“Yes, ma’am.” Haruka solemnly nodded, her eyes sweeping across the floor as she tried to contain the twisting sickness in her stomach. She was without power, without a bargaining chip to do anything more than their bidding. She could not save Ai. Another soul she’d watch drown in the rippling effects of her love. She was no champion of the people. Why couldn’t she just grasp that concept yet? Everytime Haruka dared to stand against injustice or fight for her beliefs, she was punished by the gods.
As her eyes stuck to the floor, she thought of falling through. Downwards into the realm below. Through the madness and darkness of hell where demons lay in wait. Where the most treacherous and tormenting undoings that she dared not dream of happened. All her life she thought of the underworld as a cruel place. She worked hard to make sure the gods never see her fit to be casted there. But nothing teared through with blind madness and sorrow as this life had. The horrors of hell could not hurt her for this life had finally took what was left of her intergrity.
When she left this place, Haruka knew she’d no longer claim right as a protector of justice and a warrior for her village. No one would ever believe her side of the story if they discovered the truth. No one was safe in her alliance. The Shima knew she must live alone forever to protect those she cared for. But how long could she last before she broke her solitude again?
She bowed to the council as they dismissed them. Her heart sunk as she gazed upon Ai once last time. She wouldn’t plead for his forgiveness. What an insult if she did. Instead, her hard gaze returned as her hand rested on his arm, escorting him towards the cage they would keep him because of her selfish choices.
