancient Forest. “That's somewhere I can explore. Maybe I'll find some answers there.” Suika knew that there were many forestland terrains all over the world, but she didn't have time to research which matched her dreams most. Even if a shot in the dark, she seized the opportunity presented and prayed for desirable results. The girl needed her sleep back. After some time traveling with chakra-enhanced mobility, Suika made her entrance into the Ancient Forest. Signs were posted everywhere that warned on lurking creatures that posed potential threat to anyone venturing into its depths. With her shinobi gear equipped and readied, the gyspy girl was not afraid. Suika was self-assured she could take on any monster that lurked in this forest. She was confident, but the student also decided to keep her wits about her. It was unfamiliar territory, so it was better to be overly cautious than not. “Ok, where to begin...?”

Where was she to start?

Normally, Suika would have had a game plan followed by backups. The youth, in her current sleep-deprived state of mind, didn't do so. She had no clue as to where to look for the information she needed. This caused her to wander aimlessly for the next hour or so. “Where am I going? Ugh.” The Ancient Forest, to her, looked the same at every turn. It was vast and, in a sense, gave this grand-nature vibe that called for its respect. The calls of the wild echoed throughout the trees as the occasionally shuffle of a bush or snap of a branch was clearly heard. Again, Suika wasn't scared one bit by this. She was practically fear-repellent at this point. Well, until she stumbled upon it. “Who are you? Reveal yourself!” called out the girl with unrestrained authority.

Moments before this occurrence, the animals grew silent as bird flapped frantically away from Suika's general vicinity. It was then that she felt a very familiar presence. It was dark, sinister, and was watching watching her every move. Whatever it was, she decided to spotlight it before it made itself known. But it remained silent as time briefly froze in place. The gypsy drew out her knife and entered an anticipated battle-ready stance. She scanned the area thoroughly, but she found nothing. She knew she wasn't in the clear yet, her instincts told her someone was still.

That is when the student heard a high-pitched cry. “What the-” And then out came a giant shadow. It burst through the heavy covering of the forest's trees and rushed at Suika. Although it was in an instant, she caught glimpse of its form. The creature before her appeared as a fifteen by fifteen ball of darkness with thin tendrils sprouting from it. She didn't witness any distinguishable features; to her untrained eyes, it was just a giant blob of evil aura. The gypsy girl expertly tossed her knife at the being, but it went through it as if the monster was ethereal. “Crap.” It lunged at her, but Suika was able to gracefully evade. She rapidly formed seals and attempted to trap the shadowy mass in an illusion. It failed. “Mommy can't protect you anymore, Mystic.” A chill-inducing tri-toned voice echoed throughout the forest area from every direction. She wasn't able to process its cryptic message at the moment, but part of her wondered what the heck it was talking about. “Gotcha.”

Tendrils sprouted from the ground and wrapped around the tan-skinned gypsy. She struggled to release herself from the restraint, but its grasp on her was too powerful. She was trapped. “Join me. Gift me with your untapped power, Mystic.” It pulled her toward itself. “Over my dead body!” spat Suika in frustration as she clenched her teeth. His shadowy limbs fully enveloped her into a type of cocoon. It went black.

“Much better…” Shukuya hummed happily, grinning at his new attire as he stepped out of one of the many shops that dotted the Dawnbringer’s Plaza. After entering the village, he had spent the evening in a cheap and slightly sketchy hotel, and set out the following morning to run a few errands. His first stop had been a clothing store to purchase a new wardrobe suitable for the wintery village His Lord had sent him to.

The priest had exchanged his old clothing for a thick, red winter coat over a long sleeved white shirt and a pair of double layered black cargo pants. He’d even picked up a shinobi mask that covered most of his face below his eyes in black cloth. All in all, he considered it money well spent. The cold mountain air was still biting, but he could actually enjoy the weather without freezing his cheeks off for the first time in days.

Weaving through the crowded plaza,Shukuya tucked his hands into the pockets of his new jacket and glanced upwards. The sun sat high in the sky, accompanied only by a few stray clouds. He figured it was still a couple of hours before noon, leaving him plenty of time to head to his next destination before it was time for lunch.

If he was going to stay in the village for any length of time, he’d need a steady source of income and a place to stay. Fortunately, the Priest had plenty of skills beyond killing monsters and a few ideas on where he might find a solution to his housing problem. However, before he could further consider his situation, Kotowari sung at his side.”What’s gotten into you, huh?” Shukuya questioned the blade curiously, and rested his hand on it’s hilt in an attempt to quiet it.

Almost instantly, his mind was assaulted with a flurry of images, and he swayed on his feet. He saw a young girl walking through a forest, and a shadow lurking behind her. A wraith protected her, but it was fading, and the monster lept forward to consume her. Someone was calling him, someone he should know, but he couldn’t place it and before the priest could even try to remember he found himself back on the street with a quiet gasp.

Blinking, Shukuya shook his head and tried to clear the fog from his thoughts. His Lord hadn’t given him a vision in some time, much less one so vivid and with such a sense of urgency. Someone was in danger, and his Lord had given him a warning. “I need to find that girl…” He muttered under his breath, and Kotowari hummed in agreement. The priest knew she had to be nearby, but the village was still unfamiliar to him. He had seen the beginnings of a forest in the northeastern district of the village while he was finding his way around the day before, but he had no real idea if that was where he needed to go.

Yet it was his best bet, and Shukuya quickly set off. Getting through the crowds and the winding streets of Kumogakure without drawing attention took longer than he’d liked, but soon enough he broke through the sprawl and made his way to the Nimbus Delectatio. The Ancient Forest loomed in the distance, and he came to a stop in a field some ways away from the treeline. Kotowari gleamed, signalling that he was where he needed to be. Now to find the girl.

“Alright then.”

Clapping his hands together, Shukuya drew upon the Blessing, and his normally purple eyes burned gold, flickering with holy light. His Lord’s greatest gift granted him many abilities, but perhaps the most important at the moment was that it allowed him to sense the monsters he hunted. And sense them he did. ‘This is the place..’ Shukuya thought to himself, eying the forest warily. He might’ve missed it if he hadn’t been looking for it, but something was off. It wasn’t a demon, he knew that much. The twisted malice he associated with the creatures was absent. Instead it was something more subtle, and perhaps more insidious. It was like staring into the void, but something stared back, and it was hungry.

‘....A Preta? How did a little girl manage to attract a Hungry Ghost?’ Shukuya nearly cursed. Pretas were the spirits of men who had been ruled by lust and greed in life, and committed great crimes. The Gods damned them to wander the world, haunted by an endless hunger that they could never satisfy. Most simply languished, enduring their punishment until the Gods saw fit to lift it, but others found that they could find some relief in feeding from humans. These spirits became twisted, corrupted monsters that became increasingly dangerous over time, and their favorite targets happened to be those with strong spiritual energy. He had ran into more than a few in the past, the creatures drawn by his own power, and they had always been annoying to deal with.

Shukuya had to find her, and quickly. If not, she’d end up a snack, and that wasn’t something he would allow. Flickering into the forest with a burst of speed, he darted through the trees, racing toward where the hunger was the strongest. With the Blessing enhancing his movements, it took only a few moments to reach his destination, and what he saw when he arrived in the clearing made his blood boil. The Preta, an emaciated humanoid creature with a grotesquely bulging stomach, had captured the girl in tendrils of shadow and was preparing to feed. His arrival didn’t go unnoticed, and the beast shifted it’s tiny head in his direction, hissing.

‘You!’

“Me.” Shukuya growled, and drew Kotowari from its scabbard with a single, sweeping motion. The ornate katana gleamed, it’s pure white blade shining even in the gloom of the forest.

‘You can’t have her, Priest! She’s mine! I’ve been waiting for years! YEARS!!!’

“She’s not yours to have, beast.” Shukuya declared harshly, pointing his blade at the creature. “You committed great evil in life, and rather than enduring your punishment, you’ve chosen to prey on the innocent. That-” In an instant the fullness of the Blessing exploded around him, a mantle of holy white flame wreathing his body in radiance. It’s light seemed to burn away the shadows, and the monster recoiled instinctively, realizing too late exactly what it was dealing with. “-Is something that I can’t forgive. So disappear!”

‘Wait! No! PLEASE!’

“Ikari!”

Kotowari shined like the sun, but for a moment nothing seemed to happen. Then the world burned, seemingly vanishing in a blinding flash of holy energy. The corrupted form of the Preta was incinerated instantly, it’s dying shrieks silenced as it was reduced to nothing more than ashes on the wind. “Good riddance…” Shukuya spat, sheathing his blade as the light faded.

With the threat dispatched, the priest turned to the girl, who was now freed from her shadowy prison. His countenance softened as he looked her over. She was young, probably no older than 9 or 10, with dark skin and black hair. Something about her seemed familiar, but he had no idea of where he might’ve met her before. Seeing the girl sway on her feet, Shukuya tore himself from his thoughts and flickered to her side, grasping her shoulder and allowing her to lean against him.

“You alright there, little one?”

Darkness... a pitch-black void... oblivion. Where was she?

Everything around her revealed nothing, but that nothing unveiled it all somehow. Her body floated lifelessly within the vast shadows as her consciousness drifted in and out. It all seemed hazy and unreal - she lost a sense of self. Suika felt her existence, but the shell of it lacked manifestation. She also felt cold as she sank further into the darkness.

A bright light pierced through. Like glass, the netherworld she temporarily inhabited shattered. Her glowing magenta eyes flung wide open as she let out a panicked gasp. “Demon!” she cried as she shoved the silver-haired priest that held onto her side. Upon touch, he would notice that her skin felt like ice. Her physical body was affected by whatever it was that she went through. With her reflexes intact, she utilized her proficiency in acrobatics and tumbled away from the stranger. She clenched her teeth and shot at him a maddened, provoked glare. It took a few seconds for the high dose of adrenaline to settle. When her mind's vision finally cleared, her expression softened ever-so-slightly. Clarity operated as a tool of reason in her approach. “Who are you?” she questioned less threateningly. Normally, the girl would remain in tension, but some type of otherworldy insight told her that she was now safe.

Suika also carried a look of curiosity as she examined the boy in front of her. His presence felt familiar, yes, but she was most taken by the subtle, yet radiant aura that enveloped him. Unbeknownst to her, her pupils mirrored the same as her eyes continued to release a lantern-like glow. “What is that light around you?” The student was thinking way too many thoughts at once. She was still somewhat disoriented by her near-consumption, so she wasn't as sharp-minded and swift to act as usual. Suika awaited the stranger's response.

“Ooof” Shukuya grunted in surprise, stumbling as the girl seemed to come back to her senses and shoved him away with a startled cry. She flipped away in an impressive display of acrobatics, before coming to a stop a bit away and shooting him a threatening glare. Well, she obviously intended for it to be threatening, anyways. But on a girl her age, Shukuya just found it to be adorable, and slightly alarming. She was obviously still under the effects of the Preta’s influence. He figured Ikari would’ve purged any bit of the monster’s power from the girl and healed any ill effects, but it seemed something still lingered. ‘I need to calm her down enough for her to let me help her.’

“Hey there, you’re alright. The ‘demon’ is gone, I took care of it.” He assured the girl. “My name is Shukuya.” Tugging down the mask that covered most of his face, Shukuya offered the girl a grin. His smile widened slightly when the girl questioned his aura, and he noted the odd glow to her eyes. That explained a few things. He knew the girl was special, after all his Lord had taken an interest in her and she’d managed to attract a Preta of all things. She had an obvious affinity for the supernatural side of the world, and now he had an idea of what exactly she was.

“That’s a bit of a complicated question. Most people can’t see it, you know?” Shukuya told the girl. Holding out his hand, he summoned a bit of the Blessing, the holy energy once again taking the form of a white flame. With a gesture, the flame sparked and he created a small blaze between them. It wasn’t true fire, so there was no heat, but to the girl it would probably feel warm regardless as it burned away the impurities left by the spirit. “Why don’t you take a seat and tell me your name?” The priest asked, gesturing to a spot by the fire as he took his own advice, unceremoniously plopping down onto the cold earth. “It’ll take the chill out and I’ll try and explain a few things.”

“My name is Suika.” she answered absentmindedly as her thoughts briefly wandered elsewhere. It was difficult for the gypsy girl to take in all that had occurred. A slayed demon, a tan-skinned man with a shining aura, and the repetitive vision she had prior to this that led her here - she realized that none of this was coincidental. It was almost a little too spooky for her taste. Regardless, she had many questions that needed answers. Suika was usually circumspect of strangers, but she had to entertain this man, now revealed as Shukuya, and listen to what he had to share.

She cloaked herself in her own aura of cautiousness as she sat by the stranger's flaming conjuration. It didn't produce actual warmth, but with its presence, she noticed, was a more light atmosphere. Unbeknownst to her, the student's guard slowly loosened as time passed. There was something about him she just couldn't put her finger on.

“So, tell me, Shukuya,” she shot out without much discretion, “you mentioned I was attacked by a demon. You also have claimed to have ended its life. A shadowy monster, a friendly Samaritan with seemingly benevolent intentions...” Suika crossed her arms and squinted her stern eyes. The tone that coated her words were mixed with forced aggression and suspicion. “What is your link in all this? Who are you really and what are your intentions?” She upheld a determined, powerful stare at the kind priest. Her conviction was clearly strong, but she wasn't as peeved as she physically conveyed. It was more of an attempted intimidation tactic than anything.

“You see, I've had these visions...” she immediately pursed her lips together. She did not mean to reveal that information at all. She was always calculating and careful, but some inner voice was almost scolding her to be more translucent. It translated to the girl involuntarily sharing more details than anticipated. Suika pushed back at the vocalizations in her head. “Bug off,” she thought with some irritation. Being the performer she was, she was able to mask her minor annoyance. Her composure remained as she awaited Shukuya's response.

“Suika, huh?” Shukuya hummed, and tapped his fingers against the earth. He thought about teasing the girl for having such a cute name, but he thought better of it, at least for now. He’d let the Blessing run its course before he tried to rile her up. ‘And it seems to be working well enough.’ He thought idly as the girl joined him on the ground, some of the tension leaving her. He’d have to subtly check for any traces he might’ve missed later, but he was fairly confident by the time things wrapped, any surprises the Preta might’ve left behind would be taken care.

Turning his attention to Suika as she began barraging him with questions, Shukuya had to resist the urge to laugh at the girl’s attempt to be serious and intimidating. It seemed that bit of attitude was all her, and it was still absolutely adorable. Her last statement derailed that particular train of thought, however. “You’ve been having visions?" Shukuya asked Suika with interest, grinning as his earlier suspicions were all but confirmed. This girl, Suika, was a medium. A particularly powerful one at that if she was having visions and attracting spirits at her age. No wonder his Lord had been so interested in the girl!

“You and I aren’t so different then!” Shukuya chirped brightly, learning forward eagerly. “I’m a Priest. The shiny aura? That’s the Blessing, the touch of divinity that comes with being a servant of the Gods. It lets me do all sorts of things, like creating this fire, healing wounds and disease, or enacting holy rites to incinerate my enemies.” He gestured to the spot where the spirit ceased to exist with a bit of flourish. “Your...admirer got to experience the last one personally.”

Realizing that he was rambling a bit again, Shukuya got to the point.

“It also allows the Gods to give me visions, like the one that led me to you. I was running errands in the village when they showed me a girl being hunted by a spirit in a forest. My Lord was particularly insistent that I intervene. ‘My link’ in this is the same as yours.” His tone was still cheery, but it grew more intense as he continued. “Though your visions are likely from something a bit….different. Tell me, do you know what a medium is?”

Suika's curious eyes flickered with the dancing flames as the priest told his tale. Suddenly, an already odd situation became increasingly more bizarre. The gypsy had encountered the supernatural before alongside the seer of her old troupe, Ichigo, but she never paid much mind to it else wise. Prior to her visions, she never ran into spirits, ghosts, or demons. And the Lord?

“I'm athiest.” she asserted with her arms still crossed. The man's story was convincing, but she realized it was solely due to his powerful self-belief. He was a devout... maybe a zealot. Life was convoluted enough with what was physically around her. She wanted nothing to do with this, she decided.

“I know what a medium is and I appreciate you saving me,” she stood and brushed her pants, “but you probably got the wrong girl. Yes, I have had visions, but maybe it derived from that demon thing. I guess he wanted me here so he could eat me.” She sent out a small head bow. “It was just bad luck. But again, thank you, Shukuya.”

She then made her exit with a wave. Suika would lend him an ear if he had any lasting remarks, but she'd leave regardless. She had to - some part of her screamed to run away as far as possible. Was it her old survivalist's instinct? Probably. She was not interested in discovering any hidden powers or taking a casual stroll in otherworldly business. Besides, she had a Genin exam to prepare for.

Shukuya couldn’t help it. He snorted when Suika declared she was an atheist. The girl lived in a world of magical ninja and had nearly been eaten by a demon, yet she denied the Gods? She reminded him way too much of himself when he was that age. He’d cared little for the supernatural or the Shrine’s tales of the Gods when he was a boy. Now he knew better, but the irony was fantastic.

Fate really did have a sense of humor

“Do you really?” Shukuya asked Suika as she stood, watching the girl with amusement. “I’m not talking about fortune tellers or magicians. True mediums are far more than that. But I can tell you won’t be swayed, for now.” The Priest returned her bow with a nod of his head, his grin never fading even as she turned away. He wondered what it’d take for the girl to realize the truth. Hopefully nothing so traumatic as what happened to him.

He blinked.

Who was he kidding? Suika was going to draw in every spirit, ghost, and demon she came across, and things were inevitably going to be messy. Yet as much as he wanted to protect the girl, it would be her battle to fight when the time came. Those touched by the supernatural never lived easy lives, and she’d have to learn to stand on her own strength if she wanted to survive.

That didn’t mean he couldn’t help her though. His Lord had brought them together for a reason, after all.

“When the times, and you want to understand what you really are, come find me.” Shukuya called to the girl before she walked out of sight. Not expecting a reply, Shukuya pulled himself to his feet and extinguished the flame with little more than a thought. Fate would bring the girl to him in time, that much he knew. Now, he needed to get his own affairs in order.

“Now….Where can I find a shrine?”
