Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

"Tch..."

The lateral click echoed off the chiseled onyx walls of the Torre as Rei made her way down its halls. Eyes cast to the dossier she'd retrieved from her pouch to show the receptionist, she couldn't hide her distaste for the image that looked back at her. It had been a rushed job between assignments, since her photo expired while she was away and she had a less than 24-hour turn around between missions. She hadn't even had the chance to change into clean attire or shower, and having just returned from the edges of Wind Country it left her looking like quite the wild woman. Granted, it wasn't as if she ever looked all that professional anymore to begin with. Though she currently wore more formal attire to match the office of her meeting, it was still military in style and combat-ready in keeping with the short crop of her hair to avoid having to pin it back lest it become a liability to her effectiveness. Monster hunting wasn't exactly the sort of profession that loaned itself to formalities or cleanliness. Occasionally in the past she would wonder how she might be different had she continued down the path of diplomacy as she once intended, but even those musings had become a thing of the past.

Approaching her destination, the clomping of her boots came to a pause as she took a breath to ready herself. In all this time she had not met the new Raikage, nor did she know too much about her. There had been intermittent gossip around the fire from her Kaibutsu Hunter counterparts, but it seemed those conversations were often cut short by those more in-the-know. Nor did Rei particularly care to be in the know - she had enough to worry about as it were, and if her former life in Konoha had taught her anything it was that involvement in leadership was lonely and sad. Now if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black.

Having rehearsed what she could anticipate of the conversation of ahead of her and gripping her small folder of documents at her side, the kunoichi put on a small smile and approached the Raikage's secretary, extending her dossier out with a bow. "Nanjirou Rei. I have a scheduled meeting with Lord--" she stumbled, thankful to have this realization with the secretary and not the Juuichidaime themselves, "--Madam? Raikage." The secretary gave her a sympathetic smile, which only intensified upon investigating her dossier. "I'll let her know you're here. Feel free to have a seat while you wait," the woman's soft voice calmed Rei as she returned her documentation. "I'll stand, thank you." Removing herself to the benches, Rei flipped open her folder and reviewed its contents once more while she waited.

Another day, another pile of papers to handle. Such was the life of the top brass. For once however, Kitsune was well ahead of her daily workload and even had time to take regular breaks. Currently she was going over the budgets for the branches, ensuring they had the funds they required, without asking for more than they actually required. After collating the various papers into piles, Kitsune got out of her chair and stretched, only to be interrupted by her secretary saying that a Nanjirou Rei was here to see her. Kitsune ran through her calendar and didn’t see an appointment, but then shrugged and asked to have them shown in.

She sat back down and once Rei had entered the room, Kitsune’d gesture towards one of the chairs across from her desk ”Please. Have a seat.” she said with a smile. ”So what can I do for you, this fine day?” she proceeded to ask the woman, wondering just why Rei had come there. She remembered that Rei was part of the main branch, and the monster hunting division if memory served right, but it had been a while since the rosters had last been gone over, so she wasn’t exactly sure on that front.

"She'll see you now."

Not long ago, the click of the door leading into the office of the single most powerful person in the village would have left the girl second guessing her every move and word. She had visited this particular office so few times that memories of her first arrival couldn't help but play like an old, broken recording at the edge of her consciousness. She remembered how she'd felt so small in this big, impressive tower, but she'd gathered strength to make her bold request for citizenship from those who stood beside her. So far removed was she from that reality now that it was almost difficult to believe that had really happened in this lifetime of hers, just about a decade ago.

Greeting Kitsune with a deep bow of respect upon entering the office, she'd would follow by quietly taking a seat across from the Raikage at her instruction. Taking in Kitsune's appearance, she was surprised - wasn't this Kogami-sama's mother-in-law? Even Rei, who had to be at least fifteen years younger than Lord Tenth, was creeping up on looking older than the red-haired woman before her. Whether it was ninja-magic or the comforts afforded by working in the medical field she was unsure, but already it appeared her assumptions about this Eleventh Raikage were being challenged. Yet she was confident in the proposal she had prepared, and so when Kitsune asked for her reason for their appointment, Rei began - calm, cool and collected.

"Raikage-sama, thank you for meeting with me. I understand the demands on your time are high, so I don't intend to waste it and, with permission, will get right to the point."

Absent was the once flowery nature of her diplomatic approach. Instead, assuming Kitsune approved, Rei would hand over her dossier along with the folder of documents she'd prepared for the Raikage's perusal. Among them would be a timeline of Kaibutsu activity in lightning country, an assessment of the Kaibutsu's threat level and abilities, and a map recording their travel patterns.

"It's been nine years since the Kaibutsu attacked our gates. While our division has made strides in discovering more about their nature and how to combat them more effectively, we have continually hit one wall after another in our attempts to locate their new stronghold or leaders." The Chuunin paused to allow the Raikage more time to examine the documentation of these exploits. Upon their conception as a response to King Maji's attack on the village, the division had enjoyed great favor from within the village. However, as time passed the belief grew that slaying Maji had been enough, that the kaibutsu were no longer a threat and the division outdated. Financial support had dwindled, and the number of new recruits had reached record lows as graduating academy students were now too young to remember the gate incident. Yet their favor remained high within the larger Lightning Country, where disappearances and kaibutsu attacks were still common. The information they had been able to compile out there pointed to one thing:

"They have recovered, and they are growing. It won't be long before Kumo is faced with a greater threat than before. The assault nine years ago had been the blind aggression of a single kaibutsu. This time, they will be organized." As she spoke, she would gauge the Raikage's reaction. So silent had their new leadership been on the activities of her division that Rei was uncertain where Kitsune fell on the spectrum of belief regarding the threat the kaibutsu posed. Praying she did not fall on deaf ears, she got into the meat of her reason for being here: the proposal.

"As you can see, all of our dead ends within the last year lie in Wind Country - beyond our jurisdiction, and in the opposite of their usual activity closer to Marsh Country, where the supposed River Court Kingdom is alleged to reside. There's not been any evidence to support a migration of their kind, but their increased activity in the southwest leads us to believe that these parasites are gathering strength from the foreign creatures of Wind Country. Our knowledge of their bestiary is limited, of course, as is much of our information on Sunagakure's activity." This was of course referencing the sand storm that had kept the Hidden Sand village underground and isolated for three decades. Having just ended within Rei's lifetime, Suna had yet to reestablish relations with the other shinobi villages, leaving much of Wind Country a mystery except to those who dared traverse the unforgiving desert. "There are, however, rumors along the border of a division known as 'Rangers'. They're spoken of more as folklore than a real entity, but their history is lengthy and the purpose, at least at one time, was to deal with monsters of various kinds. We believe, if rumors hold true, their expertise may be the key to snuffing out this particular enemy."

"I'm requesting an extended travel leave to Sunagakure with the purpose of establishing a more open hunting border and exchange of information regarding the Kaibutsu, and to inquire about the existence of Sunagakurian 'Rangers' that might be able to aide us in gathering information. Now, the reason I needed to bring this request to you specifically and not just the passport office, Raikage-sama, is because upon confirming the existence and function of these 'Rangers', we would like to immediately begin negotiations of official cooperation and correspondence between our divisions. A small alliance of sorts, if you will, assuming my investigation turns out the following criteria. The Master of the Hunt has approved my proposal on the condition that you would find it acceptable, Raikage-sama."
Lastly and finally, she would hand over a final document, complete with the Master of the Hunt's seal:

Conditions of a Kumo-Suna Hunting Entente said:
Upon confirmation of…
  • The existence and active function of a monster hunting division or its equivalent in Sunagakure no Sato;
  • Wherein such an organization can provide documentation on a non-human, intelligent threat along the border of Wind and Lightning countries;
  • Wherein such an organization proves itself willing and capable of cooperation with a foreign entity:

It is proposed that…
  • A Hunting Entente is established between the two villages, Kumogakure no Sato and Sunagakure no Sato;
  • Wherein members of the organizations within their respective villages will be given rights to track their targets 100km into the borders of the other's country until the mission is taken over by or joined by a member or team of the local village's organization;
  • Wherein information as it pertains to the abilities, whereabouts and plans of the kaibutsu, hanyou and symbiotes is shared freely across divisions except that which is deemed classifiable by the village Kage for purposes of the security of the proprietary village;
  • Wherein aide may be called upon by either village division to the other for specific missions, emergencies or attacks, and expect that aide will be given;
  • Wherein any act of aggression, misinformation, or litigation perpetuated by any member of either village division against the other is grounds for termination of the entente;
  • Wherein this agreement may be terminated either by the Kazekage or Raikage at any time, with advanced notice and reasoning:

In order to…
  • Promote the safety of shinobi villagers and non-shinobi civilians within Wind and Lightning Countries;
  • Mutually benefit from the investigative research on intelligent non-human enemies in varying environments to increase rates of mission success;
  • and expedite the end of the common threat of intelligent non-human enemies.

Once more, she would respectfully pause to allow Kitsune the opportunity to consider the document and ask any questions. It was a lot, yes, but enough time had been wasted. Anticipating at least one of the Kage's concerns, after a moment of silence she would add this: "I understand my ranking as a Chuunin doesn't hold much weight in foreign diplomacy, but seeing as the Master of the Hunt is currently on a leave of absence, I trust that my ranking as a Godslayer, second only to his position as head of our division, that I might be sufficient to make this sort of division-level agreement."

In truth, the ailing health of the Master of the Hunt had long left many suspected his inevitable retirement. She suspected one of the Tría would take his place if that were to happen; given her own disinterest in climbing ranks as well as Kumo's skepticism of foreigners in places of leadership, she doubted she would ever see herself make Jounin, much less division head. This was fine with her, as if all went well with this meeting and then the alliance itself, she had other plans in mind for her own future - of course, those plans were much too bold and presumptuous to raise with the Raikage today. A triumphal return from this mission, she hoped, would give her the bargaining power necessary to see her future requests to fruition.

She had said her piece, and would again answer any questions or concerns the Raikage might have. She could only see this as a positive thing - a small step toward a possible greater alliance between the two villages if all went well. Word had spread that Sunagakure was slowly coming out of the isolation the sandstorm had forced them into, and Rei anticipated the Raikage would be keenly aware of the advantages something like this could afford her and her village.

Kitsune nodded at the intent Rei was showing to getting to the point, rather than waxing poetic about, well, everything. When she then talked about the attack on the gates by the big monsters, Kitsune had a slight smirk ”Yes, I remember, I was there. Fighting against it alongside everyone else.” she stated simply. It wasn’t a secret that she’d been there, but most people probably didn’t notice because her attacks hadn’t been flashy ninjutsu, but instead sneaky genjutsu. Kitsune listened to what Rei had to say while perusing the dossier that had been handed to her, committing the data to memory as she viewed it.

When Rei then stated that Kumogakure didn’t have much information on Wind Countrys activities, or rather, Sunagakures activities, Kitsune looked up ”I’ve got a private trade route going to Sunagakure. I export materials and goods from my provinces to them, in exchange for goods and materials from them. It’s an old deal I set up with the Steward-Kazekage, back when there was one such.” she stated as if that should be public knowledge at this point ”You should go seek out the trade caravan. I’m sure the traders could tell you a thing or two about the lay of the land there.”

Afterwards, Rei requested an extended travel leave to go to Sunagakure, and Kitsune didn’t really see any issue with allowing this. A document was handed over, with the seal of the Master of the Hunt on it. ”Well then. If he trusts you on this enough to give a seal, I’ll agree to it.” Kitsune said, knowing that having good people in key positions was vital for proper governance. She added her own seal to the document, making it an official decree. ”But you’re right about the ranking of Chuunin. We can’t have that... So, as such, I’m promoting you to Jounin. You’ll be Kumogakures eyes and ears in Sunagakure, and you’ll be our sword and shield against the monsters. Well. Continue to be, really.”

Seeing as the bulk of their work took place beyond the Dragon Tooth Pass, the Kaibutsu Hunters would often cross paths with various travelers and caravans. This included, on occasion, one such a trade caravan as the one the Raikage described. Usually these civilian traders were accompanied by an Infantry escort, and the information they were quick to offer was not quite what her division had been looking for. Still, Rei made sure to quickly note on a pad of paper Kitsune's suggestion given that she had never travelled through Wind Country herself. A few tips on supplies to bring and routes to take or avoid were certainly welcome. Though she planned to fly most of the way there, she was aware that the hot, oppressive desert winds might now allow for such a mode of transportation at this time of year.

In spite of the amount of information she'd had to lay out to give context for the request, Rei had done her best to be succinct; and so it would seem that Kitsune would follow suit. The Raikage seemed to have little to add and no contention with the terms their division had drawn up; it was any government worker's dream, though unusual and slightly unnerving. Surely there was some catch…

”But you’re right about the ranking of Chuunin. We can’t have that…"

Ah, Rei had anticipated this. Division ranks didn't always translate well in other village structures - she knew Konohagakure certainly wouldn't take the word of a Chuunin in a negotiation of this scale. If the Tría weren't currently on an extended assignment at the Marsh border, Rei was certain that she would have been paired with Oguri-san to give their envoy the weight of his rank. Just before she had the chance to begin worrying about how this might delay their plans or involve parties less privy to their methods or goals, Kitsune finished:

"So, as such, I’m promoting you to Jounin. You’ll be Kumogakures eyes and ears in Sunagakure, and you’ll be our sword and shield against the monsters. Well. Continue to be, really.”

Oh. Well that was unexpected. A few moments would pass, perhaps uncomfortably for Kitsune, as the Nanjirou's brain seemed to compute what her Kage had just said. As previously mentioned, Rei had some time ago resigned herself to the fact that she would likely be a forever-Chuunin as long as she remained in Kumo. She'd been a Jounin once before in Konoha, but this not by merit or skill - she'd been a child at the time, no more than fourteen years old. It had in truth been a bureaucratic promotion intended by one party to keep peace and by another to simply survive another day.

Perhaps that experience had jaded her too much, but even this moment which was in part exciting, still came with its own stressors and concerns. She had plans of her own following this mission, and she could not decide quickly enough if this unexpected turn of events would prove helpful or hurtful to that end. Realizing that she had paused for too long and that she had not been able to work through the best scenario fast enough, Rei took the logical approach that this could only be a good thing, especially for the task at hand.

"Thank you, Raikage-sama. Kumogakure has done great service to me, and I intend to repay that service. I'm deeply honored to be entrusted with the opportunity to do so in more significant ways than scrubbing the colosseum with a toothbrush." Rei smiled, and though she joked about some of her earliest assignments upon being integrated into Kumo's ranks, the truth was that she did miss those days, as well as the woman who'd assigned her to them.

Getting her brain back together, Rei considered what else was left to discuss. Not much, in all honesty; Kitsune had been more than agreeable, none of her additional talking points to persuade her on the importance of this mission seemed necessary. Maybe all she needed to do was present their budget requests in person next time to get the bottom line they were looking for.

"Our division would like to see this done expediently, so now that I have your approval I intend to make my way there within the next 48 hours. Unless you have a preferred method of communication, any information or advancements in relations will be sent by a certain Mochueleon I have a contract agreement with. Unless the Sirocco has flared already, he should be able to travel between the villages at least a full day faster than a messenger nin would be able to."

Pausing, Rei pursed her lips for a moment before decidedly folding her hands in her lap. "In truth, this was easier than I expected, and I did do my best to be thorough as well as succinct, so I believe that's all we had for you. Is there anything additional your office would like to see out of this mission, or anything you don't believe we've covered, Raikage-sama?"

Ball's in Kitsune's court. If she has more to discuss then I'm all for it! If not, Rei will take her leave from the office once instructed and I'll consider this a [topic left] post.
