Long ago there was a clan of shamans called the Nigiri clan. They believe harming the land would bring misfortune. The hunted like animals and only took enough for survival. They believe all life was precious and give thanks to the animal that they slay. However not all share the peaceful sentiment with nature. A clan of Samurai’s known as the Tsubaki, hunted for sport. They invaded the territory of the Nigiri which was full of game. The Nigiri tried to protect the land and fought back, but they were no match against samurai’s steel. The Nigiri clan was defeated and was forcefully assimilated into the Tsubaki clan as a branch family and served as servants to the main family. After centuries the hatred of the Nigiri grew so much that they could not take it anymore. Now a resistance has been formed and they prayed to their gods for retribution. Their gods were spirits and demons of animals. The resistance is getting desperate and now one it trying to release a god. One with no father or mother but is born from the earth itself. They plan to release the Monkey god of mischief, who has been sealed under the mountain. If he is freed for his prison; he will surely bring chaos to the village. He must be recaptured no matter the cost. If it is true that the monkey god is free, they would need to head to the Port Cirrus. The monkey will likely steal back the weapon the Nigiri clan returned to the sea serpent god.
Shimete’s father is dead because he was suspected of resistance against the Tsubaki clan. The Nigiri loyalist killed Shimete’s father to save the clan. She strives to not be like her father, who is portrayed as a villain for betraying his clan. This is the reason she is doing this quest. It is in order to prove to herself that she is not her father’s child. It was just a year ago that Tsubaki Kuzuma, Shimete's master, went on the ritual of enlightenment. It was this event that he returned blinded by a demon curse. Shitmete always blamed herself for not having the courage to take the ritual with him. The demon was Kojoro the fox goddess of vengeance. Shimete will not have let another Nigiri deity harm her master.
The Heartland of Kaminari no Kuni is a land full of lush plant life and trees as far as the eye can see. Somewhere within this dense forest is the prison for the monkey god. Unfortunately the location has been lost for centuries. Shimete was exploring the forest with her hired bodyguard Tetsuya. However she was going in one large circle. Shimete passes by the same fallen tree five times before she gave up and stopped for a moment. When she left the village it was sun rise; now it was all but noon and Shimete was getting hungry. Luckily she did have the foresight to bring some food with her. “Hey Tetsuya, gather some firewood and so we build a fire. I can cook something for lunch.” As she gathers wood for the fire there were howls behind her and all around her. Wolves came poking out behind the trees. She was out numbered ten to one in an unfamiliar territory. This was not a good situation to be in. They growl, bark and snap at her as they tighten the circle around her. They could smell the meat in her pack. One of the wolves stepped closer. He was big, grey and tall; he must be the alpha of the group. He looks at her curiously; his eyes were odd balled like her own. One was yellow the other blue. “A child of Moro.” Moro was a huge white wolf with sapphire eyes. She is the goddess of the hunt and it is said amongst the Nigiri clan that wolves with odd balled eyes were the children of Moro.
So this is what her father was trying to make her into. Her father was caught giving Shimete’s mother some sort of potion while she was with child. If it was not for the elder Shimete would not be alive today. The elder believe she could be a force of good if trained right. The fact that the wolf was hesitate to attack, gave Shimete an idea. She lays the meat down on the ground, “Please take this as an offering to Moro. All I ask is to allow us to travel through your territory.”
