Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

It was a strange feeling that he would be at this point in his life. One would think that he has already reached a certain part of his life of introspection of the past, but really, it was more trivial than that. Kiri took in a deep breath before sighing heavily. Then he would flex his limbs, stretch from left to right and then look on with dead determination at the target before him. Standing in full 12-feet high, 20 feet in length, and sturdy as reinforced steel, was the bookcase full of medical journals. Next to it were three more shelves at both sides. A daunting presence to uninitiated, but he had long been acquainted in their old, sometimes dusty, sometimes almost irreparable, and note-filled occupants.

He then looks down as he pulls out a silver pocket watch from his pant-pocket and looks at the time. The trainee was late. He had hoped that they would get an early start as he had been quite excited in formulating today’s studies. In fact, the night before, he spent a good amount of time trying to recall his earlier days as a mednin-in-training under Osu and of the different challenges he had to undertake. Of course, it was best to meet at the hospital and get acquainted. But what happened after that was something he’d rather not remember, even if it was interesting, to say the least. In any case, he was here to gauge the potential next generation of mednins, and to do so, he would have to carefully assess their capabilities in every aspect.

He moved towards the center of this isolated study room in the public library where a large wooden desk await in silence. On the surface were drafts, images, skeletal figures, and organs. They belonged, not only to humans, but also to different animals, and while they were not assembled to create the correct shape or figure of which they were part of, he knew how each of them differed or how each of them were similar. Thus, for this day’s first assessment, he was looking forward if the potential mednin had the basics of anatomy remembered well.

Now, all he needed was a knock on the door from the librarian to alert him of the prospect’s arrival. After all, it was clear in the instruction he left for the boy, that he should first check-in with the front desk of the library to get a clearance card to enter the isolated study room. With all the special medical journals abound, access should be limited to the proper authority.

A week had passed since my last excursion with the man known at Kiri. That had been a fun little trip, but it seemed that one of my offhanded comments about becoming a med-nin were taken quite seriously.

Well, why the hell not? Was all I could muster at the time I got the summon. I didn’t much care to argue it anyway. I had been telling a few people my plans into getting into the medical field as a surgeon with my affinity for fine metal objects like scalpels and needle points. I already knew my own value and if I could hone those specific skills for stitching and other emergency uses with incredibly deft ‘hands’, there was probably possibilities I hadn’t even considered.

When I was at the entrance to the library where my summons was taking place, I was in the process of cursing myself a bit for being late. I had trouble finding this place as I got the run around from a receptionist for a minute as she likely thought a scabby kid like me wasn’t in the right place or something. Old bitch I could only sigh to myself as I made my way through the library looking for the right room.

I was told this was going to be my introduction into the field. The start of a month long crash course on the human anatomy, I hadn’t been told the exact dates, but it was likely I’d be here studying often... I had finally stabilized my life after these constant bouts of training only to be thrust back into coursework on medical study. I couldn’t bring myself to complain down to my heart though. This was after all beneficial to me and wasn’t costing me a dime to learn. That knowledge in itself got me a bit more motivated. This education would cost me an arm and a leg usually I hummed to myself, my mood markedly improved.

As I entered the rented room that held the one nicknamed ‘demon’ Kiri. I was greeted with a table full of paperwork and miscellaneous objects of medical use. I could already tell this was going to be an interesting day. I greeted Kiri with a nod and a slight bow waiting on him to give further instruction as I was lost on what was shown and where he was going to take this.

It wasn't long after his anticipation reached an all time high that he heard a knock. Kiri almost jumped. Perhaps he was far too excited at his new duty that he was over-thinking through things. It wouldn't do, especially if he'll have to deal with a prospect student. So he cleared his mind and then went to open the door.

"I'll take over from here, miss," he said to the librarian before glancing at Eishi and ushering him inside. It wasn't that long since they first met and he could still remember the faint details he knew of the lad. Unlike the normal prospects who often come to the hospital themselves, Eishi was someone Kiri was more eager to get to know. Perhaps it was because of the lad's rather eccentric ways bordering slightly antagonistic (if he relied on reports from the academy) but also it was probably because he knew of the boy's background from the documents. Aside from being a mednin, Kiri was contented to the Sentou and such, he has access to more files and screening of Kumogakure's students.

In any case, he would stop short of the table and allowed Eishi to have a quick glance of what were there. Perhaps in his mind, Eishi was dreading more paperwork. Well, Kiri could just outright tell him that the medical branch was about more paperwork than the other branches, equally when there was a need for constant updating of medical journals, reports and whatnot.

Patting the lad at the back, Kiri beckoned him to move forward. "On the table are different sketches of anatomical figures. Skeletal formations that aren't exactly complete, and organs of different sizes, not limited to humans. First up, and sorry for not being too thorough with the introductions, I'm Kiri by the way, as you may have remembered..." He paused as he realised he messed up the order of his opening speech before resuming his composure and continued, "Right, so first order of business... Please identify each skeletal formation. There are three: a hint would be one's a child. And if there's anything missing, please try your best to look at reference materials about the proper formations and organs that need to be added. You have an hour."

What he may not have spoken was that most of the skeletal formation sketches were at most, 40% complete. And even then, one was an animal. "Oh and don't worry about the quality of your art. Just focus on the main skeletal frameworks and important organs. Wouldn't want a mednin to confuse the stomach with the liver."

I blinked twice at the rapid amount of information coming my way as I just stood there digesting it all. I internally complained to myself reminding myself that this wasn’t called a month-long crash course for nothing. It was going to be painful and dull, and I was going to have to do it or lose the opportunity. Despite telling myself this, I was still dreading it. I was already scared of what Kiri was going to assign to me as self-study. If this was any indication, it was going to be something silly like a book or two a night. I’m going to want to kill myself by the end of this aren’t I? I contemplated the actual likelihood of that happening before snapping myself out of it. I was already wasting time just standing around and I needed to get back to the task assigned to me.

“Okay. Sink or swim. Starting off with the impossible challenge, it is”, I chortled to myself in a mock complaint as I went to work. Quickly and quietly, I looked over the rows and rows of books. I was trying to get a sense of what I would I would be needing, glancing at the sketches available to me, getting a good idea of what I was looking for. I spent the first half an hour going between finding books in the library and going over the sketches again and again. That only started to slow down after the first twenty-five of hectic shuffling. After a few trips back and forth, it became increasingly clear that it was a mix between a child, adult, and an unknown animal.

I was already forty minutes in when I was happy with my many different piles of organs, bones and other small bits I was still identifying. After another five minutes of careful sorting, it became incredibly obvious that all I had going for me was less than half of any one of the three systems.

I scratched my head in puzzlement and then resignation as I summoned two [Steel Clones] of myself. The two of them went to work on the two different humans while I was still stuck on the animal. The knowledge wasn’t an issue. At this point, I had already caused myself an aneurysm or two by using the last hour of my life on this sole insanity.

When the hour had finally past, I was ready to present what I was able to accomplish and take a much-needed break. Two of the system were as complete and close to perfect as I could manage. It was a mix between what was given to me and my own sketches. My drawings weren't anything you'd find in the field of medicine digest, but it was detailed enough to be clear on whatever each sketch represented.

“I don’t think I missed anything on those two, but...” I pointed to the animal, “I couldn’t identify the animal. Give me another hour. Probably could figure it out then. I’d give myself a C+” .

I looked over my work on the table before shrugging silently. I thought my own judgment was fair, though I questioned what Kiri had actually expected of me to get done. The animal was the only blemish on my efforts, but honestly, that was a pretty damn hard problem as it was.

He watched over the young shinobi as the latter would quickly get to the task. All the while, Kiri made mental notes of Rishi’s every move, every decision, and every time he seemed annoyed. It was clear that getting tossed right into something that commanded keen observation and critical thinking wasn’t exactly what a “first day” should be, but, Kiri didn’t want the lad to feel complacent.

In fact, what he wanted Eishi to feel is the sense of urgency. And he couldn’t help but smile as he watched over the lad diligently flip between pages, sorting, reading and using useful critical thinking and decision making skills. Kiri made a silent “Ho, ho” when the lad decided to use his clones to help finish up the other two skeletal formations while he focused on what appeared to be his weakness, thus requiring more of his time. Kiri merely nodded as he paced around the room. He went over the shelves, himself, looking at the spines and reading the titles. He must have disappeared from view by then as he delved into other racks before finally appearing just on time. And at that, he was already holding a couple of journals.

”OhOh, are you done, already? Didn’t think that time would fly that fast,” said Kiri as he approached the table from the opposite end and examined the sketches. He nodded as Eishi would give a brief explanation. “Quite the diligent student, you are.” It wasn’t in his intention to demean the other, but merely to give an atmosphere that this session was in fact meant to teach the latter. Whatever it was, Kiri was determined to make sure that Eishi left this room with improved knowledge. “Don’t worry. It’s not necessary to complete that. I was merely trying to gauge your working ethics.”

With that, he placed the journals on the table, their titled facing Eishi so that the lad could read them. [The Complete Bestiary Compendium] and [Incident Reports at the Ancient Forest for year XXX]

”First of all, I’m glad you know the basics of the human body,” Kiri nodded towards the two completed ones, “Though you missed out the scale of the lungs of the child in comparison to her ribcage. It’s important to be precise considering situations in the battlefield may not allow you use of medical equipment for internal observations, especially during field surgeries. You’re interested in that, right? So says in your documents. Furthermore, that lapse of judgment on the scaling could be a result of giving the task to your clone? Not that it’s bad, for having a medical assistant will always useful. However, if you had, instead focused on what you know best, and allowed your clones to do further research on the animal skeletal framework, of which you seem less knowledgeable, it would haven’t cost you a child’s life. So, rule number one-time know your strengths in order to determine priorities.”

Kiri move around the table and examined the sketches further. “As for the animal skeleton, by considering some of the bone length, you can find clues as to exactly what it is. This, in particular, only having a ribcage and extended lower limbs, actually belongs to the ungulate species, if you look closer to one of the limbs that has the design for a hoove. To what exact animal it could be may need further clues and research but by learning certain distinct parts, you can narrow possibilities and potentially figure out a creature’s strength and weakness. Human anatomy is for physicians alone. To be more useful in the field as a Mednin, you need to be more knowledgeable about other species as well.”

He patted the lad on the shoulder as he walked passed him. “Which leads to the next activity. Hope you’re not gonna collapse on me. I don’t intend for you to leave this room until we’re done with the three activities I’ve planned. Now, for the next 4 hours, read through the incident report from a few years back. Pick out at least three cases of animal attacks or hunts gone wrong. Preferably one that involved a class fieldwork where that student got impaled. Anyway, as this is merely an incident report journal, it doesn’t have the final observation notes from forensics and the hospital. Kind of a simple police blotter, if you will. The 5W’s and H though even then they are very much vague. And you can’t really be certain that it was the correct animal they cited. So, you can analyse scenarios through the photos of the victims there, hope you’re not allergic to a bloody mess. You can compare initial investigation notes with the bestiary analysis and make sure to be thorough with your reasoning as to why you believe it was this or that. Also, please note of the relation of time and location of attacks.”

At that he would go over the nearest shelf and pick out another book before finding a seat at the opposite side of the long table and sat down, opened his book, and began to read. Then he added, “Oh and one more thing. You could have asked for help in the first activity. I was left bored watching and found these books. After all, even if you’re the Mednin in the field, you shouldn’t feel too burdened by everything on your own. Knowing how to maximize available manpower is key to any successful emergency, especially when it’s not your specialisation.” And with that, Kiri got back to reading on newly published journal of applied chakra therapy.

I listened intently to what he had to say. For the most part, I agreed with his assessment. I took it seriously enough as It was an honest take on my problem-solving skills and work ethics. He used that to lead to some advice on finding the source of the animal to which I concluded would've been helpful knowledge about ten minutes ago.

When he began discussing what was expected of me for the new activity, I was slightly worried as I didn't really know how long this would usually take someone. I suspected four hours was an incredibly short period of time to do an analyst from known information, so I decided now was not the time to pussyfoot around. I needed to know exactly how I wanted to approach this problem. Kir was able, for the first time in I don't know how many years, to make me pull out pen and paper and begin taking notes, bending over the table as I scribbled down a plan for how I was going to organize this mess. They say doctors have bad handwriting, I'm keeping the joke alive as mine is downright shit. My notes wouldn't do Kiri any good if he tried to read them, short of being a god. I could read it, sure, but I knew why no one else could. I simply sighed to myself in frustration. I miss being right-handed...

When Kiri added the final comment about asking for help, I swear, I couldn't help it. I flinched in response,

"Trick answers aren't fun unless the student does it. If you try to teach that way, you'll always get the standard answer". I followed that statement with a slight grimace but decided to power on through and return to my casual expression. Seeing as my default facial expression suffered from RBF, I was slightly worried that he would take that as a personal attack. I sighed, understanding the point he was making and asked in a respectful tone,

"Would you be willing to help me with this? I assume you are looking for me to lead this as a doctor would towards an assistant?".

Kiri felt a grin grow on his face. The lad was rather cute, he’d give him that. And though Kiri may swing that way for a certain redhead in the past, when he meant that he found Eishi cute, it meant along the lines of “he’s a funny little twerp that I just can’t help but want to see succeed”. Perhaps that could be seen as a far off tangent but that was how he felt at that moment when the other retorted after he had gone and lectured him for a bit. So he reached out a hand and ruffle the lad’s hair before he had gone to take a seat. And just as he was about to start reading on his own, Eishi would come to ask for assistance.

“Hmm? Okay,” said Kiri putting the journal aside as he sat down eagerly. He remained silent as he looked back at Eishi, a weird stillness taking over in this isolated room they were in. He blinked once, then twice, then a third time before he reached to scratch the back of his head. “What’s your plan, Eishi? I’m all ears.” That’s right. Even if he was willing to help, he would not be the one to initiate. The lad needed to know how to work things through.

I flinched slightly at the casual touching, definitely wasn't expecting that from him, but whatever. Kiri didn't seem the type to fiddle kids, so I didn't put much stock in it as anything other than that condescension that adults get over children. I normally would embarrass the hell out of an adult who did something like that, but I decided it was probably best not to say anything about it and move on. He was teaching me some high-level stuff for basically free and I was still wanting to appear grateful. I began writing down my plan on a notepad as I read the file doing an initial once-over of what was known about the cases. One barely had information outside of a couple prints and a few bloodstains and gnawed on bones. I swore internally, hoping the others were better than this. That hope was quickly dashed away as I looked through the stack of case files, finding that most of the ones he picked were incredibly vague on the details.

I noticed by that time that he was getting antsy. It seemed he had a shorter patience then I was expecting, but maybe he was just a victim of knowing the value of his own time. I shrugged internally, deciding to give him something to do while I began jotting down the first case file I chose to take as one of my choices.

"Could you get me whatever book this library has on local predators in the country? More specifically for the large feline category. This one already looks like a big cat attack", I pointed towards the current file I was looking at, moving on to another case adding to my last statement only a moment later,

"And whatever this place has on large birds, this one looks like it was done by a hawk or something. Do hawks even get that big?" I asked myself and Kiri if he felt like answering.

I scribbled down the notes in a systematic manner, soon the basis for the three cases I wanted to take were in front of me. I needed the books I asked for if Kiri was willing to do so. Assuming he did, I needed to search for books on wolves and dire wolves for the last case file. I would go from inward-out. trying to find a matching animal from local breeds before looking towards the surrounding countries local species lists.

Kiri grinned as the lad got to thinking. He could see with his golden eyes how Eishi was working hard as to please the current the condition of his activity. He knew that deep down inside, the boy must be frustrated for some time now, especially with how things have turned out to be. He wouldn’t blame the him as Kiri would probably have felt the same thing himself if it was him in this scenario. However, he was keenly aware of how things were to turn out and it was best to proceed that way. “I’ll be back with the books,” he finally said with an even more mischievous grin. There was no meaning to it. It was simply his way of expressing a different kind of intrigue towards this student of his.

Going towards the shelves, Kiri would walk along the aisle until he would finally find the right location. He didn’t need to read the markings per shelf as he had been there for far too long to almost memorize the locations. After all, for someone who endeavored to hunt, not just for sport but for his everyday training as he grew up, these books were part of his research catalogue. Taking out two books– The Large Feline Predatory Dictionary, and the Aviary Compendium– he return to the desks to find boy hard at work. He acknowledged Eishi’s working ethics. He’ll have to give the boy some brownie points for that, at least. Still, he needed to learn how to make tasks more efficient. But perhaps it was for a future lesson, not now.

“Here you go. You have three and a half hours more to go. You don’t have to be perfect in this, but try your best,” said Kiri as he set the books down next to Eishi. Then, Kiri would return to his chair and pick up the journal he was reading earlier.

For the next three and a half hours, the two of us would go over the details as I drew them up. It didn't take as long as I thought it would with the help of Kiri. He knew this library better than most while I was completely new to the scene. I decided to tackle all them at once. Once again making two more [Steel Clones] as they went about browsing through the books. The triple vision messing with me big time, but the magic fuckery that was clone jutsus was allowing me to keep it all sane and orderly.

I had been wondering if every day was going to be like this for the next month. I had been told after my month was up I'd still be sent tests on a weekly basis by Kiri and I was expected to stay above ninety percent. I cried internally thinking about it. That was going to be free nights of video games, reading, and eating replaced with boring study and cramming. That was at the same time I was also still expected to train diligently and be on call 24/7. At least I wasn't expected for a mission while doing this training, though that just means not getting paid anything besides salary. I focused back in on my work and got cracking.

I found conclusive evidence on the first attacking fairly quickly. It was a large grizzly, nothing out of the ordinary beyond the fact that the hiker had an open food container that was found at the crime scene and the bear simply wanted both his flesh and his sandwich. I guessed that they simply didn't have enough evidence as the bear had mauled him so completely that they couldn't ID the animal in question.

The second was a bit harder as I had to really guess at the bird. I ended up choosing a local species of eagles to the area who were known to generally not share hunting zones. I noted later when I went over the sighting of the species of eagle, that in another report a couple months later there was a nest that had been found with a couple article of clothing and other personal belongings that matched up with the victim. It had been a watch and a couple of shiny earing that had been taken after the female victim had been picked up and dropped from an incredible height. I was feeling pretty vindicated at my choice then along with no small degree of pride at figuring this one out as it took the majority of my time.

When it came to the third report, I found that it ended up being pretty unnoteworthy. Much like the first crime report, it was just a cougar who stumbled upon a campground and attacked and killed the two victims, male and female as they were in coitus. I snickered at the medical term for missionary sex but calmed myself and remembered to not act my actual age. I guessed it was again, so bloody that they had trouble IDing the actual animal.

"Donezo," I lifted my arm as if presenting my findings on a game show to Kiri. I waited for whatever he had to say about my work and give me the rundown for what he had planned for the next month on this crash course. I hoped I was done for today at least.

I would leave after he told me what he wanted. If he wanted me to stay for something more I also would.

Kiri was quite surprised that Eishi had managed to find the answers to his activity. He couldn’t help but grin. The boy had guts and mental fortitude, that was for sure. Especially when he didn’t have the proper introduction and was made to suddenly jump into this excruciatingly boring and mindboggling work one day one.

He stood up and examined each of the reports one by one, nodding and approving. Patting on Eishi’s head after his work, he would say, “That’s very good work you got here. You might want to think about forensics in the future. You could help cases that have been buried for years. And it would especially help a great deal in the battlefield. After all, when Mednins are at a loss after failing one too many souls, it was best to prepare those who remain alive. Some don’t get to return home to their loved ones but a clear explanation to the family would help end their grieving and pained wonderings of how it could have happened. Then again, when you get to learn how to clearly solve answers pertaining to the mystery of death, it may end up desensitizing you and you lose all sympathy for patients, both alive and dead.”

He would keep Eishi’s report and carefully bind them in a folder before wrapping the straps of the leather journal. “This will be your accomplishments. I look forward to seeing more success documented in the future. With that, today is done. Give yourself a break. Don’t use too much chakra, now. Oh and meet me tomorrow at the gates. We’ll be going to a town clinic just outside. Don’t be late.”

As such, Kiri would guide Eishi outside the study room before he would return the access card to the librarian.
