Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

This is my first training, but it's my understanding that I will receive as Yen stipend of 5,000 (A-Rank) and 35 ASP. I'd like to devote all of the ASP into my Stamina stat (271 --> 306). Thank you.

Satoshi was thoroughly impressed as he watched the student handily subdue the wild beast. Perhaps it had been a tad reckless to expect a pupil no older than 10 to seriously combat a vicious animal incapable of human mercy. Satoshi’s trepidation was rendered moot, however, as he observed Omoi employ both strategy and an intangible fighting prowess in a remarkable effort to overpower and entirely subjugate his foe.

“Splendid fighting, Omoi. Your performance has awed me and filled me with optimism for Cloud Village’s future shinobi.” Satoshi cleared his throat and ensured that the beast he had clobbered on the nose was long out of sight before continuing. “The wolf that dared to strike me has been sent scurrying away with his tail between his legs. I’d contend that your opponent has fared even worse, and hopefully you succeeded in instilling some much-needed humility in its canine brain. Nonetheless, these animals do not possess wicked hearts, they simply know no better. Release him and let the hound run away in shame. He can spread the word among his pack to never attack the people of Cloud Village ever again.”

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning shot across the jet black sky and the roar of thunder rocked all of the forest below. The dark clouds far overhead finally decided to unleash their burden, and a deluge of rainfall descended upon all the denizens of the woods. Frowning, Satoshi lifted his hood back over his face in a futile effort to mitigate the downpour.

“I previously pledged that ‘I will be entirely honest with you’ and I maintain my commitment to those words…for this inclement weather, while unfortunate, was not altogether unforeseen. In fact, the strong likelihood of rainfall partly influenced my decision to teach at this blasphemous hour, because where I fail to challenge you, the elements will surely offer no clemency."

Satoshi pulled out a mysterious gadget from beneath his gray robes, and holding it up to the sky, another flash of lightning cut through the darkness and revealed it to be an umbrella! “This little amenity here would be an awfully nice thing to have for weathering a storm. But I did not bring it for my own benefit. Take this umbrella for yourself and prove your own worth as a shinobi, though I do implore you to waste no time since I don’t exactly want to get soaked over here.”

Satoshi turned his hooded head towards the great oak tree where he had patiently waited for Omoi’s arrival. It had to stand approximately 130 feet in the air and towered majestically above its many imposing neighbors. Satoshi leapt gracefully to the lowest branch of the oak, then zipped from limb to limb until at last he stood atop the canopy and draped the umbrella’s handle around the tallest branch of the tree. Omoi had a rigorous climb ahead of him to obtain his prize, and it didn’t help that the thunderstorm had drenched the tree branches and left many of them slippery and unstable.

The incessant *plop, plop* of the falling raindrops was interrupted by an abrupt roaring sound, as five bears lumbered out from behind the trees and began charging at Omoi. They too had been stirred by all the commotion, and while prowling for an early morning snack, Omoi must have looked especially appetizing for they rushed at him with a frenzied celerity.

“Omoi! Climb up here as fast as you can,” yelled Satoshi with a startled yelp, though he was too far above in the treetops to offer immediate help. “Do not attempt to fight those beasts – and that’s an order. They are far too numerous and gargantuan in size. Retrieve this umbrella and we can deal with them later.”

Hi, I'd like to submit this post for training (552 words) --> link
Otome’s arrival caught Satoshi by surprise, and he briskly lifted his head up from his papers to identify the source of this greeting. Standing before Satoshi was a young woman, only a few years his junior, with long blonde hair and a curiously imposing presence. Word of the festive ceremony bringing life once more to the venerable Banquet Hall had clearly spread far already, for the burgeoning Anbu had dressed for the occasion with dazzling sartorial elegance.

“Your presumption is correct. I’ve never been a fan of formalities so please call me Satoshi. Assuming that you’re Shinigawa Otome, let us get straight to business.” Satoshi beamed a quick smile and gestured towards the shaded bench as he marched in that direction. Sitting down, he began flipping through his stack of papers and handed selected sheets to his companion.

“I’ll begin by explaining our missi…sorry, I mean our lesson. Then I can elaborate on the mundane, logistic details later. It’s only once in a blue moon that the Banquet Hall opens to host a celebration, but the event never fails to impress with an extravagance and luxury beyond our wildest dreams. The Cloud Village elite have paid a small fortune to import the world-famous Chef Pierre from faraway lands to furnish a marvelous cuisine of exotic dishes for tonight’s gala. We could travel for incalculable miles in any direction and never encounter meals as authentic as his, so we cannot let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity slip past us.”

Satoshi was practically salivating as he rapidly thumbed through his papers, and eventually he pulled out a large sheet and showed it to Otome. “This is the structural blueprint of the Banquet Hall. First things first, you can see that there is a massive foyer directly through the entrance. At the far west end of the foyer is a doorway to the kitchen, where Chef Pierre does his magic. On the opposite side of the foyer to the east is an employee breakroom, which will be important later but let’s not dwell on trifles. To the very north of the foyer is the dining hall where tonight’s celebration is taking place.”

Satoshi dropped the map in Otome’s lap for her further perusal and abruptly stood up. He pulled out an obscure article of clothing from his deep pockets and fastened it around his waist, and suddenly in full display Satoshi could be seen wearing a waiter’s waist apron. He continued speaking aloud as he paced to a nearby tree and began fidgeting with something behind it.

“Chef Pierre is renowned for his preeminent specialty: the hot dog. An ambrosial delicacy beyond mere peasant tastes, I posit that no self-respecting man or woman could consider themselves a true shinobi without tasting from this gourmet marvel of the world. We have to sneak in, retrieve a sample, and abscond back to this location completely undetected.”

Satoshi wheeled back a squeaky dining cart with an enormous serving tray sitting on top. A resplendent silver lid with an elegant handle completely covered and concealed the contents of the dish. “Time is running short, and we’re about to initiate phase one of our tutoring session. Do you have any questions or desired information before we head into the lion’s den, for once we enter those doors there is no turning back?”

Satoshi continued preparing the dining cart with a detached expression as Otome unleashed her grievances upon her piteous instructor. “Rice, water…I concur, those make very humble meals,” mused Satoshi aloud as he crouched down to assemble some silverware on the bottom shelf. His tone was conversational and polite, yet simultaneously aloof. “All the more reason to be excited for this lesson. If neither one of us screws up, we shall dine like royalty!”

At last Satoshi seemed satisfied with his toiling, and standing back up he placed both hands atop the silver lid which resonated with a hollow ring. “You don’t strike me as the type who requires palaverous explanation, and that’s excellent because we have scarcely more than 30 minutes before the first guests arrive. We must act with haste, and I trust an Anbu to think well on her feet when my instruction is lacking.”

With one nimble swoop of his hands, Satoshi lifted the lustrous cover off of the serving tray. Nothing but empty space was exposed after this dramatic reveal – a completely flat platter of sterling silver built to unusually large proportions.

“I apologize if these accommodations are somewhat…cozy, but I must graciously request that you lay upon this silver tray here while I hide you under the lid. If you’ve ever heard the tale of the ‘Trojan Horse’ you can likely extrapolate on my machinations.” Satoshi gestured meekly towards the empty tray, compunctious in the knowledge that his entreaty was indeed unpleasant and inhospitable. However, Satoshi was rapidly approaching the age of 20 which in shinobi years felt nearly 80, and he concluded that the clandestine act of infiltration was much better entrusted to an intrepid, young Anbu-in-Training than a washed-up old fogey like himself.

Assuming Otome complied with his earnest request, Satoshi ensconced his pupil beneath the spacious silver cap and began rolling the laden dining cart up to the Banquet Hall’s doorstep. “Let me explain some brief details before we must depart,” whispered Satoshi leaning close to the lid where Otome could hear. He pushed the cart slowly in an attempt to ensure a gentle ride, but despite painstaking efforts the terrain beneath was rough and the cutlery hanging from the bottom shelf jingled with every turn of the wheels.

“Once you’ve entered the foyer, you must slip out surreptitiously and navigate directly westward to the end of the room. When you reach this destination, you will be standing before the door to the kitchen. Knock three times upon this door, and hopefully I will have arrived from the back in time to let you in.”

Satoshi grimaced as he reached a shallow flight of stairs which he had to ascend. The dining cart rattled and shook as he climbed up, but after brief turbulence they hit solid ground again and Satoshi continued expatiating.

“No guests have entered yet, but the foyer will be bustling with employees and laborers preparing the event for the night. In your elegant dress you will stand out like a purple tomato, so assess the situation and think creatively in order to maneuver the long distance without being seen. And should somebody stop you, I trust that your Anbu training has adequately prepared you to escape from the nuisance without making a scene.” Satoshi paused briefly and continued rolling the cart across a pleasantly smooth patch of grass in silence. The end of their trek was close at hand, and finally he resumed speaking. “I’ve never seen the interior of the Banquet Hall and cannot describe its layout beyond what I showed you on the blueprints. I imagine it’s magnificent, but whatever it looks like, use your imagination to avoid certain danger.”

The cart stopped with a jangle, and Otome could sense Satoshi’s presence step some distance away from the silver tray. “Hey, it’s the boss man!” yelled Satoshi loudly as he approached an elderly man standing impatiently beside the front door. “My name is Hayate! I am the head caretaker of this residence, and you lowly grunts had best learn to treat me with respect” roared a gravelly voice incensed with rage. Otome could not observe the conversation between the two men beneath the silver lid, but the interlocutors spoke audibly and their voices were clearly discernable.

“My apologies, sir. My name is Satosh-”

“Silence!” bellowed Hayate with gesticulations so exaggerated that his handkerchief leapt out of his tuxedo pocket and his gray toupee shifted upon his head. “I am the only important one here. You waiters are completely useless and I could replace you so fast that your head would spin. And not only are you worthless; you’re late!”

With his last exclamation, Hayate lifted the cane he had been leaning upon and whacked Satoshi flat across the head. Satoshi fell upon one knee with a groan, and his glasses were sent flying across the ground and landed next to the dining cart. He swiftly maneuvered back to pick up his spectacles, and still leaning over, stealthily whispered one final set of instructions to Otome.

“If everything else that I mentioned went through one ear and out of the other, take grave caution not to forget these last words of advice,” muttered Satoshi in a somber tone that was a striking far-cry from the light-hearted cheerfulness he had conversed with all evening. “Under no situation should you taste from the hotdogs until we have safely vacated the premises. You will soon be entrusted to carry them, and the temptation could be excruciating, but for reasons that I cannot yet explain, please do not eat them. Good luck.”

With those final words of parting, Satoshi the waiter stepped away and moved on to accomplish his part of the objectives, whatever that could possibly entail. Hayate snorted and grabbed the dining cart with a harsh grip by the handle, rolling it gratingly through the front door where he slammed it next to a wall and then bustled away beyond where Otome could find him. Beneath the silver lid, Otome could hear the foyer rustling loudly with assiduous activity as workers busily prepared the festivities for the night.

Post for Training (842 words) --> link
Satoshi sidestepped danger with a sprightly haste as a stampede of 20 or so chefs chased after him swinging razor-sharp meat cleavers. He danced nimbly around the side-kitchen and leapt from table to table, commandeering whatever makeshift weapon was within reach to turn against his pursuants. Satoshi tore down pots and pans hanging from the walls and launched them across the room, though he was scrupulous not to land any serious blows for these cooks were honest workers and justifiably perturbed at Satoshi for wrecking their dishes.

Confident that his little diversion furnished Otome adequate time to complete her objective, Satoshi kicked through a glass window and landed outdoors at the far west-end of the Banquet Hall. The sky had grown considerably dimmer than when the two shinobi had entered only a passing while ago, and the evening sunshine had all but vanished. Satoshi observed a cavalcade of extravagantly dressed patrons pouring into the entrance, though this was a sizable distance away where no one could discern him through the obfuscating murkiness of nightfall. Under the stygian horizon, Satoshi raced around the circumference of the Banquet Hall and abruptly encountered a familiar face as he curved behind the posterior end of the grand edifice.

“H-Hey! It’s that slacker from earlier! Why the hell aren’t you shining our guests’ shoes as they enter?!” barked Hayate as he lifted his stout wooden cane again.

Satoshi grinned and continued sprinting without the slightest deviation from his intended direction. Within a few fleeting seconds, Satoshi and Hayate were face-to-face and the aged caretaker swung his cane at the running shinobi. He missed, for Satoshi had leapt at the last second and landed on Hayate’s face with one foot, nimbly careening off with the other in a complete somersault and hastened along at an undisturbed pace. Hayate plummeted to the grass face-first and was neutralized from the pursuit, and Satoshi swiftly arrived at the east end of the Banquet Hall which he entered with no time lost.

The employee break room was a prosaic, practical room of rectangular shape with sparse lighting and even fewer windows. The walls were lined with lockers, and located in the center was a plastic table topped with several overflowing ashtrays and flanked by cheap, fold-up chairs. Somebody’s leftover pizza lay neglected upon the linoleum floor, and suffice to say, the break room for staff paled in luxury compared to the decadent interiors reserved for the guests.

Satoshi strolled through the lugubrious domicile alone and mentally reviewed his objectives. The break room had been entirely vacated by employees occupied with their various tasks, so Satoshi felt confident that he and Otome could strategize undisturbed. He had previously received reliable intelligence that the esteemed Chef Pierre was involved in a blackmail scheme with some shady characters whom were targeting Cloud Village’s elite society. The entire persona of Chef Pierre was, in fact, a contrivance and even his accent and wax mustache were phony. His true identity was that of a lackluster local chef named Yoshitaro Pieru, who originated not from “faraway lands” as advertised but from Cronopolis, and had been busted by Satoshi in a similar criminal enterprise. Pieru had successfully reinvented his image as an exotic chef and fooled the credulous aristocrats of Kumogakure into paying him top dollar, however fame and fortune failed to rehabilitate his underhanded ways and he remained attached to criminal underworld. Apprehending Pieru would be an effortless task but Satoshi was more interested in discovering the identities of other conmen and individuals of low repute with whom he might be colluding.

Five thuds resonated from the thick wooden door in quick succession, and Satoshi promptly welcomed his accomplice inside. The two ninjas sat briefly at the plastic table while he relayed the true identity of Chef Pierre and his background to Otome, and Satoshi waited patiently while Otome explained whatever she thought pertinent from her own intelligence gathering.

“The whole purpose of this tutoring session was to refine both of our abilities at espionage and reconnaissance, and based upon all that we’ve discovered I’d contend that it was a very successful endeavor. We are not under orders to arrest and certainly not to eliminate any observed criminals, but rather all that we’ve unearthed should be reported to your friends at the Anbu for them to take swift action. It is auspicious that we’ve replaced the doped hotdogs, however, because we might have truly averted a serious crisis here tonight.”

Satoshi rose from his fold-up chair and cleared his throat before continuing. “I will be departing now, for I have learned all the information which I sought and I do not wish to risk further detection. I has been a pleasure conducting this operation with you, and I hope the mission-style exercise was beneficial to your training as an Anbu. I must fly now, but you have full permission to continue gathering intel if you think it germane. Until next time!”

Satoshi nodded his head, transformed into a hotdog once more, and sprinted away into the twilight outside.

Educating Kumogakure’s future shinobi was an exhausting venture and Satoshi still felt fatigued from his previous forays attempting to instill wisdom and skill in some talented youngsters. There existed too much liability in the endeavor nowadays. If he joined the Anbu and killed people he’d be hailed as a hero, but heaven forbid he lose a student or two while teaching them some particularly ambitious lesson. Today Satoshi planned to take things a bit easier, primarily because he needed the rest, but also since killing off ninjas in their formative years rendered them useless for defending Cloud after Satoshi had retired.

Satoshi had situated himself in the center of a large, vacant field of freshly trimmed grass. Typically this expanse would be devoted to sports or recreation but Satoshi was assiduously engaged in assembling an elaborate obstacle course. Certainly he had a lesson planned for the intrepid young student Takagi Shuya, but first his pupil would have to reach him first.

A stalwart barricade of barbed wire fence had been erected around the entire perimeter of the field, leaving only one entrance for Shuya to traverse. Directly through this opening was a narrow corridor, approximately 100m in length, of smoldering hot coals which were lined on both sides by more razor-sharp fencing. At the end of this corridor stood a tall hurdle which was followed in succession by many additional hurdles of varying height down a grassy avenue of 500m. At the conclusion of the hurdles towered a fake mountain wall of colossal height, which must be overcome to reach the next destination. There was no rope or safety provisions of any kind, but numerous rocks jutted out from the slope which could be climbed with hands and feet. When one descended from this stone wall, the floor consisted of nothing but rubber tires for a long stretch of distance which made walking arduous. The tire path eventually led into a pit where two hungry dogs were running in circles and barking ferociously, but if one conquered all of the obstacles along the way and reached the rope latter on the opposite side of the pit, they could climb upwards and arrive at a halcyon stretch of grass which was occupied only by a desk and chair. Satoshi calmly strolled over to the desk and placed upon it a plain sheet of paper inscribed with a single question – “what does 3 + 4 * 5 equal?” Satisfied with his work, the Chuunin laid a pencil atop the paper and returned to stand patiently in the corner.

Post for training (946 words) --> here
Satoshi straightened his tie and sat down idly at the small wooden desk in eager anticipation of his pupil’s arrival. One might naively expect an Olympian degree of stamina from a Chuunin of Cloud Village, but working industriously under the sweltering sunlight left Satoshi exhausted and he lamented his lack of forethought not to even bring an iced beverage for the occasion. He had devoted several hours that morning to constructing his little playground, and spent an innumerable measure of time in devising its layout, and he gazed upon his handiwork with an expression of pride. The procurement and transport of rabid dogs was no small feat, but there wasn’t a hardship Satoshi wouldn’t endure to educate the future generation of Cloud Village shinobi.

Twirling the pencil in one hand and wiping sweat from his brow with the other, Satoshi examined the sheet of paper before him. “Treading over hot coals and climbing rock walls is one thing, but have today’s youth even heard of PEMDAS?” mused Satoshi to himself, still relaxing in the plastic chair ensconced behind several layers of barbed wire fencing. “I shouldn’t ask too much from them. If I’m unreasonably demanding of my students they’ll quit the Academy and become accountants or something.” Satoshi scribbled down an answer and folded up the paper to place in his pocket, and he peered up in time to observe the arrival of a youth with vibrant red hair.

The student did not appear to notice Satoshi, who sat well concealed in the epicenter of the obstacle course, and he wasted no time in immediately tackling the challenges Satoshi laid before him. Satoshi possessed no encyclopedic knowledge of bloodlines, and pondered whether the student’s conspicuous hair color indicated some unique racial trait that imparted immunity to fire. A piercing sensation of anxiety briefly overcame Satoshi that perhaps he had labored indefatigably for hours to construct an obstacle course which was much too easy, but his fears were quickly alleviated. The young boy bravely tackled the first leg of Satoshi’s gauntlet, traversing across a narrow corridor of steaming hot coals with a dauntless visage. However, where his spirit blazed imperturbably, his own body forsook him, for the student looked visibly fatigued before even reaching the stretch of hurdles.

Satoshi stood up from the desk and was prepared to swoop in and introduce himself, but to his great stupefaction another boy arrived from out of the blue which left Satoshi flummoxed as to which one was really his pupil. He had to get to the bottom of this conundrum. The mysterious newcomer traipsed across the sizzling avenue with admirable stoicism, clearly suppressing an intense feeling of pain, and soon arrived right where the original student rested. Satoshi recognized this as his opportunity to introduce himself, and expeditiously raced between the two frenzied hounds, surmounted the rock wall, sprinted over the hurdle course and skid haphazardly in an effort to decelerate until at last he stood before the two students with a warm smile.

“My name is Enomoto Satoshi and I am a Chuunin of Cloud Village. It is an esteemed privilege to serve as your instructor today, though I must humbly request that you simply call me ‘Satoshi’ for I fear that I should consider retirement by the time people start addressing me by my surname.” Satoshi orated audibly to the two students in audience, though his eyes moved back and forth in uncertainty as to whom he should actually be speaking to. “Before we dive into the exciting aspects of today’s lesson, however, I suppose we ought to attend to the business end first. It was my understanding that I would oversee the instruction of a certain ‘Takagi Shuya’ yet two ambitious youths have decided to challenge this treacherous and unforgiving labyrinth. Could one of you perhaps be ‘Takagi’ and the other ‘Shuya’, or are there are two students with identical names who erroneously received the same invitation? Maybe the Academy of Cloud Village has been graced with a rare Rikkudo Sennin prodigy? I care naught, for pedagogy is a high honor and if I can impart some modest skill or wisdom to two promising students then I would have served my village far better than simply teaching one.”

Satoshi feared his introduction had digressed into palaverous rambling, and straightening his glasses to signal a segue in his speech, quickly moved to conclude the address. “I have gifted you a monumental favor; abrogating the most formidable task in this entire obstacle course. The only impediments remaining are the series of hurdles, the rock wall, the tire path, and my two puppies. I have an exciting and enlightening lesson planned for you today but we cannot begin until you get there first. I will eagerly await you at the end of these trials, but first I shall confer these two implements for you to use at your discretion. I would feel awfully guilty if my students died or something in the midst of all this fun, so please refrain from doing anything silly that might give me a scare.”

Satoshi handed both students two squeaky dog toys, and with a polite bow, hastened briskly through the obstacle course and sat once more at the wooden desk. His journey this time was somewhat clumsier than before and he stumbled while scaling the rock wall, though he soon arrived back at the finish line proving that conquering these obstacles was indeed achievable by man or child alike. Before climbing the rope latter at the end, he tossed a chew toy which pacified the two dogs momentarily but after a minute or so they returned to running in circles and barking.

Satoshi’s smiled brightly in greeting as his two students finally conquered the obstacle course and arrived at the cozy pocket of grass, circumscribed by several layers of razor-sharp fencing. Both youngsters had appeared exhausted mere moments ago when they successfully traversed the long avenue of blazing hot coals. Nonetheless, an auspicious vigor seemed to uplift them and galvanize their spirits, and through backbreaking effort and exertion, they soon maneuvered past not only a lengthy stretch of hurdles, towering rock wall, slippery tract of rubber tires but also two ferocious canines which were cleverly assuaged by the chew toys that Satoshi had bestowed upon them. Satoshi rose up from the plastic chair, and gazing fixedly from behind his spectacles, finally addressed the two once they had caught their breath.

“I must applaud your indefatigable efforts and unswerving perseverance in overcoming the many trials and tribulations which I laid before you. Nobody ever challenged me in such a daunting manner when I was a student, but had I disclosed the sheer magnitude of the difficulty and danger present in this obstacle course, I feared that I might intimidate you into giving up. Congratulations on a safe and successful passage.”

Satoshi paused briefly seemed suddenly lost in thought as his expression contorted into a frown. Glumly, he continued speaking.

“Unfortunately, I fear that my competence as an instructor has already expired. I spoke previously of an exciting lesson plan that I devised which would surely impart invaluable experience in the ways of the shinobi. As I sat here contemplating matters while you completed the remainder of the obstacle course, however, the horrifying realization struck me that I was so busy constructing this elaborate playground all morning that I never got around to finishing that lesson plan! Alas, my oversight has placed us in quite the quandary…but there still remains a flicker of hope, for the obstacles that you vanquished just now were merely a warm-up lap, so to speak, for the labyrinth which I have been engaged in building.”

Satoshi gave a swift kick with his foot and knocked over the wooden desk and chair, revealing a very narrow passageway leading deep underground. The top rung of a rickety, rope ladder peaked from the top of the hole, and the width was so tight that anyone climbing down would be uncomfortably squeezed by the encircling walls of dirt. Beckoning the students to follow, Satoshi led the way as the three shinobi descended single-file into the great depths below; climbing several minutes through pitch black darkness before finally arriving at an illuminated expanse.

Satoshi, Shuya and Mitsuga stood dwarfed within a massive cavern which was dead silent save the smoldering drone of torches burning on every wall. A dozen tunnels burrowed haphazardly in every conceivable direction. These paths were also lined with flaming torches, however, they shifted direction so erratically that one could not anticipate where they led simply from peeking through the entrance.

“I think you can sympathize with my fatigue when you look upon my handiwork. I had been digging for countless hours this morning before I struck this curious little cave here, but those long, winding tunnels are the result of my own excavation. You see, an Aburame friend of mind was expanding his entomology collection and kindly asked me if I could help him with this endeavor. I’ve been searching everywhere and at long last discovered what I was looking for!”

Satoshi pulled a cryptic object from out of his pocket which suddenly glistened in the torchlight. In the palm of his hand lay a glass bottle containing a sparkling gold spider scurrying about. “I have no clue what this creature is called, but it’s precisely what my friend requested. I found this one in one of my tunnels, but he requested three in total. Unfortunately, those passageways are infested with snakes, giant rats and a hodgepodge of fearsome critters which persuaded me to take a break until I could find assistance. Your arrival was a propitious turn of events.”

Satoshi paced towards the two students, though his presence seemed to phase in and out of existence as he moved across areas beyond the illumination of the torches. He handed both students a transparent glass bottle much like that one which he returned to his pocket.

“Take any path that you fancy, and obviously remember that your safety and well-being comes foremost so avoid engaging in danger that you cannot handle. I’ve already found my bug so I’ll sit on this rock over here while you scour the inscrutable depths of this subterranean maze. I bid you two the best of luck, and remember if your tunnel fails to yield a spider, you can always retrace your steps and try another route.”

Post for training (400 words) --> here
Satoshi sat placidly upon a protruding rock as his two pupils darted about the cavernous abyss. They quickly disappeared behind impenetrable sheets of darkness which obfuscated all attempts to peer down the dozen or so tunnels from his vantage point in the center of the cave. With both students out of sight, Satoshi yawned loudly and took a small moment to embrace the serene silence emanating throughout the chasm. He had wanted to present himself as professionally as possible to earn their respect as an instructor, but behind this lively facade Satoshi was utterly enervated from his tireless work all morning.

“I’m lucky to have such industrious and sharp-witted students. I don’t think most youngsters are half this competent,” Satoshi mused to himself, as an echoing *drip, drip* sounded from somewhere beyond the opaque murkiness and contributed a new timbre to the droning blaze of torch light. “Back in my student days I would have been furious if my teacher assigned me some menial task tantamount to running errands as part of my lesson. That’s exactly what I’ve done for them, but they embraced the challenge without even a grumble and clearly see it as an opportunity to improve their skills.”

All of a sudden, a thundering hiss roared throughout the cavern and Satoshi stood at attention, vividly recognizing that sound. When he was sedulously engaged in burrowing throughout the cave, Satoshi had encountered innumerable creepy and crawly pests but most of them posed little threat. With one exception. A ferocious hydra had attacked him when he found his golden spider, and after wrestling savagely with the beast, a well-timed Rasengan had annihilated the serpent’s body and sent all nine heads flying. Satoshi optimistically hoped that this decisive strike would prove successful at slaying the monster, but it appeared that the Hydra heads were still scurrying about using their necks as tails, and were surely looking for trouble.

Briefly overcome with alarm, Satoshi considered dashing off in some haphazard direction and intervening on his students’ behalf. A Hydra possessed killing potential far beyond the capabilities of a typical student. However, Satoshi’s students had proved exceptional thus far and conquered every obstacle he could conceive to throw at them. He sat back down, somewhat persuaded by his own fatigue as well, and resolved to see how Shuya and Mitsugi would fare searching for their spiders with a newfound monster prowling about.

Satoshi stood anxiously in the nexus of the cavern as loud crashes and menacing hisses echoed throughout the subterranean cave. No matter how hard Satoshi strained his eyes to discern the source of the uproar, his efforts proved futile for a shroud of darkness concealed his students’ whereabouts and rendered their fates a portentous mystery.

After what felt like hours, though in reality only minutes elapsed, Shuya emerged from the tenebrous void appearing as if he had not only seen a ghost but wrestled with one. Tachycardic and Tachypneic, his conspicuous fatigue and bruised body still emanated a triumphant air whether he realized it or not. Utilizing his last ounce of energy, he handed Satoshi the prized golden spider and collapsed supine as an exhausted but victorious shinobi.
Satoshi hardly had the time to examine the elusive insect in its bottle when Mitsugi appeared sprinting with expeditious haste. He delivered his bounty to Satoshi with remarkable stamina; for he was clearly tired and breathing rapidly, but hardly more so than anyone who had just sprinted several meters. Before Mitsugi had the opportunity to alert Satoshi as to his injury, however, the Chuunin noticed the blood dripping from his left arm. Satoshi was astounded with Mitsugi and his seeming Olympian pain tolerance. He never would have guessed that the kid had been wounded for he had ran with an unmitigated stride. Nonetheless, though the laceration looked painful, it did not appear grievous, and Satoshi felt confident that it could easily be handled at the Aesculapium with no lasting effects.

“Shuya. Mitsugi. I have never had the privilege to meet students with such precocious athleticism, creative afflatus, and perhaps most importantly, a tenacious dedication to completing a task no matter how superficially menial it might sound. I’m ashamed to admit it, though I’ll humble my ego since there’s nobody else around in this desolate chasm – you are lightyears ahead of my abilities at your age, and with your astronomical potential, I don’t think there’s an ambition you cannot achieve if you’re willing to devote the same effort that you showed to me today. Congratulations. The sky is the limit for both of you."

Satoshi flashed a warm smile, and directed both students back up the rope ladder to the sunshine above. Having survived a treacherous obstacle course, a labyrinthine cavern, and bloodthirsty snake monsters, Shuya and Mitsugi were exceptionally accomplished for their ages and would no longer required his teaching.

Satoshi sat upon a tall, wooden-legged stool and leisurely enjoyed his bowl of warm soup. He was seated in front of the bar of a rickety open-air restaurant assembled out of an eclectic combination of bamboo and wood. A small thatched roof furnished customers with a refreshing shade, and on this bright mid-morning day Satoshi looked in both directions around the cramped, narrow corridor nestled deep within the Susukino District. He was expecting someone.

“The last time I worked with Omoi back in the Ancient Forest, he was just a humble, inexperienced academy student. And I was a novice instructor. It was reckless of me to pit him against those ferocious beasts, and in that miserable rain no less!” Satoshi’s thoughts drifted away to his heavy gray raincoat, which ultimately he was forced to dispense with for the dampness would never abate. Fortunately, raincoats were an unnecessary burden on sunny days like this one, and he was dressed business casually in unremarkable slacks, button-down shirt, floppy tie and of course a sleek pair of glasses.

“Despite my hazardous lesson plan, Omoi conquered every single obstacle that I could throw at him. It hasn’t been too long since we last trained, but he possessed worlds of potential and I’m eager to see how far he’s grown since then.”

Satoshi finished his bowl and handed it to the elderly woman serving customers from behind the bar. He had instructed a number of pupils since working with Omoi, but Omoi Chichioya’s precocious talent left a lasting impression on him. Satoshi listlessly sipped his ice-cold glass of water and contemplated what sort of lesson plan he should challenge Omoi with today.
