It was coming down to the wire. Using the momentary lapse in the action, the Mednin began to heal herself, smoothing cuts and lessening the degree of bruises with her right hand. Though physical damage was a concern, she was also running out of energy at a much steadier rate. From her judgement, she was down to a little less than a quarter of her reserves… which meant that this had to end, quickly. Hikaru put a bit of extra force into the medical technique, urging it to move faster. She hadn’t considered the invisible timer that all battles operated by- the cheering of the crowd and the rush of adrenaline had occupied her mind completely until just a few seconds ago.

She heard a familiar crescendo outside of the ring of fire, and a moment later the same wave ripped through its boundaries, narrowly missing her. As she leapt away, searching the arena, her opponent was once again nowhere to be found; of course. It was dangerous to be repeating the same sequences of actions, though- soon, one or both of them would be completely out of chakra.

Her eyes did latch onto the Nightmare that had been prowling around her shadows for so long. A decision had to be made: she abandoned her rigid focus on Daisuke, directing a widening funnel of blue energy directly at his creation. She didn’t expect it to hit him- if he ran into it, all the better for her, but it wasn’t likely- rather, the attack was meant to get rid of his backup. And sure enough, the beast fizzled from the pressure.

Hikaru slowed her movements, trying to conserve any resources she had left. She stood practically stationary, directing her shadows and managing the waves of heat that still exuded from her. From her vantage point, she caught sight of a blur in the air. If her opponent wanted to attack her, so be it- her physical state wasn’t much of a problem right now. And if her state was any indication, he couldn’t keep this up forever… the fight was nearing its end.

Daisuke could feel his breath coming slower, and his muscles ached with slight pain as moved throughout the arena. He did not think the battle would have gone this long, but thinking about it, it had barely been fifty seconds or so - they had not been fighting even a full minute, and it already felt like a battle of attrition to the lad.

Hikaru was a strong opponent - very strong, and he could see from his vantage that she, at least, was also feeling the hurt - though, it seemed her own attempts at self-healing were better than his own. They had to finish this battle one way or another.

And instantly, her opponent vanished again. This battle was pushing her to her absolute limit, but she could see a clear path to victory- as long as she stayed calm. Chakra coursed through her body once more, and this time the edges of her vision sharpened as if a fog was cleared. Though it wasn’t the most graceful strategy, her best option right now would be to continue taking up space around her with attacks just to prevent Daisuke from being there, in place of the rest of her shadows. Hikaru shot forwards and sent an open-palm strike through the empty air. She followed with an E-rank Wind release jutsu, aimed to limit movement towards the center of the arena.

It wasn’t enough. Four scything blows raked her back, perfectly in her blind spot- it felt like everywhere was her blind spot, in fact. Hikaru moved, but it was far too late to hit her opponent herself. Signaling her last remaining shadow, she knelt, beginning to gather chakra herself. With a lucky strike, her shadow’s kick connected with something… but Daisuke didn’t appear. She winced; of course he would have another trick to keep himself hidden. His ability in combat was on par with her own, clearly, since their fight had been moving practically as slow as a stalemate. But she was recognising one of her weaknesses in their exchanges- she had very little information about her opponent, and she couldn’t gather it fast enough either. Everything about his fighting style was designed to keep her in the dark, and it was working too well.

Hikaru put her hands on the ground, channeling the chakra she had been stockpiling into the earth. She hadn’t practiced this technique more than a few times, and she wasn’t sure it had worked, but she couldn’t dwell on it for too long. Sure enough, another gash appeared on her arm, followed by a blazing pain. Steadily, the Mednin stood again. Anger was blossoming in her chest, anger at her sheer ineptitude that seemed to be dragging her backwards into the ground with every step. She felt the pain from her wounds in every inch of her body, as if her adrenaline was burning. She almost expected the white fury that had burst from her sealed forehead to explode again, and she wouldn’t have minded if it did; the seal, however, hadn’t reacted at all during the entire battle.

Her shadow, ever loyal from years of bunshinjutsu practice, struck true a second time. Daisuke was visible again, and Hikaru let out a breath, trying to dampen her anger. She stretched her arms out towards him, palms open as they began to pulse with a blue glow. She didn’t want to demonstrate her skill with this technique just yet, but it was about time to start using it. Her eyes locked on her opponent, the thin blue vortexes started to swim towards him. Suddenly, though, a cloud of smoke surrounded him, and the Mednin recognized her shadow standing in his place at the last moment. She exchanged a look of understanding with the faceless half-replica of herself, and the jutsu connected, making her final creation go poof. It was, however, not the worst outcome in the world- those guys couldn’t feel pain, she was certain, and the technique had worked pretty much as intended. She pulled the charka of the shadow back towards her, using it to restore her own gradually emptying pool. Finally, she stared her opponent down, anger reduced to a dull burn. That clear path of action- if she wanted to take it, she would have to strike as quickly as she could.

One thing Hikaru had learned in her training as the Combat Division’s Medical Chief was that there existed an anatomy of many things- not only the human body, but also branch structure, mission procedure, and most importantly, battle itself. That had been the most difficult one for her to grasp. Yet, through hours of poring through dense collections of books, countless neck-and-neck spars with skilled Medical Ninja, she had learned what it meant to study the anatomy of a fight. As she faced the circle of grass outlined in flames, assessing her current state and searching for her opponent, she recognized where she and her opponent stood: this was the last hurdle, the make-or-break moment. They had fought evenly up until this point; now, the first to claim an advantage over the other would have everything they needed.

The Mednin gave a weighty sigh. She knew that this was all about her mental state- if it came down to it… she wouldn’t mind losing here. Daisuke was a skilled shinobi, and she had already learned so much about a style of fighting that she had never encountered before. The deepening pains in her back and her sides nagged her to lie down and not get up for several days, and if the next handful of seconds went a certain way, it was comforting to know that she’d be able to do just that. Losing wouldn’t be the end of the world- Hikaru accepted that.

And as soon as she spoke those words in her mind, a very simple path of logic followed. If she could afford to lose, she could afford to go all out without fear of losing. No fear: all she had to do was push through the next few seconds, and she would either win or be able to rest, simple as that. Even if she couldn’t see her opponent, she knew exactly what she had to do.

Daisuke knew he felt more tired than he was supposed to be, but he did not even realize it until it was far, far too late. He felt like a novice without good chakra control, squandering it until his supply was nearly depleted. He could still fight, but he knew that would not be the case for much longer - he was on the brink of chakra burn, and that would knock him out of the battle faster than Hikaru could.

He watched her from his perched vantage, a frown marring his once-relaxed features. The boy wondered how long she had set him up, and how - he had not even realized, and he could not remember what it was that got him. It may have been since the very beginning, which he had to grin about. Hikaru had surprised him at how ferocious she fought, but this took the cake. This was true skill. She had got him long since, and he had not even realized, and so could not respond.

"You're an extremely difficult opponent, Miyazaki Hikaru. I wouldn't mind losing my first round in this tournament to you - but it's not done yet. I will keep fighting until I have burned away every last piece of energy I have, and I hope you do the same. Well fought." His disembodied voice, Hikaru would hear from random places throughout the arena as he moved every few words. His body ached to move, and he breathed harder than he wanted, but it was coming down to the wire. This next round would be the determinant.

Having intentionally ignored the ring of fire, Daisuke hated how difficult it was to exit it. He knew he did not have the chakra to snuff it out, but the flames would not hurt too bad, if he did not take too many tries exiting. He had to shrug off the creation's attacks as he waded through the flames, until he was finally free to face Hikaru, who looked nearly as exhausted as he was. This battle had been a hybrid between attrition, and quickly racking up as many hits as possible, and the strain had obviously worn on both of them.

He ignored the poofs behind him as the creations attempted to exit, but failed and died to Hikaru's own ring. Not something he had planned, but something he was glad for, nonetheless. Once again, it was just the two of them on the field, and Daisuke looked at her for barely a second before he vanished again. He had to take down the barrier, and get her at the same time... She had to be low on chakra, what with the new barrier and healing herself.

Opting to remain in stealth, he tried a technique he had seen only Hikaru do before. The barrier flickered out in barely a second, and he felt a surge of new energy as he stole her chakra until there was nothing left. Slightly more renewed than he was only ten seconds ago, he sat for a second, before his voice could be heard around the arena as he kept moving despite the burning ache he felt all over his body.

"Miyazaki Hikaru, you've fought with honor. You were by no means an easy opponent, in any sense - but you are out of chakra, and I'm renewed." He stepped out of the shadows for a second, intentionally letting Hikaru see him as his eyes locked onto hers. "Concede defeat. You've got my respect, whatever you wanna do. But now we're getting into dangerous territory, 'cause we're low on chakra." He held out a hand, offering a handshake.

Hikaru dove through the flames, parting them like a curtain to pass safely. From behind her, she saw her opponent try the same thing and fail- he materialized again, meeting the ring of fire face-first for a little bit of damage. She grinned, leaving the area inside to her shadows, and put a bit of distance between her and Daisuke. Her energy was low, undoubtedly… but she wouldn’t let herself collapse yet. A sphere of glass sprung up around her that reflected the sunlight into azure patterns on the grass. Her opponent finally managed to leave the ring, it seemed, before he disappeared yet again, leaving the Mednin to shift her stance the slightest bit.

Behind her, she felt her creations run into the wall of flames one by one- she had miscalculated, which was fine. She’d know now for the future. Unfortunately, she could feel that she didn’t have enough chakra left to keep the Ring of Fire technique up, much less to make more shadows in their place. Hikaru breathed deeply, recovering more of her surface wounds with an almost unconscious Mystical Hand jutsu. He would have to do something soon… and sure enough, the same blue vortex ripped through her barrier, draining the very last of her chakra pool to be carried back to her opponent. She heaved, fighting to stay on her feet- and surprisingly, she won, just barely balancing on the soles of her shoes. She had never been completely out of chakra in her life, and somehow she could still move her body, albeit with considerable fatigue.

Daisuke spoke up, evidently having discerned her condition. She met his eyes. Her mind was racing, but she already knew the answer to his question before he finished- this pain was nothing compared to the steady weight of those that relied on her. “You have my respect as well, Daisuke. For the first Cloud shinobi I’ve met, you’re an experienced combatant and a formidable tactician. However- your opponent this time is a Medical Chief. I’ve come to trust my staff with my life, and as much as I hate to test it so soon, I’m more than confident that they can handle a fully depleted shinobi.” Her eyes flashed with a grin. “So say hi to them for me when you wake up!” The jab was undeserved, but she wanted to show her conviction in any way she could. Skillful as Yamada Daisuke was, he was most certainly not out of the woods yet.

Hikaru slipped through the ring of flames again, expecting her opponent to try to follow her. The heat was more than uncomfortable now… she needed to address her drained chakra reserves, as her absolute first priority. Widening the ring to ward off the now less-controllable fire, she made a handseal, motioning upwards as if lifting something out of the ground. Sure enough, a Mud clone rose, following the gesture- as it did, she felt a sharp pain right above the worst of her cuts. The ring hadn’t been disturbed, fortunately, even from any kind of outside entrance. Perhaps he was waiting back and gathering himself as well… in that case, he was much better equipped to do so, which put her at a disadvantage even just sitting here doing nothing. Distressed, she tested the arena for movement and found nothing. That confirmed it, she had to do something.

Hikaru faced her muddy duplicate, hoping very much that the idea she had in mind would work. Daisuke swapped places with one of her shadows before, causing her to hit it instead with the Energy Transfer technique… and she had regained a little bit of Chakra. Aiming a similar blue vortex, smaller this time, at her Mud clone, the Mednin wondered vaguely if she should concede after all. This method wasn’t enough to keep up with how much energy she’d need, by far, and she didn’t really want to pass out from complete enervation if she could help it. It truly didn’t sit well with her, though- she remembered what she had said to Kuru, back when she had gotten mad at the pair of Academy students in the forest. ‘There’s always a time and place to run away, but never when something important is on the line…’ she wasn’t sure if this tournament was important, in the long run. But it felt so important to her now. Whether it was better to quit now or not, she felt that she had to continue- it was taking too much time to think about it anyway.

Daisuke knew she was would be forced to play more passive more than usual, and he took full advantage. He let his body fall into a state of rest, which allowed all jutsu that he had focused on fall away until he felt his chakra surge with renewed vitality. It healed his body just as it gave him a new breath of energy and relieved a few of the aches and pains he had gathered during the fight. The boy could simply wait among the shadows, and that's what he did; he had put her at a constant state of uncertainty the entire battle thus far, and she was still there, evidenced by the fact that she continued to battle as he left her be to catch his own breath.

The Ring of Fire was still a largely annoying to Daisuke - it had forced him to exit the shadows once to deal with, and would likely force him to do so again. But that was fine - he banked on the fact that her options were limited, with her back against the wall like this. All he had to do was keep from stupid options himself, and he would be fine. The battle was almost over, and it was barely a minute and a half into it - he felt no rush to finish, but he did want to go and eat a bit of ramen, and sleep a heavy sleep.

He did not do much to remain hidden as the woman's punch whiffed by his head, which no doubt confirmed his presence for her. He gave a single nod of his head, before he lunged backward and allowed his chakra blade to dissipate as his hands flashed through a series of seals.

The pull from the Ring of Fire tightened her chakra pool further… it was almost completely dried up again. Hikaru wondered how much longer she could support her own weight, and inescapably she regretted her taunts from earlier. She had been in a rush to prove her worth, and had tarnished it instead… and here she was, acting all down on herself before the fight was even over yet. That said, its outcome was growing clearer with every passing second- she struck twice, blind punches with the least purpose she had been able to muster throughout the entire two minutes they had been inside the arena. With a brief flash of indignance, she tried the same concealment technique that her opponent had been plaguing her with, likely to little effect- and sure enough, the circle of fire hissed, giving way to a wall of water that slammed her and her Kawarimi target against the wall.

She could already hear muttering from the crowd… they had noticed her condition, no doubt. Her sides began to numb from exhaustion. She had no energy left to respond to the following strikes- having been barely able to dodge them at the beginning of the fight, she could do significantly less now. As the pain spread to where she could feel, the arena was almost silent for once… the Medical Chief looked down at the ground. All this work for what felt like nothing… she was sure it wasn’t, sure that she’d find some bright side to look on once this was all over. She trusted herself in that regard. Maybe she’d be recuperated enough to catch the finals, whenever they rolled around… she wondered who would be in them. She took a glance at the Medical corps stationed by the edge of the arena’s wall- her cousin gave her a half-smile as she pocketed one of Hikaru’s notepads, preparing the stretcher to pick her up with the others. She had asked her to take notes on the fight… well, she could count on Teru to be honest, at least.

As for the remainder of the battle itself, Hikaru’s mind was blank. Whatever happened, happened- if Daisuke wanted to taunt her, she’d have a better chance of making a comeback, but otherwise he didn’t have to do much. The sun shone onto the grass, brightening her already pale skin… the question now was whether she wanted to wake up in time for the finals or sleep for the rest of the month.

Daisuke could feel the shift in the battle, and the subsequent shift in the crowd. Where once it had been a tight race, his much needed and hidden breather had proved to be the game-changer that he needed. The battle was all but over - but she was still standing, and her ring of fire was still proving annoying, even to her.

A quick dissipation of his chakra blades and a few handseals later, he spewed a wave of water from his lips, riding it towards the ring. He kept his final seal, watching the woman closely as the fire hissed away and his second wave slammed into her kawarimi target. A few seals later, and an arm of water lashed out at her, striking true.

He didn't return to stealth. No, instead he simply brought his blades back into his hands and spun at her, striking a few more times in quick succession. He backed away slightly, until there was about five yards between them. They both looked to be at the end of their ropes, but it was obvious Daisuke fared better than the Medical Chief.

He said nothing, just watched and waited. He was not going to finish this battle with a dagger into her back - she had earned that much, and more. It was only the first battle, and he had been pushed to his utmost and for that, he would thank her later. But it was not later, and so he launched himself forward in a whirling spin of black and white.

At least she could look her opponent in the face. Hikaru used the opportunity to punch him squarely in the chest, putting all of her disappointment and frustration with herself into the cathartic motion. Her chances were slim, undoubtedly- trying the same concealment technique once more, the young woman leapt backwards and knelt, trying to rest while she could. She gazed down at the grass underfoot; some parts bore singe marks, while others were torn in a circle of wind. If she made it out of this fight victorious, somehow, she resolved to pay attention to how the grass was restored after each match- perhaps she could learn the method to help with botanical studies back at the Byoin. On that subject, she should stop by later today to pick up a handful of books from her office…

Teru watched the final blow from beside the wall of the arena. The boy swung, meeting his opponent in two powerful strikes followed by a flurry of similar attacks- her cousin was out cold after the first couple, she could tell. Well, that was it. The team hurried onto the grass once they were allowed, lifting Hikaru onto the stretcher and beginning to make their way to the temporary first aid station that had been set up for the tournament. She gave the Cloud Shinobi a nod as they passed- she envied the Medical Chief, much as she wouldn’t admit it, especially now that she had gotten to experience a level of foreign combat first-hand. Maybe not just yet, though… she had more than a few nasty, painful-looking cuts at the moment. To the Byoin it was...
