A small smirk crossed Asuchi's lips as the woman asked her question. He even had an answer all prepared!

“It all started when a group of ninja set themselves on fire for no reason. Then a naked man cut off his own junk and grew red hair all over his chest. Then the three ninja who had somehow survived their third degree burns decided to take part in the Olympics, forcing Pepsi to redesign their company logo. This caused the naked man to shave his chest and get a tattoo. And that is how we discovered chakra.”

Well... Kahako beat him to it. She gave a simple, basic answer, but it would be adequate for what they needed to know right now. If they had further questions, they could ask later. And hers was an actual answer, not an obscure reference. Perhaps he'd get his moment to shine later.

He noticed the messenger dog on the outskirts of their group. The Kumo insignia gave it away as one of their own. No doubt there for them to report back what they'd learned. He felt its arrival a bit premature, however. They had just gotten here; they hadn't learned much of anything yet, only this sudden abundance of chakra. Much more info was needed before they could report back anything of use. At least an idea of what caused this, as well as what exactly happened here. The initial intel provided to them was definitely lackluster. Asuchi hoped for his branch's sake that it was the army that did most of the gathering, and none of the Intelligence Service.

Kahako was pursuing the medical angle, and Ayumu was questioning the woman about their chakra. Both solid leads, both necessary to any further info to be gained from this mission. It would do no good for him to add his own questions on either of the subjects. He was outclassed on the medical end; he knew anatomy and that was it, nothing compared to a mednin. And there weren't really any more questions to be asked about the chakra, at least not that he could think of. They needed to know when the villagers received such power before they could focus their questioning in more. Asuchi mulled over the situation in his head for a second. What did they really need to know? He decided to start simple. After all, it was an obvious question but one that for some reason hadn't been asked yet.

”You mentioned 'it', an 'incident' and 'judgement'. Are you referring simply to the deaths or did something happen to cause them?”

Asuchi nodded solemnly at the woman's last words. She truly looked devastated now, all pretenses of strength deserted her. She was scared, just like everyone else in the village. He gave her a reassuring smile before turning around to his team. They needed to get going on helping these people out.

”Well, I think we should start figuring this situation out. It seems that the villagers haven't noticed anything odd to cause the deaths or the increase in chakra. We need to see if there's any evidence of what happened. Obviously something kept these villagers alive, something that the others lacked. Whether it was an internal or an external factor is as of yet unknown.” He left out his thought that time was a valid external factor. It was currently an unfounded theory, and a macabre one that was likely to frighten the villagers, but it was worth keeping in mind. Whatever killed the dead ones could be working on the live ones as they spoke. He continued, ”I think we need to start inspecting the living, and if possible the dead. That's probably our best lead right now. Kahako and Keiji, obviously you two are suited for that job. Ayumu and I can talk to the other villagers. See if they noticed something useful. Or possibly look for physical evidence of what happened around the town.” He looked around at their team, and then shrugged. ”Or you know, some other plan. I dunno, I'm not the leader here.”

He turned back around and faced the woman once again. ”I do have another question, though. Over what time period did this all happen? Did your friends and family fall at once, or was it spread out over days, weeks? And how long ago was it?” He had no idea where these questions might lead, but Asuchi subscribed to the school of thought that there were no bad questions; you may stumble upon a clue you otherwise would not have. Or, more likely, you wasted your time. But he was willing to take that chance. As of yet, time wasn't valuable.

Asuchi strolled through the aisles of the shop. His new home, while small and cozy, was rather bare at the moment, and he needed some decoration to give the place some flair, some culture. Picking up a ceramic figurine of a frog, the shinobi sighed. This place was filled with a bunch of cool little decorations, but most of them were just weird. Who wanted a frog statue anyway?

The shinobi felt a small rumbling beneath his feet. He cocked his head and listened. Before too long the rumbling grew, and he heard something resembling an explosion from the alleyways outside. He threw the statue back on the shelf, cracking it a bit, and sprinted toward the exit. The rumbling shook the shelves, sending shards of porcelain flying everywhere as the figurines fell and shattered. Asuchi grabbed some yen from his pocket and threw it on the counter on his way out. A kind, although useless gesture. He had left enough for the one he damaged, and possibly one or two others. However, the man’s whole inventory had nearly been wiped out. Poor old thing…

Asuchi had no time to console him, however, as his duty was first and foremost to Kumogakure as a whole, and it appeared that she was under attack. He flung the doorway open just in time to catch a glimpse of blue hair as 47 stepped into an alleyway. It was just enough to put images from his last mission into his head; it had to be the same person. He watched as one shinobi literally flew after her, a couple more chasing on the rooftops and one more joining from the skies. Well, our quick response team sure seems to be on the case, he thought, picking up his pace once more. He ducked into the alleyway after her, chasing her on the ground since they seemed to have the skies covered.

He’d lived his entire life in Kumogakure, and she was a visitor. He felt relatively confident in his ability to outmaneuver her in the alleyways of his home, however, she could possibly lose him in the twisting labyrinth. He pressed onward.

The craftsmanship of many of Kumogakure’s architects was a blur as Asuchi’s feet slid swiftly and gracefully across the pavement. He suddenly heard the shriek of grinding metal and assumed 47 was putting together some sort of trap. With the knowledge that a full squad of fellow Kumo shinobi were up above him, he felt confident. Should he fall victim to a trap, the others could continue the pursuit while he got himself out of it. Asuchi didn’t plan on getting caught, however. After all, evasion was his specialty. As he approached yet another corner, his hand floated out beside him, tracing lightly on the wall next to him. When he reached the corner, said hand latched upon the wall, transferring his momentum into an arc as he pivoted, letting him clear the turn and be ready for action.

He expected to find 47 ready to launch another volley of projectiles at him. What he found instead was a man in the middle of the alleyway, facing away from him. A shout from one of the ninja above him revealed 47 limping away toward an intersection. Asuchi mentally reconciled this new predicament with his previous assumptions. The man must have been the source of the metal sound, and it appeared it was indeed a trap, only for 47 and not Asuchi. The fugitive appeared to be bloody, and her rather scant clothing was shredded. Whatever had happened and hit her HARD. The man was obviously powerful, perhaps even a shinobi. Even so, the pressing matter of apprehending 47 meant that this new development would have to wait until later. Asuchi didn’t even have any proof that he was the source of whatever took out 47, just an assumption.

He once again surged forward, dodging past the man and after the blue haired woman. The buildings on either side of the alleyway prevented him from seeing either Shashu or Hebi, and so from Asuchi’s point of view a strange thing happened. When he was still a few yards away from his target, she got yanked suddenly out of sight, as if by an invisible force. Then, a split second later, a net hit the ground right where 47 was previously hobbling. Asuchi wasted no time, bounding over the net and finding himself out in the middle of the street. The chuunin spun around twice quickly in succession, looking desperately for any sign of blue hair. He found nothing.

”Wha- what just happened?”

It seemed for the time being that the chase was over, so Asuchi allowed his muscles to relax, although his mind was still on alert. He let out a sigh as the man he passed earlier spoke to him. He mentioned the rarity of time-space jutsu, and suggested that was how she vanished. Unbeknownst to him, however, Asuchi was one of those rare shinobi that was quite skilled in time-space techniques, and he did not agree with the unknown man’s assessment. It appeared to him that she moved not of her own will.

He scanned the man up and down, as the foreign shinobi’s surprisingly golden eyes did the same to him. Mizukage? Well, former Mizukage…, Asuchi thought, seeing the man in a new light. Hoshikata, as he was called, was obviously powerful, and he had confirmed that he was the source of the jutsu that disabled 47. The cloud nin’s features broke out into a diplomatic smile, “Morikou Asuchi, Kumo Chuunin. Thank you for your help with the chase.”

Asuchi kept his eyes on the other ninja as he turned to look around, which turned out to be a mistake. He heard the man’s voice an instant before his eyes suddenly failed him, and reflexively threw up his left hand to shield them, as if that would do any good. With some left over adrenaline still in his system from the chase, he subconsciously began to charge his right hand with energy, ready to fend off whatever attack may come his way.

Quickly, however, the light faded and Hoshikata was apologizing for hurting his eyes as he announced that the area was free from genjutsu. The energy in Asuchi’s hand faded with the light, and he glared toward the man who blinded him, not hostile, but definitely annoyed. ”Some warning next time would be nice,” he muttered.

”I don’t know the woman’s name. She goes by 47. I… don’t have that much more on her, really. My only source unfortunately got his brain fried by one of our ANBU. She tried to ambush us on a mission not too long ago in Fire Country. Said ANBU took out her entire team, while I saved one guy to interrogate. And during the interrogation… well… it didn’t end well.” Asuchi was still rather upset by what happened to Jeffrey. He just hoped the man was doing okay, wherever he was. “What in the blazes she’s doing here, I have no idea,” he finished.

Asuchi was silently thankful as Ayumu dropped down nimbly next to him, flanked by a squad of ANBU who had appeared to help them apprehend 47. Asuchi was no stranger to command; as a chuunin, he was required to possess the skills and aptitude to lead others into battle. And he had before, and not completely terribly! But that still didn’t mean he enjoyed it. He would much rather be the second in command, the one giving advice and handling logistics, rather than making executive decisions. When Ayumu showed up, he was outranked and therefore no longer responsible for formulating their battle plan, which was just fine by him. Besides, with the reinforcements they could afford to have an actual plan, rather than just sit and wait for something to happen.

His plan made it through relatively unscathed however, with only some reinforcements in the back and an infiltration team added. Asuchi pursed his lips and raised his eyebrows, a surprised, ”Hmm” escaping his lips. Absolutely contrary to the rest of his personality of letting things unfold as they occur, and never worrying about much at all, he had a tendency to second guess his own decisions. Not that he feared making the wrong one, just wondering what the other paths would hold. Ayumu, a man whose command Asuchi trusted, seemed to agree with his assessment of the situation and his planned actions. It was a nice little feeling, to have your actions supported by your superiors. He glanced up at the man whose command he had the pleasure of being under for the second time now. Ayumu managed to instantly take stock of the situation, giving orders yet leaving his subordinates enough room for improvisation should they need to take it. Asuchi made some mental notes. He would be thrust into a leadership position sooner or later as he got older, assuming he didn’t meet an untimely demise out on a mission of some sort. He better learn how to lead well before that happened.

Asuchi tried not to take sides in arguments that didn’t concern him, but he couldn’t help but empathize with the academy student next to him. Attacked by her teammate, and then lectured for being angry she was attacked? That kinda sucked. Asuchi began to turn to talk to her, but noticed her stepping into the shadows and readying herself for possible combat. A smirk crossed his face. He probably should be doing the same.

Pushing his chakra down into the balls of his feet, the shinobi flipped upward and backward, landing on a wall running alongside the edge of the street and crouching down, his hands steadying himself. He kept his eyes trained on the building, looking for any sign of 47 trying to escape. She wouldn’t get far.

After a short amount of time, Ayumu came down toward the window where Hex entered, shouting that they were still searching inside for her, before he entered the building himself. Asuchi had been told to hold his position by the higher ranking shinobi, but it definitely appeared that inside the building was where the fun was happening. He moved closer to the window, seeking a better vantage point to see inside.

When he gained one, Asuchi sighed and shook his head. Oh yes, it appeared that something fun was definitely happening inside the building. The whole situation struck him as odd, however. He couldn't help but think that if most people were interrupted during an intimate moment, they would stop and cover up. Not these two however. They seemed to possess no shame.

There wasn't much to do at the moment, until they found something inside or declared the building clear. Asuchi planned to maintain his sentry outside of the window, glancing left and right every once in a while to make sure she didn't manage to escape out one side or the other. He felt he would hold an advantage if she could not see him, so he stepped back under some cover, which blocked most of his body from view. A small amount of purplish energy, somewhat resembling chakra, crackled between his fingertips on each hand. He was ready for some action.

...Not the kind of action that was going on inside, however. Let's just make that clear.

The ANBU captain who Ayumu called in for backup appeared up on the rooftop to take his place, and subsequently a clone of his appeared, jumping down to land near the academy student and himself.

"Everything clear on this side? The room is being searched,"

”Nothing so far. I'll make a ruckus if something happens, don't worry.” The waiting was the most boring part. You just had to sit there, doing nothing. Imagine how difficult it would be to describe just how little you were doing: watching, waiting, not moving. What's worse is if you had some sort of length requirement to what you were writing, that would be even more difficult. There's only so many ways you can describe standing still.

Thankfully the ANBU captain asked a question to break the monotony. It was much appreciated.

"You two helped corner her here? You seem to have good instincts... you should join the ANBU, both of you. We could use some more good shinobi, now more than ever,"

Asuchi hesitated. He had made his choice long ago. His father was a decorated ANBU, his mother a senior mednin. He'd chosen the comedy third option, although from the missions he'd been sent on as part of the Intelligence service his job was anything but funny. His father had been disappointed in Asuchi's unwillingness to follow in his footsteps, but he was determined to forge his own path. Now, it seemed, that path was heading back around to the other road he had avoided in the first place.

He'd heard the rumors of the branch, of course. He was an intelligence shinobi, he knew quite a bit. The ANBU had been shortstaffed lately, recruits weren't coming in at the rate they used to. He had even heard you could skip your training phase, assuming you had significant prior shinobi experience in another branch. It was too early to decide for sure, but perhaps ANBU was in his future after all...

He glanced at the academy student, who was at the same point in time he was long ago when he first made his decision. What would she say?

Looking back over toward the captain, he let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. ”After this is over I'd like to talk to the sennin, or one of the captains like yourself, if that's okay. I'm quite fond of the intelligence service but if you do need more shinobi, well, I can't say no to my village.”

"Think on it... and if you decide you are interested, see the ANBU Commander in his office at the Torre Celeste. He'll be expecting you," the captain responded to Asuchi's request.

"I'll stop by as soon as I'm able," he smiled in return. This new development in his career should be interesting.

He turned back toward the window, unwilling to let the terrorist escape due to negligence of the sentries. His vigilance was rewarded when the blue haired woman came careening down from the window she entered, landing gracefully and immediately moving toward her weapons. The Kumogakure immediately gave chase once more. Well, it looks like we're back to this again. It was such fun the first time...

She quickly reached the barrier where she was expected to stop, dumbfounded. However, this little vixen was quite crafty. Asuchi gained ground as she slowed to grab something out of a bag, but as he was about to catch her, she used some device to weaken the barrier, and then brute forced her way through, sealing it back behind her.

Hmm, a shinobi. I suppose I should have guessed with how skilled she seems to be, but she had stuck to basic weaponry before. This is the first time I've seen her use chakra.

Asuchi gave mental shrug. If she could punch through the barrier, he supposed he would be able to as well. He aimed for the barrier she erected, reasoning that a barrier made by one would be weaker than one made by three. His hands began to glow purplish blue, a barely present high pitched whine manifested from nothingness to accompany his gathered energy. He scarcely slowed, giving a quick jump, skip and a hop as he somersaulted forward, concentrating the energy from his hands down to his heels. As he reached the barrier, his heels, powered by his signature combination of blue chakra and some other purple energy, slammed downward, tearing a jagged hole through the barrier she had used to seal off her escape route. His foot completed its arc, landing back on the ground perfectly in stride. Just as he made it past the barrier, he saw her turn a corner up ahead. Deciding to take the short route, Asuchi renewed the chakra in his legs, leaping up to the top of the building alongside them and running up to the aforementioned corner. He gazed down upon a crowd of people, none of which possessed her signature blue locks. A frown crossed the shinobi's face. He was sure he saw her round this corner.

I need some frickin' tracking jutsu...

Asuchi sensed the ANBU Captain approach his side without having to turn his head. They both stared in futility at the crowd of people. She was obviously gone. They’d have to get her another day. He sighed as he heard the other shinobi checking in with his commander via headset. Afterwards he turned and said, "Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, it seems she got away... we're going to continue searching, but you're free to go if you wish."

Asuchi shrugged. He had no pressing matters to attend to, and he couldn’t exactly rest easy knowing he lost a fugitive shinobi in his own village. Before he could respond, however, another question came from the Captain, "Did you know the woman we were chasing?"

Another shrug. ”I had the… pleasure of running into Ms. 47 while I was on an escort mission in to Konohagakure not too long ago. A genin, Ren, one of your ANBU in Training, Jinkotsu Kosei, and myself were assigned to protect Sasaki Sumiko during her move to Konoha. The mission was financed by the Titan Corporation, who I believe was Sumiko’s employer. 47, along with 12 or so thugs ambushed us in the forest in Fire Country. I incapacitated one while Kosei obliterated the rest. 47 literally flew away after that. We interrogated the one survivor, who told us that the 12 men were hired thugs. They didn’t know their target, they didn’t know their objective. Only that they were hired for an ambush. We couldn’t get any more useful information out of him. Sumiko and 47 appeared to recognize one another, although Sumiko wouldn’t tell us anything either. After that, the mission was finished without incident. I’m sorry I can’t tell you more, but that’s all I know about her.”
