Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

The slow climb up to Kumogakure was made even harder by the weight of responsibility waiting at the top. Yuii was in mourning. The pyre had been lit on her adventure, the boat was cast, the horns were sounding their final call. Her travels had been so bright, so filled with life and new wonders that it was difficult to fathom that they had come to an abrupt end. They had been too young, too beautiful. The biting wind that whipped and twirled her woollen scarf and stung her face was no match for the angsty storm in her heart. There would be no joy from now on, only the dark looming cloud of familial hatred and responsibility set to rain upon them!

Sniff.

It was hard to be too sad though, what with the sounding board of charming mispronunciations strapped to Yuii's back. Wrapped in layers of cotton and wool, and finally, a rabbit fur lined with fluffy rabbit fur to protect her from the cold, her daughter had spent the last day exclaiming over every feature of the dragon mountains that caught her eye. And for Umeko, only two, every single object her little eyes fell on was a wonder. And of course, each item was an opportunity to flex her developing vocabulary. Every pond, every cloud, every rock.

For what was the hundred and tenth time that day, small mitten covered hands beat on the back of Yuii's grey canvas jacket.

"Mama, ock!" Umeko screeched, pointing towards a pile of stones on the roadside.

Yuii sighed and nodded, mustering her own enthusiasm. Tenderly she parried the kitten-like strikes and gave her tiny had a squeeze. "Rock, 'meko. Rock." she corrected firmly but gently, "And so very pretty. Do you think those rocks are taking a nap or just waiting for us to pass by?" Yuii did not have to look to see the pinched, confused face that her daughter pulled or the way she would follow the rocks with her eyes until the next path bend just to see if the rocks moved. It gave Yuii a moments peace.

Until:

"Mama, Tee!!" this time Umeko hugged her neck and pointed up the slope of the mountain.

"Tree," she replied, tilting her head towards the sad scrub clinging to the rock face of the pass. It had lost half its pine needles and most of its branches to the harsh climate but was surprisingly still alive. It was a strange place for a tree to have ever been planted, "A squirrel must have lost his acorn up there and it became a tree. Do you think it is scared of heights or likes the view, Ume?" Silence again.

Yuii would need to take Umeko to the greenhouses bordering the ancient forest, she decided, and the waterfalls at the hot springs. There would be plenty of water creatures and shiny pebbles to delight her for hours. There would be precious little free time once they stepped into Cloud, especially as Yuii reacquainted herself with the daily grind of her rank and station, but it would be important to give her daughter time. Travelling together had given Yuii the time and space she needed to bond with her daughter. Motherless herself, the Kagetsu raised woman knew very little about expressing maternal love. Before, she had felt like she was floundering, failing, at being the parent she wanted to learn to be. She didn't want to return to those darker days, didn't want her daughter to remember her mother only working.

Changes would need to happen.

"Mama!! Mama!!??" Umeko began again.

"Yes, Umeko?" she sighed good-naturedly, realising she had been lost in thought.

"Ig Hor!" her toddler squealed, pointing down of the bending road to where the cliffs on either side of them ended in a magnificent, familiar sight. The gates loomed over them, gigantic and imposing, reminding all of the might of the people who lived beyond. Warning those who sought to make enemies with Cloud to turn back. Or, as Umeko put it, a big door.

She still felt melancholic to be back, but as they grew closer, the emotion was opposed by a sudden wave of anticipation and excitement for her familiar village. Her pace quickened to "We're almost..." She hesitated to call Kumo home. No place felt complete without her living heart, but there were people here she cared for and a house to call their own, "to a warm meal, clean clothes, and a cosy bed. We'll be able to visit Kogami, Auntie Kiyo and see Kuni and the goats. It's spring, so there will be baby lambs and foals to see. Also..." Breathlessly she continued to ramble on, naming bakeries, friends and fantastic places until at the base of the great edifice, passport in hand and ready.

Ayumu had been at the gates a lot recently and he wondered if the gate guards were starting to notice. There were really only so many excuses one could give for it before it got weird, but, well, here he was again atop the gates filling out some form or another. The call went out over radio, overheard by Ayumu, that someone was approaching the gates. Out of curiosity, Ayumu paused what he was doing and stepped to the railing peering over to see if he knew the traveler. Sure enough, he knew who it was the moment he saw her. He'd recognize that hair of that particular shade of blue anywhere.

"I've got this one," Ayumu announced to the guards. They were pretty much accustomed to Ayumu processing at least one traveler every time he visited so this came as no surprise to them. With a short hop he stood atop the railing and waited as Yuii drew a little closer to the gates. If she noticed him, he'd raise his hand to give a quick wave. Once she was close enough, he took a step forward and plummeted from the top of the gate. Performing a quick one-handed seal he cast a simple gravity jutsu to slow his fall at the last moment and gracefully land a short ways in front of Yuii. He always seemed to be doing these fancy drops when he was at the gates. Then again, to be fair, it wasn't like there was a ladder down the front of the gate he could take instead. Seeing Yuii up close for the first time in a while, he grinned.

"Well, if it isn't my favorite Main Branch Sennin! And little Umeko too," Ayumu greeted them. He raised his hand to give a quick signal to the guards to open the gates enough for the three of them to enter. They would have recognized the Main Branch Sennin by now, of course. "How have your travels been? Find any good sweets shops? I know you've been itching to get out there since you came back the first time," Ayumu asked, turning to walk with them as the gates were opened before them. Whatever paperwork he'd come to sign, he'd completely forgotten about it. That just meant he'd have an excuse to be back soon.

Yuii was down to small ponds and interesting trees by the time they stepped into the shadow of the gates. Umeko had the blank stare of a child caught in the hell created by a parent who thought she was interesting. 'Please,' her doe-like turquoise eyes pleaded to the heavens, 'save me from my mother's rambling.' Though in less refined, toddler speak. And as if the god themselves saw fit to answer, a man dropped from the sky and ended Yuii's verbal diarrhoea.

The man. The myth. The Raikage

A smile stretched from ear to ear on Yuii's face as her friend and leader landed like a hero from those comics her students seemed to obsess over. She ought to have been surprised to see him, but the truth was, arming the gates was just, Ayumu-like. Gate guarding was so below a Kage, but that was what Yuii admired about Ayumu. He was a leader grounded in reality, a man willing to still rub elbows with his fellow shinobi. He did not expect anyone to complete a menial task that he himself would not do. It was also why she hated him, it was hard to stop working for the perfect leader. Hard to whine about work when he pulled as many hours or more.

"Kogami!!" she squealed happily, throwing formality to the wind and going for the full body hug complete with a hearty shoulder slap. Umeko went in for her own 'hello' nose grab too. "Favourite!? Have you hired more!? If so, I so quit!" She laughed the strained laugh a trapped woman, knowing full well that there was no hope he had named a new Sennin. Where was the hope when they'd considered and given Takaki Saeko temporary leadership during the tournament, tinfoil hat and all. "I hope my taking the long route home wasn't too inconvenient for you." At least the whole place hadn't burned down unless it was just ash beyond the walls.

The question of sweets brightened her smile and added a twinkle to her eye like few other things could. "So many!" she exclaimed, bouncing back on her heels with enough momentum she shoulder bag bounced into her hands. "I've experienced mixtures I never knew were possible, fruits I didn't know existed, cakes I could never have imagined! I'm afaid I've made a sizeable dent in my retirement fund to enjoy it all! I'll need that raise." As she spoke, she dug out a large, double paper bag, that shouldn't have fit in her bag as easily as it did, filled nearly to bursting. Proudly she presented it towards Ayumu.

Umeko just looked bored.

"I brought you back some of my favourites! One bag for you, and one bag for-." her spirit died immediately, replaced but a light blush and a hushed, pleading voice, "No word from my husband?" Yuii hoped for a yes, but the sad, sick feeling in her stomach said no.

Her eyes travelled to the gates, open now, then back to Ayumu, "I'd like to catch up, and I have news to share. Also, some strange experiences in the south of our country that I should tell you about. I'd like to settle Umeko first though and have a sleep in my own bed, with your permission?"

Yuii seemed to perk up substantially upon seeing that Ayumu was there to greet her. Understandably, she probably hadn't been expecting to see him so soon. The hug was likewise unexpected by Ayumu, though not unappreciated. Ayumu chuckled and hugged back as Umeko used this prime opportunity to firmly grasp his nose from her position on Yuii's back. Yuii was naturally extatic at the idea that Ayumu might have found a replacement for her. Sadly, that idea was not rooted in reality. "Oh were it so easy to find our replacements," Ayumu replied, "But at the very least we did manage to stay afloat while you took some time. Maybe it's not impossible for leaders to take vacation now and then after all?" Perhaps he too would take a vacation... some day. He looked wistfully beyond Yuii to the road away from the village before continuing to ask about her trip.

At the prospect of sweets, Yuii got predictably excited. Releasing Ayumu, she took her shoulder bag within her hands and began gushing about the sweets she'd had the opportunity to sample. Apparently, she had even brought him some. Ayumu took it as she explained, but watched as her excitement faded a bit as she recalled that her husband was not waiting for her within the gates. Ayumu wished that he had good news to tell her, but Kaji was not back and Ayumu hadn't heard if he was on his way back yet or not.

"Sorry Yuii," Ayumu said simply, confirming her fears. Understandably ready to go home and rest, she asked permission to save further conversation for later and head inside. Ayumu nodded. "Of course. I've got to finish up here, so I'll let you go on ahead," he answered, stepping aside and gesturing to the open gates. "Rest up. It's good to have you back," Ayumu said with a smile. "And Yuii? Don't worry, I'm sure Kaji will be back soon," Ayumu added, trying to reassure her. Hopefully it wouldn't be long before Kaji returned. It was plain to see that Yuii was missing him greatly. For the time being, Ayumu would pass through the gates and head back up to the top to conclude his business.

Lip pressed tightly, fists clenched, Yuii squared her shoulders and gave one curt nod. Her head swivelled towards the pass and craned up towards the impossibly high cliff edges and mountain peaks as she searched their horizons for what was hers. It had been improbable that Kaji would make be at Kumogakure waiting for her, she'd known this. It was unimaginable that he would be there, strolling into view or perched atop Kooki with a heart-melting smile, she had known this. If only her mind had told her heart who ignored all but irrational hope. Her stomach was rarely wrong.

"Thank-you, Kogami," she replied once she was certain she could keep her tone even. If felt as if a bird had laid its eggs in her throat and a windstorm had blasted her eyes. With a wistful sigh, she turned back to her Kage and followed his gesture towards the gates.

"It's good to be home," she lied, taking her first steps into the village, "we will speak soon."
