“The person you will be assisting and all related details are located within the mission scroll. Based upon your enthusiasm with E-rank missions and the few D-ranks you have done we are trying your hand at a C-rank mission. Please complete it to the best of your abilities”
Airi had taken the scroll like it was a lifeline. Usually she worked in groups with other Genin and a Chunnin but this time it appeared she would be going alone. Ever since graduating she had been nervous about a lot of things but Solo missions sort of caused her to relax, as weird as that sounded. When she was in a group she was always fearful that she would be letting down her teammates. He review so far had actually been very positive. She had risen to Genin status about a month ago which meant she had plenty of E-rank missions though those were more test based than anything else. For D-rank missions she had completed twelve so far with no failures. She listened to whomever was running the mission and managed so far to not cause any problems. All the training and people she met had made her into a wonderful low level shinobi according to those so far.

Airi woke up early the following morning. She would be taking a train out towards Raiden’s eye to meet with the mission holder, a man by than weird name of Akane Shin. He seemed to live just on the outskirts of the city which would take a day or two of train travel to get to the city. As she finished her morning training Airi thought about what she needed to do. This mission was specifically selected for her and her ability to use Wood style jutsu. Certainly there were better more equipped shinobi but this mission was rated as a no combat low C-rank mission. She guessed there might be more reasons than she could think of that she was being sent for.
Airi made her way back to her home, got changed and showered, and then packed a small bag for her week long mission trip.
The ride over to Raiden’s eye was really interesting, Firstly Airi had never been on a train before. She ended up meeting with an old retired shinobi by the name of Doborimaru. Her day and half trip went by really quickly considering she got to learn how to play shogi from a man who played often, she got to hear old stories and his exploits. Doborimaru apparently was what he called a shadow boxer, he used a combination of unarmed Taijutsu and Genjutsu to defeat his opponents. As he spoke he mentioned how he was a very powerful shinobi not even thirty years ago. Airi had personally been extremely interested and she was informed that if she ever wanted to come visit him he made frequent trips on certain times of the month to the Kumogakure hotspirngs. They would play shogi exchange news and maybe she culd learn a little Taijutsu from him.

De Cevitate Attonbitus was where a lot of the agriculture and civilization seemed to be. As she watched the mountain scape change into the lowlands Airi was filled with Nostalgia. Airi personally wished she had time to stop off and eventually make it to her hold small town but this mission would not be the trip for that. Airi began to wonder how her family was doing, it had been almost a year and half since she joined as a shinobi. She exchanged letters with them monthly but other than that…well she really missed them.
Raiden’s eye itself was even larger than Kumogakure and that shocked Airi. She had never been there before and heard it was a major city but without any sort of reference she just could not believe it. Even just coming here and trying not get lost would be a monumental task. She had been warned to keep her bag close and to avoid strangers but…she felt pretty confident in her abilities. A small thirteen year old shinobi girl would be the last thing anyone would want to see if they tried to mug her.
Airi wished she could sightseeing while she was here since the Shogun’s Palace and the large church of Raiden was…alas it was not to be though. Once again she needed to make a trip out here at some point in her life. The way the city looked made it kind of pretty but mostly it looked like a large military fortress. Power seemed to be a very real and big deal in Kumogakure and Airi needed to remember to not look nervous or afraid.

It took Airi a solid half a day just to find Akane Shin’s residence and when she got there she was greeted by…well an average looking man. Maybe it was because most of the shinobi she had met recently were…well…on the pretty side so seeing someone who more so reminded her of her dad was a bit shocking. “Are you Irie Airi? Well get inside…I’ll feed yea and then you can sleep. We got an early day tomorrow.” Airi had been a bit shocked by the way he spoke but she of course nodded and said, “Yes Sir, thank you for the opportunity to work for you.”
The night went uneventfully and as the moon swept across the sky it was not long before Airi would awake the following morning. The day had went mostly…well wrong. The reason he had wanted a wood based jutsu used was mainly to move their nature based chakra through the plants to find the better ones and stimulate them. At first Airi was having serious problems where she would over infuse them and cause them to quickly die after she touched them. This proceeded until about mid-day when she got the navigation and control right. The rest of the day however did not improve the results…needless to say he was getting very, very annoyed with Airi. The only way she could really make it up to him was to cook him a meal, which she needed to pay for, and then complete some of his chores around the house. Only then did he agree to teach her some very basic herbalism. No plant knowledge but ways of preservation and mixture techniques. Said a lot of the medical stuff done nowadays lost its human touch and thus made the medicine not as good. After her rather long lecture on new versus old science she was finally allowed to get some sleep.

The following day they were really only have moderate success. What he had hoped was that the plants would not only grow faster but maybe a mutation would be caused by the chakra. Sadly, none of that seemed to show. It was not until afternoon when Airi had gotten particularly tired and lazy that she suddenly infused not only a nature based chakra but also some of her holy chakra. At first the plant seemed to wither and die. Airi brought it to Akane-san and as he inspected he noticed a peculiar shine within the petals. Upon further investigation he started to realize that her holy chakra could have a cleansing effect. The problem really came from the fact she was needed to make this change…
It did not take long for Airi’s job to change dramatically. Instead now of going to the fields and trying to cause a mutation, now she was just going to use wood nature and then holy nature chakra on the seeds he aimed to plant. With any luck…he hoped that the plants would have a benefit in some manner to his particular means of doing medicine.
Airi was too exhausted to even eat by the end of that day and Airi passed out without a single thought. The next morning followed the same ritual and by mid-day she had finished a completely different mission than she set out to do. He gave her a sealed scroll and said that payment and the approval of her work was sealed inside. As a token of gratitude to her however he gave her a few special made solider pills with her holy plants brewed into it. He also gave her some holy tea to use in special situations whether they be ceremonial or special to her in some manner. As she took them she made sure to make a mental note that she should never give these to Rinko, nor Yamamoto.
Saying goodbye to Akane-san he mentioned that a similar C-rank mission may come around again in six months and that he hoped that she would come out again and do something similar, maybe even if they were efficient she would be able to get some paid vacation time on him.
While she could not say it was the most fun or eventful mission she learned a little and what she really looked forward to was having friends everywhere around the country whom she could be trusted on to help. If even one person suffered a bit less for what she did with these plants…then she was happy.
While the plant did not ever come to increase healing it was eventually used on cursed injuries, later known as demon’s bane according to the herbalist himself. With that though Airi went home for a much needed rest. She was putting her first of many C-ranks behind her.
