Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

It was a little warmer today than it had the past few months, albeit that statement meant little with how bitingly cold it remained. The trees, trapped deep in their long winter slumber, still rustled in the breeze and alive with the wildlife it housed. Hidden deeper in the woods than should be allowed, a woman—a mednin—travelled at a slow pace with a destination of solitude in mind.

But it was not the woman, Shinrya Kahako, who walked this trail. It was her body, her uniform, her messy shoulder-length hair… but ‘Shinrya Kahako’ was not the soul in control on this cold afternoon. Stepping out of the tree-line, Ketsueki Sukino carried her satchel to the edge of a boulder of a babbling stream and sat down.

Four hours passed, and still Kahako had yet to return from her unconscious state. She exhausted herself that morning, attempting to find the limit to how much chakra she could use before Sakana could make a decent attempt at taking control. It took a good few minutes to reach it, but once found, Kahako’s situation turned scary as she had to force Sukino into control of her body with no warning.

At first Sukino waited at the Shinrya compound. Many times her state of control would last only a few minutes and she would be back within Kahako’s mind, the ever present sentry to Sakana’s cage. But as thirty minutes turned to an hour, and an hour into two, Sukino grew restless and Kahako’s body grew hungry. Deciding a change of scenery might help relax her, Sukino grabbed cold leftovers from the kitchens before taking a path into the backyard and onward towards the forest. The forest always brought her a sense of peace. Even in this cold climate, the sound of nature around her brought a form of peace that she could not find in this strange time.

And so, she sat in this remote location, eating what Kahako’s son once told her was a hamburger, and staring absently into the distance with her bare feet dipped into the frigid water. Goosebumps dotted her legs, as the water was much too cold to be doing such things, but Kahako’s body always responded better to her presence when she was near the mednin’s natural element. Looking down into the stream, Sukino could almost feel the water as if it was an extension of her own body. The temptation to simply pick it up drove her into a longing she never imagined possible

But the waters would not stir for her. When she was once alive, never did Sukino feel this kind of presence from within her. She knew it was this ‘chakra’ that made shinobi who they were. And she had never been a shinobi. But she could still feel Kahako’s chakra all the same. If begged for her to call it. Her soul linked to it in such way, that the soul could never be separated from Kahako without Kahako forever losing her ability to be a shinobi.

Between bites, Sukino sighed and closed her eyes. Never had she felt so helpless than in moments when she thought about it. It made her head spin and got her nowhere. Already frustrated, Sukino set her sandwich down and hopped of her perch into the water. The edge only came up to her shins and she shivered in the cold. She didn’t know the first thing about being a shinobi, but it was too tempting for her not to try to call the powers that Kahako housed within her.

Closing her eyes, Sukino focused on the power within, gently coaxing it to her fingertips. Holding out her palm over the water, she breathed out deeply. With a quick motion, and what she assumed was the release of chakra outward, she lifted her hand to pull the water from the stream.

Nothing. Frowning, Sukino tried again. And again. And again. After the tenth time, she kicked the waterbed in frustration. It was a stupid move on her part, because as soon as her pads hit the riverbed, her toe scraped painfully against the jagged rocks underneath. “God dammit,” Sukino cried out before quickly limping to the water’s edge. Sitting back on her boulder, she inspected the tiny wound. It didn’t bleed, but it was red and smarted.
Kahako Split Personality Sukino and Sakana:

There are two ‘souls’ residing in Kahako’s mind. Two entities separate from her own sitting resolutely on opposite ends of the moral spectrum. Kahako theorizes that the souls are leftover chakra signatures that Ketsueki Satou’s demon consumed when it killed its prey. As to why the demon does this, Kahako has no idea.

Some overused cliché about Ying and Yang could be alluded to the souls, but that would insinuate both sides were in balance—striking even blows for control. This could not be further from the truth, as Kahako had to sacrifice her duty and dreams as a shinobi to keep one side under control.

The first personality, Ketsueki Sukino, is more so benign that she is benevolent. Since she already lived and died, Sukino was content with spending the rest of Kahako’s life being nothing more than a fly on the mental wall. As she was a peasant when she was alive, the spirit often told Kahako she felt as if she would be a hindrance in Kahako’s duties. This soul accepted its violent death, and only manifested itself when Kahako was in the presence of her once husband, Ketsueki Satou. Even then, it was just to the surface of Kahako’s consciousness so that it could look upon his face and see if he was okay.

However, that changed when Kahako consumed the second soul, Tokugawa Sakana. Daughter to a lord from a land whose borders were removed from even the most ancient of maps, this soul was corrupted by Satou’s demon blood, becoming demon-like herself before dying by his hands. It hungers for Satou’s power, and delights in telling Kahako the new and creative ways it will use Satou to torture those she cares about should it ever break free.

As a result, it is not content on living out its days in the recesses of Kahako’s subconscious. With the combined efforts of Sukino and Kahako, Kahako can keep Sakana under control. So long as Kahako does not actively use her chakra. For any sort of mental fatigue will break the barrier keeping Sakana dormant.

It was not uncommon for Tatsuo to be exploring the Ancient Forest, despite the many dangers it had from years of Ninja tinkering. Living on the forests edge made it easy for him to access the forest since he didn't live off in the far reaches of the Village Hidden in the Clouds. Tatsuo had met Kahako once before but he did not understand the full extent of her troubles. Struggling with souls was an unimaginable problem for Tatsuo but when he stumbled across Kahako struggling with an injured toe the boy rushed over. Calling from the tree line as he pierced through the thick brush, "Ms. Kahako, right?" He furrowed it was definitely Kahako's body, but he could feel something different about her. It wasn't a bad thing but it definitely wasn't Kahako. The boy's eyebrows furrowed as he kept his guard up. He'd play this game for a little bit, at least to gather information. "Are you okay? I saw you limping from the water, I just wanted to make sure you weren't injured." Maybe she just has a twin? It's most definitely her, but it just feels different. "Do you remember me?"

At the sound of Kahako’s name, Sukino visibly stiffened. Rarely did she run into someone who wasn’t already aware of her current situation. To avoid explaining a story she didn’t feel like it was hers to tell, she went out of her way to avoid the public. Sukino bit her bottom lip as the boy expressed concern over the embarrassing display he just witnessed. Face flushed from both exertion and embarrassment, she turned towards him and stood, slipping slightly on the wet stone bank before quickly catching herself.

“I’m fine, I’m fine!” Sukino reassured catching her balance, now thoroughly mortified. “I just stubbed my toe on the riverbed. Ah, nothing to worry about, the pain is certainly subsiding.” It was as if Kahako had done a 180. While the woman he met the one night was calm and assured, this woman before him was flighty. Her every emotion was easily readable, and she twined and untwined her fingers like a child caught with her hand in the cookie jar.

The nervousness grew when Tatsuo asked Sukino if she remembered him. Biting her lip again, Sukino considered simply saying ‘yes’ in order to avoid further embarrassment. But what if they were in a conversation before they parted ways, and he wanted to continue it? She remembered the last time she tried to hide her identity. It seemed to make the situation more awkward that better. “I am sorry, onii-san,” she started, hesitant to admit to this stranger the truth to Kahako’s condition. “I am not Kahako-chan.

“I mean,” she continued, raising her palms up in a defensive stance, “This is Kahako-chan’s body, so you have the right person, but I am not her. More like… a part of her? But not really…” by now, Sukino was a several shades of red darker. “Gods… I am doing a terrible job at explaining this…. I am Ketsueki Sukino,” she said finally with a bow. “One of the souls who shares this body with Shinrya Kahako. We do not share memories, so whatever memories you may have with her, I do not? It is hard to explain.”

Tatsuo nodded as he listened to her explain how the pain was subsiding fast. With a a grin he said "Well that's good at least." But even before Kahako explained to him that she was someone else he could just feel it, the woman felt so different than the one who helped him on that day. It made him apprehensive and when she said she did not remember him his spirit was almost dampened. But his disappointed look turned to one of confusion as she explained she indeed was not Kahako. Tatsuo's brows furrowed and only continued to furrow farther as he explanation made less and less sense. He wasn't exactly the most knowledgeable person in the world, but he tried to be understanding. "Wh- uhh.. So you're her? But not her? What I mean.. okay?" he said rubbing the back of his neck trying to make sense of it all. How could you be inside someone but not be them, was she a demon, or something worse? He bit the bottom of his lip, he liked Kahako enough she was nice but this new strange lady made him just a bit uncomfortable.

"So it was the real Kahako when I talked to her that night, right? Not one of her uhh.. souls?" he said still trying to wrap his head around the whole idea of multiple souls in one body. He had never experienced anything like this, come to think of it, he had never encountered a jinchuriki up until this point either. So the whole idea of another soul inhabiting a body was completely foreign to him. "Does it.. hurt? Like is there enough room? What if you want to sleep but they are wide awake? What happens when they eat a food you don't like? Or what happens if they like music that you hate do you start getting angry? Can you do anything about it? How do you guys decide who controls the body? Is it like a shift? You get nights, she gets mornings or whatever?" So many questions and he had no problem shooting them off like a machine gun. "Does it hurt? Can I help?" he said finally deciding to help, Kahako helped him when he needed it, he'd need to pay it forward.

Sukino blinked at the thought of another soul talking to Tatsuo. “Oh, no. It was Kahako-chan. There’s only two of us attached to her,” she answered vaguely. She didn’t know Kahako’s relationship to the man before her, and didn’t want to worry him further about the other soul if he wasn’t close enough comrades with her host.

Then came the slew of questions. Like a stack of books quickly being tossed in her hands, Sukino couldn’t help but feel a little overwhelmed as each question mounted one atop the other. “Ummm… no… it doesn’t hurt. Not now…” She admitted, really that being one of the few questions she could pick out of the many he had. “There is very little we share besides a presence.” Tapping a finger against her chin, Sukino looked up, thinking of the simplest way to describe what it was like to share a body. “It’s like… living in the same home with someone, but never being there at the same time as them. You know they exist, and you see bits of their memories through photos or doodles they’ve left behind. But it’s Kahako’s home. She was the one born with this body. We are just here based on… circumstances…”

With that, Sukino smiled. A giggle escaped her that was a light as a bell. “And you are very kind for offering your services. But even with the brightest of minds, I am afraid fixing us will take more than one kind young man.” With a sigh, Sukino looked off a smile struggled to remain on her face. Not wanting to ruin the mood with this stranger, she tried to change the topic. “Kahako should be returning to consciousness soon… if you would like to wait. I was practicing… well more so failing at trying to control her chakra.”

Sukino sighed again, looking at the palm of her hand. A crinkle grew at her brow. “If only I had the power she has when I was alive. Then maybe I would have received the same training.” ‘and maybe I wouldn’t have died…’ Sukino sook the dangerous thought from her mind. She long since accepted her death, and to think about it with regret only made Kahako’s sitation all the more dangerous. With a quick turn, she waded back into the freezing stream. Closing her eyes, she summoned the chakra from within pushing it once again to the palm of her hands. Just as Tatsuo had seen Kahako do on the night it was snowing, Sukino waved her hand to the side. However, nothing happened and the water continued downstream just as gravity dictated.

The more they spoke, the more Tatsuo grew confused. She wasn't able to answer any of his questions to the point of him understanding. But when she attempted, and failed, to mold chakra Tatsuo's eyes lit up. That was something he knew about! "You've never had anyone teach you how to mold chakra, have you?" He thought so as her movements were correct but nothing happened. "I don't mean to offend, but it's not about waving your hands around and then bam, something happens. It's something inside you, almost like.. you know when you don't want to get out of bed but you still do? It's kind of like that.. you have it, that motivation, you just need to control it. Here.. get out of the water." he said waving her over, Tatsuo hated the cold and a frigid river was not his idea of a good time.

Tatsuo found a relatively flat patch of grass and took a seat. Crossing his legs and placing his hands on his knees. "You've got to build it up first, you have to feel it." Tatsuo furrowed his brows remembering how they taught it back in the academy, back then it was no help. It wasn't until Tatsuo gained access to his Wood Element before he could actually mold chakra in any meaningful form but he remembered the lessons that he was taught in between shouts from his father and scolding of his teachers. He probably wasn't the best person to teach one to mold chakra, but with age came maturity and control. Tatsuo had gotten to the point where his natural energy and his chakra were intertwined and he could activate either when he needed to. Even using them together to enforce his own chakra with the wrath of nature.

Once Sukino presumably sat down, Tatsuo took in a deep breath and a long exhale. "First you've got to relax, you gotta feel the chakra swelling inside you. Once you feel it that's only half the battle, then you've got to mold it and bend it to your will. Chakra itself is just like a fire, it'll burn in no particular direction or without any meaning. But if you keep it in a fire place it won't burn your house down, but it'll warm it, ya' know?" he said trying to offer the best explanation the boy could think of. "Once you feel like you've noticed that strength in you, tell me and i'll help you with the next part." He wasn't sure if he could be of much help here, or if his advice would fall on deaf ears. But after all he wanted to help Kahako or Suniko, whoever it was, the whole concept still confused him. She or not she helped him that one night when he needed it most, this was the absolute least he could do to begin paying back that enormous debt.

At his behest, Sukino tentatively stepped out of the water to where Tatsuo sat. Lowering herself into a Seiza position. “Yes…” she admitted sheepishly. It was somewhat embarrassing after all to be in the body of a medical chief and have to admit that she herself did not deserve the title. Still, as she made herself comfortable, she listened intently to what the boy had to say. So… he was a shinobi as well? No better person to learn from than a master skilled in their craft.

“Okay… close my eyes… feel the strength from within. From within.... froooooom withiiiiin....” Straightening her back, she fell into a meditative stance and sighed deeply. Now that she wasn’t in the water, Kahako’s chakra felt further from her grasp. Like a bramble bush stood between her and the source of power that flowed through her body. Yet Tatsuo said that she had to take control of the chakra. “You said to treat it like fire, right?” She asked with her eyes still closed. Maybe that was her problem. She tried to let it flow freely before. What if a firmer hand was needed?

From within, she visualized reaching out towards the center of the chakra. It balked at her, recognizing her connection to us, but ultimately distrusting the individual who wasn’t its master. When she tried to grab control of it instead of just letting it flow through her, it pushed her back.

Ready to give up on her endeavor, Sukino’s brow crinkled again. But before she pulled away, a slightly different kind of chakra caught her attention. It was Kahako’s chakra, but it was more… neutral? Reaching out to this chakra was a lot easier than to the other. This didn’t feel as attuned to water as well. Latching onto it, Sukino was surprised at how simple it was to control it. As if she was trying to tame a wild horse before, and now, she was given a young fowl.

Chakra in figurative hand, Sukino smiled. “Okay! I think I have something.” Trying to keep her focus on it, she didn’t dare open her eyes. “What now?”

Tatsuo watched as she struggled to get control of her chakra system, sometime it took people years but living in a body that was supposedly at the level of Kahako would make it much easier as she didn't have to spend the years growing the chakra. Just learning to maintain it. When she said she finally gained control if it he nodded a few times despite her not being able to see him since her eyes were closed. With a grin he said, "Alright, now that you've grabbed onto it.. bring your hands together like this." he said slowly bringing his hands together in a tiger-seal. Tatsuo then transformed into an exact likeness of Sukino down to every hair on her, or Kahako's head.

"I've got no idea if you'll be able to actually do it. It takes some practice, but just use your chakra as a cloak that transforms you. Pull it out of you, then imagine it changing you into me, or a rock, or whatever you want. Don't worry you can turn back once you're done. If you can do this, it'll give you some experience in doing all this chakra stuff." Tatsuo took another deep breath and switched from Sukino to an old man, then to a rock, then back to himself. Quite rapidly, "Once you get good at it you can do it a lot. It's also probably one of the most basic jutsu, every academy student learns it in some way shape or form."

Peaking an eye open, Sukino eyed the hand sign Tatsuo showed her and mimicked it with one of her own. When he transformed into several images one right after another, she promptly lost control of the chakra she held in her hand. Dazed, Sukino blinked a couple times before feeling embarrassed once again. “Ah… lost it. I guess I wasn’t expecting… that… let me try again.”

Closing her eyes once more, Sukino summoned and grabbed at Kahako’s chakra much faster than before. This time, she copied the tiger symbol and tried her hand at becoming a rock, just as he instructed. Once again, nothing happened.

Brow furrowed, she repeated the process again. Just before making a hand sign, she paused. It didn’t have to be a rock, just as Tatsuo instructed. Sukino could be anything… anyone. Maybe even…. Image in place, Sukino performed her hand sign.

A poof of smoke signaling a successful jutsu temporarily clouded Tatsuo’s view, but as soon as it cleared, in Kahako’s place sat a slightly different woman. Her dark brown hair was much longer than Kahako’s, reaching below her mid-back before being tied off at the end and curled into a knot. Instead of Kahako’s shinobi uniform, a thin bare yukata replaced it, ragged and ripped from years of use in rice fields. Obvious features aside, there were subtle changes in Kahako’s new appearance as well. Thinner, almost sickly in a way, her cheek bones were sharper than Kahako’s ever were. As if she were borderline malnourished. Opening her eyes, the shade of green would still be there, but they too were different. They were slightly different shape that influenced her air of timid-ness.

“Did it work?” Sukino asked. Looking at her hands, she grew very quiet inspecting them. They were thinner, smaller than Kahako’s and calloused in a way a weapon could not create. But years in a field could.

Suddenly standing, she rushed to the river bank, and peered over the edge. What she saw in her reflection made her audibly gasp. It was her. From her eyes to her nose to her slightly too thin cheeks, the person she was before she died stared back at her instead of her round-faced host. She had not seen this reflection in almost five-hundred years, and she didn’t think she ever would look upon it again.

Tears started to stream down her cheeks. “Thank you…” she started in a broken whisper. A ring of laughter escaped from her chest as she turned, facing Tatsuo once more. She wiped her face with the sleeve of her yukata, but the tears would not stop. “We were so focused on trying to clarify who I was, I never did get your name. What was it again?” She laughed again even though she openly cried. Joy pulsed through her just as the chakra from the simple jutsu pulsed along her skin.

It was not the end of her journey to being able to utilize Kahako’s chakra, but this man before her had given her a start on her path. Now, whenever she was forced into control, she would have a chance to protect both herself and Kahako if the need arose. He had given her the means to find a way to make Kahako’s life a little less terrifying. And in teaching her such a simple jutsu, he had also given Sukino so much more. More than words of gratitude could ever express.

Even for Tatsuo it wasn't long for him to realize exactly who the girl transformed to. That warm feeling when you help someone coursed threw his veins. He was happy to give Suniko some relief in the intense situation she was dealt with. He may have not understood the details, or really understood anything about it. But the good in situations was something Tatsuo could always see, he sat quietly as to not make the situation any more embarrassing for her than it may be. As she thanked Tatsuo he shook his head and smiled, in a soft tone he said, "That was all you. I just pointed you in the right direction." he said going to stand, to give the girl some alone time with her new, or rather, old form. Granting her that level of independence was exactly what Tatsuo wanted to do. Whether it was the direction he wanted to take originally didn't matter. When she said there was nothing he could do to help, that was all the more reason to assist. As he began to depart, he looked back as she asked him his name. "I'm Tatsuo, of Konoha. It was nice meeting you Suniko. I hope we meet again." before departing back into the forest.
