Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

A golden dusk was falling coalescing over the hostile lands of Marsh Country. With Spring having started a month prior, the flora and air had taken a fresh glow of vibrant greens and the crispness of a just past winter. In the vast landscape painted pictures of dominating and jagged mountains; at the feet of each lay an abundance of lush fields of tall-grass, thickets and varying sizes of streams to rivers that strew about the landscape in a rather picturesque manner. Although to any fellow that wasn't educated in the history of Marsh, may never realize that many of these now gorgeous lands used to be savage-lands of war, blood and ruin-- Leading to the now understanding to why in these highly resourceful lands... Bore few habitats of the human form and intellect.

Here our long-elapsed travelers, and newly arrived Kaminari no Kuni denizens have found themselves. Within' the brush of a large patch of trees, all of which stood impressively at nearly a hundred and fifty feet each, it was clear to the former that this area would serve as a valuable place to setup their temporary camp during their arduous travels. Equally so for the latter, given that night had begun falling during their searches and travels- They were due to find somewhere quick to setup camp. Only to find that, in the ill-populated lands. Had a make-shift camp burrowed deep within' the heavy cover of the trees.
With two tents pitched; one slightly wider than the other. And a campfire crackling in it's center of the defined boundaries of this campsite; further inspection brought sight to two comfortably sitting companions.
One of which looked to be in his mid-late twenties, adorned with scraggly shoulder-length tar-black hair that in some parts were cuffed into a pony-tail that hang down the nape. His skin as it were, looked tinted by the sun from exposure; with a notable scar that bore down the length of his right-eye and to the jaw-line. His attire gave suspicion that he were likely a nomad of trade, with furs, tanned leathers, and scales that acted as one could propose was something akin to armor. Lastly, his eyes- a dour-gaze matched to his facial expression of a somber man; attention driven towards the rotisserie-slung rabbit meat over the fire. However, something of his presence indicated a strong awareness of his surroundings.

Next to him sat a young reddish-brown haired girl in which was worn with purpose, well-kept and slung in a pony-tail for any excess that lived on her back. With large globes of verdant curiosity for eyes; too directed to the food that lay await for their stomachs. Her attire was, and is entirely up to the player (as I can't find anything on it). Saving the broken immersion some; neither of which appeared to be plainly obvious in their affiliation.
However, neither bore any weaponry so to speak either.

With some incredibly keen eyes; one may notice that the larger of the two tents, appeared to have the sounds of light-snoring. And perhaps petite feet siting out the folds at the end.

"Yare... I know I dislike the usage of needless energy expenditure. However, these passed few weeks have really been something, huh." My eyes drifted from the hung food to my companion, and grand-student. I wonder if it's appropriate to call one a grand student... But she is Siu's to be lead- And the latter by me... Why do I bother with these menial thoughts-- Hunger, perhaps. Adjusting how I sat, with my rump propped on a log that made-shift for a stool. Either of my elbows had commanded towards my knees. A preferable position, given the need for quick movement; but allowed for adequate rest and posture.
A bellow of air pushed out of my nose, keeping my breathing steady and my mind acute to my surroundings-- I would much prefer not having a replay of the last time we were ambushed. Bloody Marsh-landers are tricky to sense given their distinct lack of chak- Pausing, I let my mind settle. And my eyes resumed their attention to the fire afore me. "You did well though, so far your travel-capability and astute attention to adapting to the circumstances you're presented with have really been established as true to your skill-level. But never allow yourself to fall into complacency." Giving myself time to naturally breath, basking in the glow of the fire was also- a nice touch. Needless to say, I had been alerted to the presence of two others- beyond my three.. Four. Truthfully, if it weren't for the forth, I may not have noticed with their current levels of chakra.

At the moment, I decided against acting to their arrival. Merely directed my attention to Shizuka; an aired cough to draw her attention. My eyes directing her own to the distant shadows that lingered all around us- Namely, two of the human stature. Perhaps my nerves were a bit better off than they usually are; given that I had laid a number of kunai all around the camp and the surround region, it would be fair to say that the grounds were free reign for me if the need arose. "But. I think- There needs to be some mention of conserving oneself; you never know when such a need will surface that you will have to do or die. And if you've used everything on lesser obstacles, you will be faced with a tragic loss." I sniffed, allowing the gentle loft of smoke fill my lungs. A smell, I'll always appreciate and take when I can. I then lowered my voice in which only Shizuka could truly interpret. "Wouldn't you agree? But- Perhaps we should save the words of wisdom to share with our newest guests. Would you mind fetching them?"

  • While I set it up for Shizuka to post first, if your characters are so emboldened to approach on their own. They're welcome to; I just know Shizuka will be waking up soon to my post time.
  • None of the three of you are under any obligation to word match me. I spent most of it just defining a scene, interactions are more valuable.
  • While I do try to do a post a day, we all have lives. And ultimately, have all week to complete this. So as long as you try to reply, we should be good.
  • Have fun, any questions. Just ask.

Still recovering from the Genjutsu class Shieo had thrown at her, Shizuka took naps whenever she could because half of the time the young Senju was haunted by nightmares. Having stolen a hug from Siu today as well, she was sleeping soundly. After all, having climbed the trees they had set up their camp beneath and explored the grassy area around them had taken its share of energy as well. Turning onto her side she was woken by the smell of food tickling her sensitive nose. Her stomach grumbled softly in response, but she considered to stay where she was. In fact, she probably would have gone back to sleep if it wasn’t for Shieo’s call for attention. The gentle noise had reached Shizuka’s keen ears without any trouble and a couple of seconds later the brown haired 4-feet and 6 tall student came from out of the tent with her left hand hiding her yawning.

“Hmm?” she hummed sleepily. Then sheepishly smiled and nodded when he mentioned that being a bit more tactical and responsible in general might be a good idea.

The spot next to the crispy growing rabbit looked rather tempting and as she planned to take it Shieo revealed the reason why he had woken her up. Bright green eyes narrowed a little when the word ‘guests’ fell from his lips. Unsure what type of guests they would turn out to be Shizuka felt her muscles tense a bit.

A quick fumbling with seals brought forth a little crystal ball which would serve as her third eye. Letting it disappear between the branches and leaves above their heads, she turned to face the direction Shieo had looked in. As the eye rose to higher levels she noticed the figures herself. There, between long blades of grass, were the newcomers.

Still a bit on edge she carefully set out into the direction they were approaching from. The farther she went, the colder it became. The evening air had her shiver a little. She would have preferred to be asleep, but that didn’t appear to be an option any longer. So, with her head high and hands prepared to counter potential attacks, she proceeded until her eyes could make out the faces.

The tall figures, in her opinion, seemed to belong to the same village as Shizuka and the duo at the bonfire. Luckily the headband was visible, or the Senju’s voice might have been less friendly. “Hi there,” she greeted, still prepared for potential sneak attacks, but mostly relaxed. One could never be certain about the ones dwelling outside of the village.

“seems like you’re far away from home.” The disarming smile she kept on her lips should indicate that she was no enemy of theirs. Though she realized a bit too late, she did not have any signs of the Cloud on her, because she was just a student.

As the crystal eye kept on soaring through the sky looking for any threats or traps, she gestured for them to come along. Having gotten to know Shieo a little she was pretty sure that the man had done all the preparations necessary before moving onto dinner. He didn’t appear to be the type to bump into the same thing twice. She liked that about him. And there he was, still roasting the rabbit. Siu, however, appeared to be out of sight. Perhaps this was some sort of precaution. Shizuka didn’t comment on it. Instead, she decided to introduce herself.

“My name is Senju Shizuka, what do you guys go by?”

The wilds beyond the wind guarded human nests deep in the mountains were the only place where a man, shinobi or otherwise, could find themselves at peace enough to reach out and touch the supernatural world which spent most of its time behind the impenetrable membrane of worlds. Breaches were uncommon and difficult to locate for most but shinobi, through some method, were able to purposefully breach it and press their hands against this worldly shielding long enough to shear a hole in it. In order to begin learning that process however one needed to know someone or something that already could and beasts were only found where their world could come in contact.

This fact of life had driven the youthful Genin out to the wilderness once more, ambitious, hungry, and entirely insistent on finding anything that he could ensnare long enough to draw out its secrets. Knowing things made you stronger and being stronger meant you could decide what things were worth knowing.

Unfortunately, in the same manner he intended to leech off of another creature’s abilities and harness them for himself, he was being similarly drained by the clinging girl that seemed to intend to make his life that little bit more complicated. Yukiin had been fairly careful to leave the village proper without being tailed as he didn’t like giving free information to anyone that they didn’t need but somehow the bird found its way to perch on his shoulder once more...or rather dangle from his neck.

He didn’t seem to be able to shirk her, the colder he made his body and the colder he made the surrounding air the more at risk he was of unintentionally gluing her to himself as the two party’s skin was frozen together, but whether she knew there was a limit and was calling her bluff or if there was some other reason...she wasn’t leaving. The puppeteer had considered trying to put her in one of his puppet scrolls for the past hour or so but he couldn’t determine, safely, what would happen if one tried to put something living into a scroll that had any mark of sentience to it. You could put animals in there just fine, they came out a little disoriented usually but Yukiin preferred to use living things as his Substitution targets in a more traditional fashion whereas most modern shinobi were using rocks, logs, etc.

A human though...he just didn’t know. The boy had no intention of killing her and thus didn’t think it was wise to pursue this course of action, but maybe the next time he found a lively corpse or something he’d give it a whirl. For now he just kept pushing the drafts of wind that came to him towards her face when he was diverting them, taking the opportunity of this lovely hiking trip to practice his mastery of air, water, and ice.

The land had reclaimed itself from the winter’s crispness but it had not been so distant that Yukiin couldn’t find its markings, leaves and flowers freshly blooming to full color but with their dead counterparts still forming the basis of the ground where the grasses poked through. Each living thing was touched gently by his presence, cooling into dew that did little actual harm and left no visible marks. It would be easy to carve a path of frosted petals but it would also be easy to follow if anyone with poor intent wished to do so, though he did mark a few choice branches so he would be able to find a path back if things became...complicated.

The land held quite the liquid bounty, even in these places where it was firm enough to hold to the roots of these implanted giants whose boughs stretched further than a morning’s yawn to capture every ounce of light before it could reach the world below. Wildlife scattered, quietly but predictably, from his steps and he suspected that his presence in these circumstances would be difficult to conceal regardless of his best intentions. There were simply too many variables to consider and he’d made camp a few times already as the journey was a few days out, ensuring that he could be caught up to by any interested party...so he’d just have to be prepared to respond to anyone who pressed him.

Thus the intrusion of another speaking party wasn’t entirely unexpected and the impression that Yukiin was more relieved than terrified was clear across his face as he tapped his passenger’s forehead with the back of his knuckle, rapping twice against her skull to rouse her from sleep as she had been uncharacteristically quiet lately and likely had somehow managed to find rest in this situation. The motion was deliberately visible, his arm crossing in plain way as a sign.

“The speaker is simply a shinobi of Kumogakure, a name with no repute or record and thus not worth attention. She may feel more inclined to share if she prefers.” Yukiin spoke clearly, the chilling effect around him retreating back into his body and leaving with it more of the scattered dew drops of melted ice crystals. As he spoke his breath made less and less sign of its presence until his area of influence matched the surroundings once more. He knew little of the Senju but he knew that what he was called within the village was Haku, not his family name but apparently the distinction of his abilities and that Senju was not Haku. This lead to the logical conclusion that she might not be comfortable in his below freezing aura.

He stepped forward and followed where he was led, examining the girl more closely as he did so, largely to cross-reference her features with the one he was hoping to find and considering her hair color that made it more or less unlikely even if her fair skin had caught his attention to make the comparison in the first place.

This one was not the Byakko girl, unfortunate. She carried herself oddly and her eyes and hair were wrong and that was really the only thing Yukiin wanted to know about her at the moment. Knowing the other kunoichi in his surroundings the less he knew and the less time he spent with her the safer it was for him anyway...

The village proper was a loud place for one such as Kei. Loud in a way that could not be avoided by simply going inside. The sounds, scents, and feeling were overwhelming and resulted in nasty headaches when exposed to for too long. Having been forced to go shopping for food, Brother was away on some errand, she was quickly developing a headache. It did not help that the places where she went stunk of different types smoke. A smell that made her head feel light and her throat tickle. Just as she was about to abandon her trip she was sidetracked by a familiar feeling. Overpowering the taste of smoke that coated her throat was the taste of spearmint. Kei recognized that taste, it was that of the older boy she had recently met. She quickly decided to abandon her shopping in order to pursue the more interesting option of following the person she had named Yuki. Once she focused in on his feeling he was quite easy to follow. Weaving through the village she followed him to outside the village gates. At this point she had a decision to make, Kei could follow him to wherever he was going, a journey she did not know the length of, or she could fall go back to her shopping. Swiftly taking stock of the equipment she had on her, she wasn’t a complete imbecile who was willing to go on a treck without proper supplies, she decided she had enough to last quite a few days. Brother had been overprotective of her before he left and had basically glued a sealing scroll to her that contained more than was needed for simply doing some shopping or even for a week long trip.

Decision made she grinned evilly, an expression did not quite work on her face, before screaming at the top of her lungs “Yuki!” Flinging herself at the older boy and attaching to him. Her arms went securely around what she assumed to be his neck and her legs anchored around his waist. She giggled slightly as she realized she had misjudged something. She had been aiming for his back but she somehow ended up wrapped around his front. Deciding to go with it she continued to cling to him “Kei is so happy to see you! Where are you going?” Her babbling continued as she was carried away from the village. Yuki did not seem to have any problems carrying her so she continued to hang on and talk. Kei wasn’t completely useless either. She did help the older male to find food, it was easy for her to sense, and subsequently kill, animals for cooking. The first night Yuki had tried to abandon her in a middle of the night, an action that was not allowed. As punishment, she decided to sing while she was carried by him the next day. Thus their days began to take a pattern. During the day Kei would either talk or sing then they would stop to make camp where she would kill someone animals for dinner, later in the night Yuki would try to leave her behind, she would inevitably catch him then they would sleep. Sometimes they would stop to wash their clothing and themselves. It was an easy pattern to keep though she had to wonder why it was always so cold. She didn’t think it was winter in Cloud but with how cold she felt she had to assume her information was wrong. The cold only made her burrow closer to Yuki as he carried her through the day.

It wasn’t until the twenty-fifth day that something changes. She had been napping on her partner, something she had become an expert in when she felt something strange at the edge of her range. Rousing slightly she focused in on the feeling before quickly being overwhelmed by a strange combination of coffee with an undertone of fire/smoke and orange blossoms. Staying mostly asleep she clung tighter to Yuki. As the orange blossoms got stronger she stayed relaxed physically as her mind became sharper. She heard orange blossom’s introduction then promptly forgot her name as her carrier rapped on her head. Pouting up at him she listened to what he had to say. If her eyes were ever open she would have rolled. What she did notice was that the area around her felt warmer and she wondered if they had hit a warm spot. Seeing as Yuki wasn’t going to answer the Orange Blossom she decided to do it for them. Turing towards the smell she said, “Kei is Kei and Mr. Grumpy Pants is Yuki.” She didn’t actually know Yuki’s name, Yuki was a convenient nickname she used but if he wanted his name used he would have introduced himself. “Where are we going? Why are you out here? Who is Coffee? You smell really nice.” The questions and comments continued to come as she was carried closer to the coffee person.

“Where are we going? Why are you out here? Who is Coffee? You smell really nice.”

With my ears perking at the new-found voices that slowly paced themselves towards the camp-site. I gave the tent that belonged to Siu and Shizuka a furtive glance, reaffirming that Siu was in-fact still there and sound asleep. I exhausted a breath, something akin to a sigh- or perhaps a means to moderate my nerves and state of focus. Well, the two from what I saw didn't appear to be trouble. Or terribly aware of where they are... I briefly mused the thought, raising a hand from dangling off my knee; all to run through the fringe of my hair. A quick means to make myself a bit more presentable. If I were to be frank; I don't think you would be sending Shizuka if you classed them as a danger. My attention seized in the real-world for the briefest of moments, to acknowledge the metallic grinding tone that inhabited my mind. Perhaps. I returned my elbows to my knees, a resolute position; comfortable too.

It was only moments later that I turned my sight to the break in foliage, a brush that acted as a natural visual guard to the rest of the woods. From the shadows were illuminated to be the three that centered in my previous mental conversation. With my expression worn as dour as usual, I'm certain my first impressions were otherwise a bit perturbing. Given the matter of our location and the attire I chose to adorn.
I studied them in a lapse of silence. I assume it only lasted two or three seconds; long enough I waited for them to notice and examine their newfound surroundings- And in turn, myself. IN efforts to avoid any sort of surprise or act that might encourage hasty reactions from the guests.

"Evenin' ... A bit of a surprise that two youth such as yourselves to be this far out-- And unsupervised." I carried my tone with a sense of dryness; emphasizing the last bit of concern, given the age disparity; I suspect they would have formed rather immediate thoughts and opinions on myself- So guising anything would be the opposite of helpful, I figure at least. Narrowing my eyes if only briefly, I then returned my focus to the food that was about done roasting over the fire. For some reason-- They're always kids, times like this make me question just how many people are my age... All things considered-- You're rather dated for the type of profession you serve; assassin. I raised my brows, in retort to the mental comment Right....
"Well, given the choice of attire and band of affiliation. I s'pose I can offer some hospitality-- More-so you're children." Ending the sentence with a droll in my voice, I then extended my left palm towards the gathering of logs that offered to be suitable seats. "Afraid we didn't pack extra tents or what have-you, but a Kaminari native to a Kaminari native; I'll allow you temporary stay here.." Given the new-found light of the fire, and their angle to examine myself- I wagered they were capable of discerning the Kumogakure shinobi symbol that was embroidered on my attire, even though it was a bit faint given the worn-condition of my clothing.
I had awaited for them to settle, say their peace and perhaps talk amongst themselves a little bit. With the way I tunnel-visioned onto the fire and food; I wager they knew I was more of a 'stick to the conversation' sort. "I must ask-- Why are you two out so far from the village?" Given the severity of the question, I sharpened my tone and directed my eyes to the white-haired boy; whom bore the headband, in which I wagered was the lead of their little duo. "Given the political integrity of this country-- It's not exactly safe."

Leaving my question in the air, I leaned forwards and started dismantling the mount for the cooked rabbit. With some deft motions, I had started dissecting the meal into portions that could be spared among the increasing number of residents. Exhausting a momentary yawn as night was slowly casting into a dominant state over the lands, my old bones started kicking in from the years of strain I live and lived through. Given the nature of our camp, and the matter that I personally travel lightly- And that Shizuka and company only carried what they needed for themselves. There was a distinct lack of plates or the like. Such I simply placed the separated parts onto an accessible flat stone that was near the fire. "Grab what you need to keep yourself filled." I had motioned lightly with a hand, afore grabbing a piece myself and biting down.

Here on out, I gave the three my attention.

Yuki sounded like an apt name for someone whose hair was as white as snow. His hair, however, wasn’t what Shizuka found the most fascinating about the duo. The girl who clung to him like a leech was way more interesting if you asked the young Senju. For a brief moment, the sight had her wondering if she was injured. Perhaps that’s why she was being carried by the male with a very odd way of communicating. Maybe both of them were still in shock from whatever had transpired. Anyhow,, she knew they would figure out whether injuries were the case here soon enough. Shieo would surely be curious as well, she imagined.

Caught slightly off guard by the comment about smelling nicely, she smiled awkwardly. “Thanks,” I guess. She wasn’t sure how in the world this one could smell her.. perhaps she had some sort of ability to trace scents? Or a very keen nose?

Maybe she’s just crazy.., a small voice in the back of her mind claimed. Yes, there was always that too.

Settling next to the fire like she had wanted to some moment ago, she stifled another yawn. There was the temptation to crawl back into the tent. Siu was peacefully sleeping and Shizuka was slightly jealous of her now. Slowly blinking the thought was forced out of her mind, and soon she found something to replace it with. Food.

Allowing a moment to pass out of politeness, she took one of the pieces Shieo was putting on the flat stone and blew gently on the hot meat. Her fingertips were already becoming numb, but she refused to let go of the deliciousness. With an angry stomach, she carefully set her teeth into the snack and happily chewed on it. Some grease dripped down her chin. She wiped it clean with the back of her hand. Cleaning herself would be a worry for later, right now she had people to talk to and food to eat.

“Yeah, have you guys been out here for a long time?” Having finished chewing she threw in a question before returning to her piece of the rabbit.

Mentally forming a picture of the lands around them and what she had been taught at the Academy, Shizuka vaguely knew where they were. It had taken a while for them to get here, too. And not everyone had been friendly. The memory of being attacked had her eyes slid toward the newcomers. Was there a chance that their presence was noticed as well? If so, were they safe?

Unsure why she was already worried about two strangers, she silently told herself that Genin were stronger than her. Siu, back when they had met, had been leaps and leaps ahead of her. So, with this Yuki being here, the duo would probably make it wherever they were heading, and then back home, safely.

"This one made a...minor misjudgment...yes...in the distance between the homeland and this place but once feet were on the ground and the journey had been initiated turning back was not an option. A shinobi is accountable for their decisions, even when they are...slightly uninformed, half considered, or without proper consultation of a map..." Yukiin responded, more speaking to himself than anyone else after being questioned about the journey.

He'd anticipated that the travel to this place, which had been described to him as the ideal spot to reach a communion with the natural world and far enough away from shinobi society to be interfered with, would be a matter of days and was unpleasantly surprised to find the journey taking weeks. He'd largely condensed the time in his memory down to a few relevant days with the majority being uneventful, though eventually he did have to break down and buy a map which illuminated his error, not that he shared that information with his traveling companion.

The Genin scratched the back of his head, tugging at stray hairs as he gave a half-hearted smile and took a position near the fire, largely out of respect for the man in front of him who seemed to be knowledgeable enough to be a superior to himself. Even if he wasn't, he was being hospitable and while the Haku youth detested this kind of unwarranted warmth he plopped himself down regardless with only a minor wince to accompany the action of suddenly plunging himself into the unbearable temperature difference.

He made no effort to take the food, however, as while he wished to be respectful he had no desire to put himself at needless risk. Sitting wasn't safe but it was a minor degree of unsafety, he failed to detect any airborne poisons and considering the man and the girl were sitting safely within them and within the range of the flames which would likely neutralize the airborne toxins...it was safer than usual. Food or drink, on the other hand, could retain a toxin in such circumstances more easily and Yukiin was simply not the sort to trust when he was the sort to be untrustworthy. Given the opportunity, if he had wanted to eliminate a pair of shinobi he'd have gone with a similar arrangement, invited them in, poisoned them, and then waited for them to fall asleep and be paralyzed or dead.

A slow acting poison would be best, fast-acting would alert the body too quickly and they might respond, making conflict more likely. Conflict would be a waste of energy and chakra, not that he thought this disheveled pile of assumed-to-be-man who allowed his affiliation to be as worn as the rest of himself was the type to care about conservation. This put him at some ease however, if the man was so loose with his ties to the world of shinobi then it seemed similarly likely he was as loose with their particular skillset. He was older, likely stronger, and more experienced but being out of practice was its own advantage if push came to shove.

The puppeteer took stock of the area with a pass of his eyes, giving the tents a slight furrow in response as these were areas he could not probe easily by sight alone and could contain potential adversaries. If he didn't have the suspicion that the pair here were shinobi he might've tried to manipulate the wind, pick up a tent flap, and see what was inside but that sort of unnatural action would bear his chakra and handseals or not it would be difficult to conceal as 'just a gust of wind' to the informed. Yukiin was unhappy with that fact but had no other options coming to mind that would allow him to remedy the situation so he diverted his vision from them, turning to the man who had spoken to him before and used that ever unwelcome term - 'child'.

"He would like to clarify, children are the ones who never entered the academy or failed to graduate; those who chose to retain innocence rather than gain the ability to utilize chakra. He wishes to be respectful to his elders but must insist that children are part of the chakraless masses we are charged to protect." He paused, a flash of memories of what that process had been like loomed over him, talons sinking into his shoulders as they pressed them down before being rebuked with a crack of knuckles from the Genin's clenched fingers. "We are not chakraless, this one is not allowed to be a 'child' anymore than a branch is allowed to be a river."

“You’re welcome.” Kei sang to the other girl's response feeling slight prickles run along her skin. The feeling was similar to petting a cactus, it wasn’t painful but it felt odd none the less. As they continued to closer to the wherever the girl was leading the taste of coffee and smell of fire only got stronger. The fact that one of the feelings was a taste and the other a smell made her want to think they came from two separate sources. However, the overlay of the senses made her think that it was simply one person. The puzzle of whether it was one person or two kept her quite as Yuki sat down next to what she assumed was a fire. It was hard to ignore the sudden heat that surrounded her. During the past few weeks, she had gotten used to the chill that seemed to permeate the air around the pair. Even when they had been sitting by the fire the air had been slightly cold.

When they had entered the campsite a male voice had spoken up to talk to them. Kei could only assume it came from the person who was causing her puzzle. Being unable to open her eyes the only thing she could glean from him was that he sounded old. When he had finished asking why they were here the scent of fire got stronger for a second before fading into the background. That made her face in the direction his voice was coming from. He was presenting problems for the first was his strange scent/taste combination the other was that he tasted like coffee. Coffee was a bitter drink and there was nothing she hated more than bitter things. Thankfully being close to Yuki helped counter some of the awful taste. As he continued to talk she zoned out only to awaken when he mentioned food. Uncurling she reached a hand out quickly snatching up some of the meat, juggling it slightly because of the heat. If there was one thing she could always find, lack of eyesight or no, it was food. Settling back down to curl up in her traveling companion's lap she nibbled on it delicately ignoring the tiny ice pricks on the back of her neck.

Yuki seemed willing to answer the questions the older male posed to the pair so she focused on the food in front of her. She was paying enough attention to catch his last statement and in response to it she lifted a small fist and punched him in the shoulder. It was not a very strong punch considering that she had not uncurled from her position but it was still a tap.

“Kei thinks Yuki is being rude,” she said in a childish tone as she brought her arm back down “Compared to Old Man everyone is a child. Mr. Two are you from Kaminari also? Why are you out here? Did you kidnap Orange?” Kei gasped slightly. “Are you running away with Orange? Kei’s brother said kidnapping is bad and you shouldn’t do anything Brother says is wrong Old Man!” Despite her words, she made no sign of moving from her position.

"Hm..." I merely sounded, with my attention drifting amongst the three while they spoke. Well-- They're certainly... Unique. Musing the thoughts, eventually my eyes settled on Yukiin, whom made an effort to be the dominating voice of the three. In-spite some psychological quirks that they made no effort to disguise.
"So, you traveled to a disparaged country; otherwise wholly uninformed of it's state and affairs..." I knew it didn't take much for a person to understand the inflection in my voice, it was designed to imply some concern; both in their action and the worth of their decisions.
Allowing my eyes to flutter closed for a moment, I drew the piece of meat to my mouth and made an effort to ensure my body was properly sustained by food. Beyond such, I tried to not let the fact the young boy decided against feeding himself to bother me- I s'pose he's the sort that will defy hospitality with pride; or a contorted thinking it's logic. Care to wager that he is too full of the title and embellished worth of a shinobi to understand that people- can sometimes, just be people... Can't say as I'm interested in wagering on something you're a bit too informed on, nuances of a teacher after-all.
I merely responded to my thoughts with a quiet 'hmph'.

I resumed my attention to vision, watching the three with some intrigue. After-all, I never did get to see Shizuka interact with peers all that much. A method to gain insight on one of my students, with the bonus of learning of others that hailed from the same village. It wasn't much later that the boy referred to as 'Yuki' had started scanning the surroundings of the camp, in a regular darkness- and those of unrefined practice in awareness may have missed it- Probably. I couldn't help but slowly, and clearly raise an eyebrow in response. On edge, wonder if they encountered hostiles out here. -- Hm, perhaps not. Neither looks worn enough for that to have unfolded. Paranoid, I s'pose.
While 'Yuki' divulged some evidence to my former hypothesis of pride, I remained silent in efforts to allow him to voice his concerns and thoughts on the comment. And upon completing his peace, I brought a hand to my chin; tilted my head ever so slightly and squinted.

The intent was to drive a point of silence, a moment and the air to contemplate on the thought that he differed to my observation. Afterwards, I cleared my throat to draw the attention to my persons. "It appears-- That you've been unfortunately uneducated in a few forms of social graces, and self-respect." Allowing my hands to fall to my lap; drawing in my feet to cross them and get comfortable atop the log I deigned to be my seat for the night. "I would like to clarify. When I referred to you as children; it is, because in-fact you are... It's not an insult, nor a ploy to demean your standing in the world; mentally, physically and in mere tangible understanding of the world's clock-work- You are by definition, a child. But to branch off the river. It is a bit wounding, to see that you've grown to have a clouded understanding of a shinobi, and perhaps what it means- Or how it reflects on being a person. By adhering to such a role, you should never allow yourself to divide yourself from people, because you too; are a person. And to be respectful of one's existence, should recognize the facts that lay before them." I drew my attention, if only briefly to Shizuka; enticing her to ensure she too, was listening. "I would also; would like to bring to light. That if you truly think that being chakraless, is in essence the existence of being beneath us-- I advise you hand me your headband, so I can have you removed from the ranks when I return to my post in Kumogakure. It's a twisted, and wholly; wrong understanding as to your role as a shinobi. And what your job is." I cleared my throat, and reached to the back of my waist-band. Strapped there was a water-skin, going through the simple process of decapping it and taking a drink from it. "To make clear, it's not a threat- but as a superior in age, and rank. It is a piece of advice, with a stipulation that you have the ability to back out, knowing that you may not be suited to what you think you've gotten yourself into. I cannot say for certain the rules that brought you into the ranks, but they are there to have you trained- absolutely. But it's not a means to make you a superior-class, or a machine." I capped the water-skin, returning it to it's home. Given the moment, I granted myself a moment to exhaust a breath; I myself felt tension in the matter that I went into a role, I came out here to take a break from.

Upon Kei's retort to her companion, I cracked a bit of a smirk. Contrasting heavily with my prevalent dour-look. "I do not believe he is intending to be rude; he's just learning. But, to answer your questions. I am from Kaminari, and I am a Chūnin; a head-instructor for the Academy at Kumogakure." As she asked my reasoning to be out here, I granted a pause- I wanted her to know that I designed to give her a thought-through answer. "Part of being human, is to ensure that your health is taken care of. Mental, as much as physical; so I wished to take a break and a vacation- To travel for sometime. Besides, these sort of things can be valuable to help one develop themselves; to reflect on their past- And focus on improving their future. As... For kidnapping? Afraid not- Shizuka, and our sleeping companion in the tent are both my students from the village- Duty called for them, and we ran into each other on our own separate journey's. A twist of fate, perhaps." Extending my arms above my head, I interwove my fingers together and actioned a stretch for my arms, back and shoulders.

"And- I s'pose, call it habit. But some education for the two of you; I noticed your scouting Yuki. If I were truly intent on assaulting you two- It would have been when you first entered the forest. Bringing the risk to my companions is a foolish motion. Even if trapping you, or ambushing you were an option. A shinobi shouldn't allow the unknown get too close if they considered them an enemy, you never know what they're capable of." I cast a brief, and reassuring smile- I knew it would have the opposite effect. After-all, I needed them to recognize a few flaws in their movements.

Enjoying the rabbit, she figured that there was always a chance of the male being of a higher rank than a Genin. Shieo wasn’t wearing his Chuunin jacket, so perhaps this guy had opted to do the same. However, she wasn’t sure why he would keep the forehead protector on such a visible spot if he hadn’t meant to draw attention to what village he was affiliated with.

Lightly tilting her head she examined the girl now that the pair was sitting down. Oddly enough Kei was still glued to her friend, or was it lover of sorts? Shizuka wasn’t sure what was the case but it kept her attention on them until she noticed that Kei’s eyes were closed. Unsure if it meant injury or blindness from birth, she turned to face the fire as not to stare. After all, she didn’t want to be impolite even if the girl couldn’t see it.

What did cause her to glare to the side was Yuki’s definition of children. While she didn’t bother thinking about the charkaless comment, she did feel slightly insulted because she too hadn’t graduated the Academy, yet. That, however, didn’t make her incapable of dealing with matters that real children couldn’t handle. The white-haired guy was comparing apples with pears if you asked her. One’s abilities didn’t really make them adults, the way they went about things did, right?

She frowned, then silently bit into her next piece. It kept her distracted for long enough, but eventually, Shieo spoke up and that had her facing the little group once more. She could live with what he was saying, but probably because she respected him as an instructor and a Shinobi. Knowing that she wasn’t very objective when it came to people and taking criticism from them, Shizuka slowly blinked when the man turned to her. At least it was only briefly. Apparently, he only wanted to make sure that she was following his lecture. She didn’t mind. She would have if he had ended up scolding her, though, because she didn’t feel like she had done anything wrong. Being silent usually wasn’t a problem - she had learned that through the naps she took in classes.

“Hmm,” she waded through his lecture, finishing her food in the process. The twist where he said to take the guy’s headband really was unexpected. Her eyes narrowed a little. She tensed. There was always the possibility of Yuki taking this in some wrong way and deciding to strike. Hopefully, that wouldn’t be the case, but one could never be certain with strangers. So, with her hands now free from food, she mentally went through the seals she planned to use should it become necessary.

For now, though, she wanted to know why Kei had given her the nick she had. “Ehm.. if I may ask, why ‘Orange’?” She wasn’t a ginger, and the girl should have been unable to see the color of her hair even if she had been one. “I would rather have you call me ‘Shizuka’.” The young Senju then concluded with lazily narrowed eyes. Sleepiness was still visible on her features. The surroundings were nicely warm, the food was good. She felt like a cat and wanted to nap again, but that would have to wait.

Yawning, she settled into a more comfortable position and leaned back against one of the larger stumps the log had. “I hope you’ve notified someone of your departure, wouldn’t want for them to think that you guys went missing.”

"He respectfully disagrees with your assessment of this one's mindset, we are people but we are also weapons. The chakraless are not less than a shinobi, they are different and serve a different role in society. They labor to manage affairs of business, agriculture, politics, and many other things that require a finer hand than one that is holding a blade; we have different roles to play in this world, seperate but equal, and besides..." Yukiin's flesh had filled itself with a bright scarlet flashing that built up the longer he felt himself berated, voice losing much of its cooled tenor in favor of the grasping a hold of a rising emotional tide. "I've..."

He paused, the color in his skin fading from his knuckles as they had themselves tight against some backbone of civility. The Genin was speaking but it was adopting the same form as he'd experienced once before with that repulsive puppeter, when he refused to remain detached to himself it was no longer 'he' or 'they' or 'this one'...it was personalized..and he hated it. Why wasn't he allowed to guide himself on his own strings? What was wrong with that? To be a weapon? To be a tool for something greater?

He wasn't cut out to be a shinobi? That wasn't true. It wasn't permissible. The suggestion alone pressed against him and slithered past his skin, tearing at something further within it. To suggest something so heinous, so terrible...if he wasn't a shinobi then why had he undergone all of this training? Why the therapy? Why the medication? Why take him from his family? Why kill her? Disrespect. Disrespect. DISRESPECT. There wasn't a part of him that wasn't made to be a shinobi and he knew the difference between a man and a tool, what he wielded were tools, they couldn't decide their own fate...but neither could he...so what really was the difference?

That he understood guilt. That he understood debt. That he understood that what he was given was not free and that the only way to repay it was to do what he was told, to become stronger, strong enough to decide to be...something else, maybe. He didn't hate the chakraless, he envied them. They didn't have a debt to repay, they made their own choices, they lived their own lives. What did this man, abandoning his duties to play in some kind of underage hobo cult in the marshlands know about the shinobi of this generation? Maybe things were different for them, how else could he cast such aspersions? Was he lying? Had he stolen that headband? What was his game?

He didn't have to sit there and take it, not from him.

"I've taken too much to turn my back, every decision is one I own...to do anything else...to do anything else is to disrespect the ones who didn't get this far. The ones who didn't survive the transition, the ones who we died for the chance...the ones that were killed trying to prevent it most of all...if you're an instructor then...then you know what you made us do to get this far!" The youth, in a slip of something deeper rooted and seated than he'd realized in the intervening moments, let something out that was far louder than he'd intended and leaving a virulent bitter taste in his mouth to accompany it. Yukiin's teeth pressed down against his tongue, looking away and into the flames as if they had anything wiser to tell him.

"...what we chose to do...what we chose to do after we were told what we were...he meant no disrespect, everything the village has done for me, everything I was taught, and everything I've learned since has been in the interests of giving back what I have taken. Kumogakure has never slighted me...I mean...he...I mean..."

Yukiin stopped, a machine in still motion like its batteries had been unplugged. The flames sizzled and snapped back at him as his fingers unclenched themselves, the ambient temperature around him plummeting down until he was comfortable once more against the fire's desires to snap back at his efforts. Drops of mist in the air from the conflict slowly slid off the grasses surrounding him, slipping into the dirt about as far as he felt his gut go.

"It isn't an option to back out, the options are to succeed or to die trying. He would prefer the former, will accept the latter, and will not accept any alternatives. This one accepts any punishment for his outburst, it was a display of disrespectful aggression and crudeness unbefitting a representative of Kumogakure." Yukiin held his breath, expecting further merited punishment, verbal or physical, to be administered. Insubordination and disrespect of the displayed type was unwelcome, he would've liked to have left the scene entirely but that was cowardice and of the many traits he possessed - it wasn't one. Always forward. If this Chunnin expected him to reconsider his decisions, made for him or made by him, up until this point and to retire from his profession...well, he might as well kill him then. He could order his demotion, that was a possibility, but it wouldn't prevent him from being a shinobi. If it took him a hundred years and a hundred attempts he would be one, until he died.

Being a corpse was preferable to being a failure.

"Also." He added, looking at the girl in his lap with an ember of his previous passion. "Please detach yourself."

When Kei had woken up with Brother in Tea she hadn’t thought twice about what the impact of losing her memories would be. Brother had assured her that it didn’t affect anything, she had been able to retain her abilities as a shinobi and information regarding general things. The things she had lost only belonged to herself, such as any history. When she had lost that history she had also lost most of her knowledge regarding how lighting country gained its Academy Students and what they had to go through. That made the conversation she was witnessing very confusing.

Brother had said being a Shinobi was about following orders and completing an assigned task. He had gone on to explain how the system was set up but not into any true depth. Kei would have to ask him more about it when she got back if it was causing this much conflict. The not understanding expanded to include the people they called chakraless. Kei could only assume that they were referring to people who were not shinobis, a group she had little contact with. She didn’t understand why not being a shinobi would be something that was seen as bad. They farmed and made food a very important part of Kei’s life. If they didn’t exist Kei would have starved.

She slowly tensed up when the older man mentioned taking Yuki’s headband. The one thing Brother had stressed in his ‘This is a Shinobi’ lecture was the importance of the headband. He said it represented your loyalties and that it should be protected at all times. Yuki may not like her but she didn’t mind him and would do what she could to help him. Her tensing was less of a tensing and more of a shifting to be able to move quickly. To most outsiders it would appear as if she was getting into a more comfortable position.

While coffee and smoke man was talking she noticed the temperature around her getting warmer. That was an odd sensation considering when she was around Yuki it was normally very cold. When Yuki went off it reached the point where she was honestly considering moving to a cooler spot. Kei listened slightly more intently to what the colder one was saying. From what she could piece together it was something about the village and hardship. What really surprised her was that Yuki used I. Kei honestly didn’t know he could do that. Once he stopped speaking the temperature lowered to a more comfortable place. Yuki was just being overdramatic. Coffee guy was not showing any signs of being actually angry so Yuki was just being a drama queen.

That was when the attention turned on her. Deciding to give Yuki a semi-break she decided to comply with his wants. Sitting up she twisted at an uncomfortable looking angel to have her face level with his. “Sure!” she said in a singsong voice. Then she closed, the admittedly short, distance to his face and licked a strip of skin from his cheek to his brow. Making a disgusted face she quickly hopped of his lap. “Ew! Soggy peppers.”

Avoiding the heat pit, she picked up another piece of rabbit meat and threw herself next to the only other female. It seemed Coffee finally decided to answer her question she listened to him. So Coffee was an important teacher. That made a lot of sense considering the way he talked. The last thing he said she snorted at. “Kei and Yuki don’t have to worry about ambushes because Kei knows where everyone is!” she exclaimed before turning to her neighbor. “Orange is Orange because she smells like orange flowers.” To Kei that was a perfectly good explanation. “Would Orange rather Kei call her Hihi or Zuzu?”

I controlled my breath, and gave Yukiin an imposing amount of my attention; it was merely habitual that I gave those around me a sense of my time and mind. Besides. I reminded myself, This seems to be a hurt subject for him- And I imagine for others here as well. They're all young, and I now know of two that suffered at the hands of the militaristic abuse here already. With this flowing through my mind. I carefully rested my elbows to my knees, drew my hands together and interwove my fingers; designing the posture to help adhere to some comfort.

I stayed like this for sometime, witnessing the change and roller-coaster of emotions that fell over the visage of each of the three youth. The array of conflict and confusion that displayed for each of them only helped strengthen my conviction that this camp had slowly become a place of confidence in both wounds left opened, a in a means for those who desired to confide into issues that left unattended. For this, I didn't intend on interjecting while Yukiin at the moment had the stage, every word carried a weight and a burden on him. And any person with half a mind knew it would be disrespectful to simply discount, or severe the disclosure of the thoughts.

So I waited. Until the moment he had brought himself to a moment of conclusion. Making an effort of my own silence after Yukiin left the air stale with the words that drew on his own death. I felt stale hearing the words of a young-man, so eager to permit himself his own blood before being a human-being. I know that it is sometimes the means and methods of the CPSS and the core-- After-all... I know first hand, being one of them.

I exhausted a sigh, a gentle billow of smoke had aired from my mouth. Unintentional, however intrinsically focused from a stress I felt deep in my chest. I was careful to think, and I ensured that throughout my next speech that I regulated my voice to be calmed, droll and unpersuasive of any sort of aggression. "Where..." I paused, only for a few seconds; but long enough to indicate my choice of action into the conversation finally. Things had quietened down anyways; "Do I begin hm...?" I cautioned a furtive glance to each of the seated members, until I settled my gaze on Yukiin. "Given the circumstances, it sounds like you've been through enough to cause a bit of a divide in your heart and mind. Not to discount your feelings, with such short few words." Lowering my hands down to level with my thighs, a means to present myself more openly; rather than one to indicate thought. Although, I kept my hands interwoven as to indicate my own comforts.

"I will start where you started, thus to make things comfortable to follow; and my thoughts contrast to your own." Insisting a nod, I continued. "To begin, you may insist to deny the understanding of this. But we are people, with weapons; not the matter of being. And in the end, we too serve the same purpose as many of those who are chakraless. Each and every one of us served our jobs to help another survive. And in the end we are not separate; we simply wield a weapon because we can." Airing a breath, I adjusted how I sat only lightly; granting a natural pause of the thought and that I intended to move to the next thought. "Taken too much? An interesting phrase. First, you seem to misunderstand; I'm not saying you have to turn your back, but if you can't come to a human understanding of your place, it is advised you do. But I digress, to continue on I need to first address your ... 'Taken' I am going to step back metaphorically and apply those words to other students I've known. And on the grounds that you feel a sorry sense of obligation to anyone or anything. And attach that with the fact that you think that you getting to where you are is on the blood, bodies and wounds of others; you seem to have a rather selfish love for yourself. A bit twisted one. Their failures, their deaths, their problems; are not your own. You might think that it's some social sense of worth that you should be empathetic of their fate- But really, I'm pretty sure you're just trying to justify your own errors and broken personality on the faults of others... 'They lead you to being as broken as you are'; so much so you fail to talk from a perspective other than theirs. You're clearly afraid to come to terms that you're a person, and that you have your own bloody life to live. I hate to break it to you kid, but you're alive off by your own hands; and in this life I advise you live it for yourself as a person... You only get one ticket to live. and to throw it away willingly to think your some empty-ass tool. Is sickening." I closed my eyes, letting my chest deflate some and the tension in my shoulders to relax ever so slightly. "I think you need to understand something very clearly. You owe the village nothing but the act of working. It is your job, and we have a duty- But that duty does not dictate the loss of your sense of self and the willingness to live." I glanced to Shizuka, then to Yukiin once more. "I understand you won't come to terms with this over-night, but I want you to know; it is a necessary understanding you will have to come to. The thoughts will hurt, they will bury deep into the roots of your suffering. Everything you think you know, clearly is wrong for a person to think- You're a living being trying to be a machine, think about that. -- Each one of us that sits here are all humans, all people and every single one of us are shinobi. And the only one that is suffering at the thought of being a tool; is you. Your job does not define you, unless you want it to-- and from your speech patterns, and the trauma you've alluded to- You don't want that, you simply have come to think that the burden of other's is for you to bear... And it really isn't." I slowly stood up and stretched my back, looking off to the shadows of the adjacent woods. "And something a lot of us struggle with. Yuki, is the fact that a great deal of the past doesn't need to define us either. We will often forget to look in-front, beside and around us to realize that there are other people, other things and other opportunities waiting for our attention to come back to reality. If you dwell too long on something that was out of your control, and think it still controls you- You will be looking back fifty years from now, and realize that you let your life pass. And I think that in itself, is the ultimate sin a person can do to themselves." I turned my attention to the three-- Four if you count the sleeping lump in the tent. And gave a rather unsettling expression- One I virtually never do.

And presented a warm smile.

Curiously eyeing the guy with his white hair she had to agree with them being weapons, at least to some degree. His point of view was slowly unraveling into something she didn’t think to be that radical at all. At the start he had probably worded his thoughts in a wrong way, she decided, but then something shifted about him. A cold came crawling across the space between them. For a moment she thought to feel the fire lose its strength, but it wasn’t the fire, it was Yuki pushing back the warmth. She didn’t really like the sensation that came with the cold. Luckily it was easy to solve. A smooth slide across the log left her sitting closer to the fire, and further away from the older kid.

And not only older. He turned to be quite odd too.

From her new position, she listened to his mumbles with a look of confusion on her pale face. Something was wrong here. It reminded her of Genjutsu. Had Shieo done something? Was Yuki being tested without her noticing it? Or was she trapped in another messed up dream?

The idea had her worrying a bit. Her stomach quickly tightened into a nervous knot. Silently she traced her chakra levels, patterns, the flow - there appeared to be nothing foreign about it. The thought of using the necessary seals made to break free from Genjutsu vanished when Kei licked her ‘friends’ across the face.

Somehow Shizuka doubted that Shieo would have added that to whatever this would have been. Hence, with questions unanswered, she turned her attention to the girl whose eye color she did not know.

“No, I guess not, if Shizuka isn’t an option then I’ll go with ‘Orange’,” she let Kei know while being suspicious of the way she had so randomly licked Yuki. As long as she wouldn’t opt to do the same to her, well, Shizuka could live with being called a nice smelling fruit. In fact, she loved citrus fruits, so things could have been worse.

Catching Shieo’s look she kept quiet in order to not interrupt the man as he explained how things were for Shinobi. It had her wonder why anyone would think that they’re owing the village anything else but what the missions dictated. Things had to be done in order to protect their home, but also to keep those who didn’t have the ability to use charka safe, and help others.. and so many things, if she was honest with herself. Their lives were somewhat different from others, sure, but everyone had their own path.

Had he meant more with the phrase of them being weapons than she had assumed?

She thought them to be weapons because they were the defense and the offense of their country, not because they had no feelings or could be seen as mere tools. There was no way that she would agree with that. So, with a mild huff, she realized that her first assessment of this stranger might have been correct. Of course, it had her wondering just how bad the things he’s had been forced to go through were.

What was the Academy exactly?

Caught off guard by her own thoughts, she did what she usually did in order to make herself look calm and comfortable, she grinned lazily. “Shieo-san, don’t do that, you look creepy.”

Heart and mind? A...strange distinction to make. The mind guided everything, down to the core and down through one's soul like the pin holding the human machine together. If there was a distinction between what one thought and what one's heart...thought?...he was a foreigner in such strange subjects. A heart pumped blood, supplied the body with vital oxygen and fluids, but it had as little say in human affairs as anything else did beyond limiting the body's function. He could think whatever he liked and a heart could still be made to stop. Yukiin supposed the man meant the more abstract version, to entangle emotional matters into that particular organ, but found this to be an unsatisfying statement. How were they supposed to be in accord? They were different things, what one wanted to do and what one had to do were simply not going to align in a world where children's jobs were sometimes to gut grown men and liberate them of life and limb.

Few wanted to do that, though he admitted to some degree of pleasure in the task. The puppeteer didn't enjoy it per se, the warmth of a human body spilling its contents was unwelcome, but it had some aesthetic appeal and asserting control over someone else's life was its own catharsis. With weapons of his type, however, he didn't have to worry as much as that uncomfortable heat reaching him and could safely eliminate targets with them held at a distance. Not everyone held similar ideas and he doubted the kunoichi around him were similarly interested in that kind of wetwork. They barely seemed to understand what it was they had signed up for by being trained to use chakra in the first place.

The words being pressed against him were...invasive, to say the least. They didn't each find a mark but it was a scatter shot sufficient enough to push through the skin, embedding themselves in places that prompted some squirming in the hopes that they might settle elsewhere...they didn't. Some choice words were more like a framing shot around his vitals, he could feel them pushing in and putting pressure on his own functions, breathing most critically, as he seemed to be reflexively holding his breath. It was an unusual experience, it reminded him a fair bit of a combat situation but no blows were being traded. The flesh treated these the same, verbal or physical, blows were blows.

But he still didn't fully understand, he wasn't...born like this.

"It is an admirable effort to relieve this one of debts but..." Yukiin held out his hand, fingers closed and then unfurling as the wind and water around him answered the call his mind offered and they answered, willingly. Handseals, the art of giving a command to the natural world, were not required if you simply asked for obedience and were of the sort to receive it, to be born the right way to have the ear of this world's forces so eagerly. The elements shifted under the will of his chakra, crystalline forms crawling over one another like a pile of writhing currents, filling and competing, a chaotic and yet stable dance of jagged patterns until they'd completed their job of making a head-sized sphere of ice, polished to a mirror sheen.

"Some of us are born with debts we can't repay. This o- I...yes, I was born to be a shinobi before I had any say in the matter and I suspect that 'Senju' is another grouping of chakra-endowed bloodlines, am I wrong?" The Genin cast his gaze at the girl who'd offered her name to him earlier, narrowing his gaze as if he were trying to pick her apart like a scavenger bird. She didn't carry it, where was the weight? Where was the understanding? What was she being taught at here that made her so...carefree?

Yukiin frowned, throwing the sphere up and down as he spoke, allowing the repetitve motion to bring some calm to his body.

"If I were a normal man then I would've died in the process but instead I was the one who passed and left a trail of pain behind me. How am I supposed to take credit for what I did when I didn't devise the infusions, invent the tools, teach the doctors, or even have any say over the nature of my birth that enabled me to do what I had to? It was given to me, of no merit of my own. Even this isn't a matter of labor or work, the water and winds, ice and snow, mists and frost...they just listen. I order, its followed. Handseals, molding of chakra, the network manipulation or the ratio of body to spirit...its all fucking useless when I just think it and these elements obey."

The ball, stirring in response to some unstated thought, unfurled with rows of razors peeling away from its surface, retaining their crystalline sheen and not preventing the Genin from bouncing the ball casually in his hand. They didn't even cut him, switching his pattern of bouncing to using a finger to press it back up in the air inbetween its points.

"You know how long this took me to figure out? A week. In two I went from being uncomfortable and incapable of producing a large quantity of ice to being able to produce pounds of the stuff on demand...this isn't even draining and I know that you can do much worse and that I'm going to keep getting worse...aren't I?" He locked eyes with the elder man, it was a question but he already knew the answer and just didn't know if he was ready to accept it.

"Maybe your past didn't define you but I didn't decide to have these powers, and it isn't so easy when you're like..." Yukiin gestured to the ball as it stayed in the air before dispersing into snow, scattering in a burst that coated the camp area and caused the flames to crackle back angrily at the further introduction of liquid. "This. Every drop could be a weapon if I wanted it to be, how am I supposed to not be a weapon when that was I was breed to be before I had any say in the matter?"

He inhaled and pressed out a stream of steam, no longer having to retain a level of bare minimum warmth with the girl removed from his presence. Pushing out the warmth and allowing his body to settle down into the lower realms where a normal human would be dead brought him some satisfaction as he tried to return a smile for a smile, although it seemed both parties were equally terrible at the expression.

"It's Yukiin, by the way. Byakko, Yukiin. They call me Haku on the papers, I would assume thats my bloodline's distinction. Don't pull up my record though, my Genjutsu scores were atrocious."

Bored, Kei was so bored. She could feel her brain slowly leaking out of her ears from the lack of stimulation. Her comment and actions had been ignored, swept under the bed like a pair of old socks. Orange had at least designated her with a reply but it was an uninteresting one.

Coffee man was talking about something she did not understand nor care to understand. Though his words may be deep they had little impact upon her and she remained unmoved. It was not because she believed that the older man was wrong but simply the fact that she did not understand what they were talking about. She had no great loyalty to the village Brother had said they were a member of and she had no interest in living as a weapon. To her being a shinobi was something she did for Brother, entertainment and money. The twisted thinking the pair was alluding, making oneself into a weapon for the village to use, had never occurred to her. Trauma was also far from her range of understanding, especially trauma caused by doing a job. Thus she had zoned out halfway through his speech. Having no intention of returning her attention she slid on to the ground resting her head back against the log she was sitting on. Listing to the rise and fall of the voices around her she began to drift away.

It was easy for one such as herself to block out the noise of people around her and focus on other things. Her range expanded slowly as she began to lose focus on the the world around her. The taste of coffee mixed with the smell of fire, orange combined with spearmint and the sound of cracking ice. From the tent came the feeling of air brushing against the skin. Smaller things began to come into focus, the hunger of animals around her, the warmth of a fox caring for it’s kits. This all became clear to Kei as her world expanded into one few were ever able to witness.

To an observer it would appear as if she had fallen asleep but she was more aware than most of the world would ever be.

Looking at Kei being all relaxed and seemingly asleep, she felt like doing the same except that Shizuka preferred to have a blanket to curl in, so sleeping on the ground while sitting in the open air didn’t look like the perfect solution. A soft yawn escaped her lips, she tried to keep her attention on Shieo and Yuki, but somehow her mind was ending up enjoying the crackling of the fire more. So, when the ice play came into sight she had to shake off the relaxing sounds of the bonfire in order to follow the whining. At least that’s what it sounded like to her.

“Yes, I am.” She spoke with a fair share of pride. From the very start, she had been glad to be born into a family of Shinobi. The burdens and responsibilities they carried paled against the privileges they had. Knowing no other life but that inside of the village and having always felt quite good about it, she didn’t understand his struggle at all.

She would have probably stayed silent or went to bed, but the bits of snow flying her way pissed her off. Cold wasn’t something she was fond of, and certainly not when she was tired. That’s why the wall of wood came crashing down between them. Or rather, it came from the ground, a thin shield, because there was no need for anything truly massive, that defended her, and Kei, from the ‘hail’.

“Nobody of us ‘decided’ to have these powers,” she started out, slowly coming from behind the wooden wall with her hands loosely in her pockets. The green in her eyes was growing vicious at a rapid speed. There was only so much nonsense that she could take before having to react.

“everyone’s born unique, there is no need to complain about what you are, in fact, there is no use in sulking about what you have or don’t have. You just deal with it. Either you accept this power as a gift from fate itself, and use it well, or you should drop it entirely like Shieo-san was saying.” Shrugging, she kept her eyes on Yukiin. A part of her wanted to punch him in the face, hard. She could already feel the tingling in her fingers. It was an odd sensation. One she wasn’t used to because brawling wasn’t her thing.

“Whatever you decide, I hope you’ll get over it soon because right now you sound like a complete drama queen.”

Tilting her head to the side, she took a look at Kei. “Want to come with me and get a blanket?”

As Kei was relaxing she noticed another smell mix with the preexisting one. This one was coming over from the side of the younger girl. Someone who had remained relatively steady throughout the whole conversation. The girls orange scent was slowly turning bitter, not a pleasant smell. Slowly opening her ears to the world again she began to listen to what the other was spouting. Giggling, she listened to Orange fly off at the handel. Yuki was being a drama queen but after twenty five days of traveling with him Kei had gotten used to it. “Kei thinks Yuki needs to do some thinking,” she said calmly, for once “and reevaluate what he thinks of himself. Kei also thinks everyone else should get some sleep.” The sleep comment was directed at Orange. This was a surprising show of maturity that was unexpected given who it was coming from. She quickly ruined that by standing up and throwing herself at Yuki in a hug. Potentially knocking the both of them to the ground. “Night night Yuki!” she exclaimed as she got up. “Night night Coffee,” she added on. Brother had told her it was impolite to ignore people even if you didn’t care about them.

Going back over to Orange she tripped on a rock and almost fell into the fire. Kei caught herself just in time. It seemed like she was more tired than had originally believed. “Let’s go to sleep and let the grumpy old people continue talking if they want to.” The grumpy old people obviously referred to the two older males. “Orange where is your blanket?” She had no intention of being a part of the useless conversation any longer but not able to leave until Orange led her away.

I left my attention to settle on Yukiin while he went through his contention. A few moments had stirred my spine, but I left myself to keep quiet and let him vocalize his problems. Just let him talk Shieo-- There seem to be some rather seated issues; things he hasn't been able to voice outwards. It may be what he needs. so I kept my rested posture.

It wasn't much longer until Kei and Shizuka started to grow restless. And the fluttering of ice in remark to Yukiin's problems had seemed to be the last straw for Shizuka. With an eruption between crackling ice and the growth of wood. I could only stir a sigh in the momentary clash of wills and whim, having brought my right hand up to mantle my chin. Directing my gaze amongst the three while they conversed- If one could call it that. They debated rest, spat comments and otherwise witnessed a few moments of insecurity and frustration amongst them. All of them.

When Kei wished me good-night, I merely dipped my head in a nod. Acknowledging her intent of rest. And then looked to Yukiin.

"It's good you were able to speak about your frustrations." With a simple comment, I stood up and looked over the fire; it waned and crackled under the cold embrace of the boy. I felt that my expression and state of being equate to the fire- lethargic a bit. I knelt down and grabbed a hold of my leather bundle; otherwise my blanket. "Your companion is right though; it does sound as if you have a lot to consider. And I hope you understand." I turned and parted slowly towards my own tent. With my left-hand I angled it to show my palm, extending outwards and then in a moments notice. Clenched; and the fire erupted into a blaze, only to be snuffed out into darkness. "You really don't have to be a weapon, settle your infatuation; it's breaking you by the seams."

Angling the hand to reveal the innards of the tent. I disappeared into it's confines; leaving Yukiin to his own devices.

I wonder what he will conclude too... Too far-gone? That-- Ultimately, is up to him to decide. And perhaps those who he keeps around his company can help him improve... But only time will tell, and I'm tired.

"At the seams huh?..." Yukiin repeated, glancing down at his fingers as the residence of one hand unfolded and refolded. Like strings then...when he was in control of something was he commanding it or was his animating force the final part of holding something together? The distinction didn't really matter but it was certainly an interesting thought if he compared it to himself, without a guiding hand would he fall apart into a useless clump of matter the same as a puppet would? Would he become unraveled? Was he going to unravel regardless?...that seemed to be the accusation. If he didn't grab ahold of the hand above him then whether by his own resistance, as slow and passive as it was, or by the actions of that guiding hand he would perish.

And he would perish before he found her.

An unacceptable outcome, although it seemed a petty goal to be so invested in. The further he developed the more he wanted to know what he was like compared to others of his kind and kin, he needed to see her and determine if he was truly the rising monstrous star of his own impressions or if he was something 'normal' by his kindred's standards. The Senju had spat something at him, unkind but utterly uninvasive words that bounced off his skull with little consideration and even less recollection of it once she'd departed with the annoying one. It didn't matter, although her abilities were of some interest.

What she produced was organic, or at least it appeared to be, and she seemed to be as capable of conjuring up this force for trivial matters. The idea unnerved him, that other shinobi could control something living as easily as he controlled something inanimate. Didn't it resist? Or was it too stupid? Unlikely, she seemed pretty small of mind herself so the idea that she was commanding something smaller seemed impossible, but he supposed a plant was a very different kind of intelligence and that, as a human, she would grow into a more comprehensive mindset as she aged. Ideally not one that was reflective of his own and that seemed unlikely, she had been presumably raised with others of her kind and was accustomed to her abilities and their role in the village whereas Yukiin was more told what his abilities should develop into based on a paperwork classification and was kept seperate from most others.

He'd lost most of his Academy associates along the way anyways, Kugutsu training was long and tedious and he'd cycled through several years worth of students in that time...not to mention some of them weren't on speaking terms with him after what he'd done to them as part of the 'testing process'. These two were somehow outside of the normal system, three even, so perhaps this was the man's intention out here...to raise shinobi in a less destructive environment, or to test new methodologies. How kind.

The remaining shinobi rose to his feet.

"I'll return when and if my charge is ready to leave, I doubt you'll have trouble finding me at that point in time. I will attend to my own matters, privately, until then."

Yukiin extended a bow to the Chunnin before him and departed, pockets turning out his scrolls as he unfurled and extracted their contents, both of his icy puppets walking before and in front of him in their garb to gave this illusion of a larger party than one shinobi with his invisible strings guiding the pair of puppets to move in an entirely human fashion. He needed to dwell on things in his own way but that did not discount a need to be safe along the path.
