"Aww..." Naoki was a bit sad about not getting the last one right. But she passed, so all in all, she wasn't too sad about it. "Could you tell me what the correct answer is then sir? Since the test is over anyway?"

As soon as Lord Onimaru said something about a combat exam, Naoki tensed up. With her current situation, being unable to see and just discovering she can use sonar to an extent, she was apprehensive about taking a combat exam, especially because she didn't know the first thing about one.

Her hand shot up, and she asked, "Could you tell me about the rules for the combat exam sir?"

 

[Toraono Kuro]

Lord Onimaru put away her paper exam materials and started her a proper ledger of lessons learned and training results. As ever within the dojo everything was documented to provide a tracking system for progress and results of training techniques. "The correct answer varies, there are many medical jutsu and methods to restore health, as far as items go there are recovery items that you actually strike people with in order to restore their health and enhance healing."<i></i>

Lord Onimaru became very stern and fatherly at the same time..."There are no rules to actual combat, you will be attacked, you will react to the attacker, you will defeat the enemy. You are still within your period of rest while your weapon is being forged."<i></i>

"Oh! There are things you can hit people with to restore their health?" Hitting people sounded counterproductive to trying to heal them. How would that feel though? Would it hurt or feel better?

"But I'd be fighting against another person right? 'Defeat' has a lot of meanings... She was worried that she'd have to fight to kill, unaware of the fact that her opponent for the exam would be a puppet. Additionally, she was concerned as she didn't know any immobilisation techniques, so if the goal was to render the opponent unable to fight, she wouldn't have any idea how to go about doing so.

Naoki walked over to a nearby chair as Lord Onimaru said the word rest, forgetting to take a seat in all the excitement. She leaned back, and tried to relax a little before the next portion of her exam. Unable to do so, she decided she'd try again while imagining what kind of weapon Lord Onimaru was having prepared for her, with a little more success.

The weaponsmith arrived with a set of weapons for Naoki to choose from. Once decided she would be able to channel her energies into that weapon with a simple rune to activate the crystal. Lord Onimaru bowed to the weaponsmith as he placed the blades before Naoki to await her touch and contemplation.



"Naoki it is now time to choose the weapon that defines your combat thoughts, there is a box before you that contains crystallized blades that will respond to your unique senses. Once one of the weapons satisfies your touch and contemplation. We will place a rune upon that blade so that it responds to your chakra. Please choose one..."<i></i>

Lord Onimaru then made sure to place the box of blades in her hands so that she could check them for herself.

Feeling the box, and having sensed it being open, Naoki put the box on the table to examine its contents. The six pieces of metal in the box were unfamiliar to her, and she picked up each one with caution.

The first one she picked up was a knife with a three-pointed blade. Running her fingers across the flat edge of the blade, she thought, This one's pretty straightforward... but I don't think I'd be able to use its charm point very well. Best I could do with this one is swing it around like a normal knife. It's got a pretty handle though... She'd noted the design on the handle, and though she was unable to see it, it felt like the entire knife was made of metal so she could imagine it easily.

The second one didn't feel like a blade. What's this... A necklace? Naoki fiddled with the pendant a little, and the small shuriken mounted on the disc came off. She panicked, until she realised that it could be reattached. This is pretty cool! There's only one of them though. I doubt I'd be able to use this one much... Probably for one surprise attack. Oooh, or maybe I could keep it on me so that if I ever got kidnapped, I could use it to cut my ropes! Then again, my hands would be tied... Her train of thought continued until she snapped herself out of it. I shouldn't be wasting time like this...

Continuing onwards quickly, she moved on to the next weapon. It had a series of holes instead of a handle. How do I... what is this? Naoki was intrigued by this one, as she'd never even imagined this kind of design. She tried putting her fingers through the holes, with the jagged side inwards. Lord Onimaru stood by as he watched the girl handle the knife, waiting to see if she'd figure out the right way to hold it.

She didn't, and moved on to the next one. It was a standard kunai, and was the easiest to recognise. I would be able to hide this somewhere so it can't be seen... but it's kinda boring. What's this character... Naoki felt an engraved character on the blade of the kunai. She wasn't sure, but she figured it was the character for 'shinobi'. Though she was a bit impressed with the character, and the kunai was the most functional one to be sure, Naoki would move on to the other pieces before making a choice.

The fifth weapon had two smaller blades, and Naoki took some time in imagining what she could do with it, but then decided that she'd be more prone to hurting herself with most of her ideas and went to the next weapon.

The sixth and final weapon was the most varied in its design, being based off a regular kunai but cut in various places to make it look more visually appealing. This was not of much consequence to Naoki however, for obvious reasons.

Each weapon thoroughly examined, Naoki rethought her choices and decided to revisit the third weapon she picked up. She had a feeling that she was missing something about it, and she was. Having an idea and flipping the knife so she would hold it backhanded, she let out a "ohh!" of clarity and decided on this one, even though it was not easily hidden and didn't have the longer reach of the standard kunai. Perhaps it was due to her easily impressionable mind, but she found this one the coolest. She would figure it out later on, but the jagged side also adds a slice to her punches, and would be a nice touch to any enemy's face. Additionally, should the enemy have fast reflexes and dodge her punch to the side, she would be able to continue the movement and catch them off-guard with a slash using the blade.

"I'd like to have this one sir," she said, brandishing the knife, now correctly positioned in her left hand.

Lord Onimaru smiled at he choice as he nodded to the weaponsmith whom quickly and advanced elemental chakra rune upon the blade as it responded to her touch and her true inner chakra the metallic blade responded by transforming its edges and defensive properties to sound promoting crystal. When she was ready she would be able to wield sound jutsu through this blade. "That is a very dynamic choice of weapon. You can throw the blade, wield the handguard as spiked brass knuckles, it has true defensive posture and offensive potential for the counter strikes you mentioned earlier. That is a good choice for you, since the weaponsmith has applied runes to it to respond to your will and current skill level. Choose your next feature for this weapon carefully as I explain what our weaponsmith can do for you, if you plan to be a close combat fighter he can make sure this weapon allows you to fight in an unarmed manner, this will allow you to use standard fist fighting techniques and suppress your enemy's movement. If you choose to use the slashing effect, you will need to practice sword and blade fighting tactics to cause heavy damage to muscles through actual bleeding and cuts. Last but not least there is piercing styles where you motion to stab your enemies with precision and disable your enemies strike by strike. As you get stronger and more proficient with your weapon you can have two styles of combat for your weapon. Your first choice is your primary and the most crucial... from the stories we have about your birthright your best choice would be unarmed. After you have chosen what type of combat you wish to begin with you must choose the first augment of your weapon, after the combat exam you will choose a second.

Naoki thought her next decision over, and tried to remember all the effects as she considered her options.

I want to be an attacker type, so I'd need an augment that allows me to attack a lot. I think I'd like something that lets me attack quickly though, since I don't want to have to slow down...

Lord Onimaru smiled as he placed sparring mats around the chamber so that she could fall around and not receive a concussion or deep bruising. "Practice with your weapon for a moment while we ready a training puppet for you to demonstrate your combat potential."<i></i> The blade was complete for now and in soon to be far more capable hands. If anything Lord Onimaru expected her to find her own path in combat so quickly that even she would not notice what she was truly capable of. His legends insisted that Hashigaki clan members were natural combat masters and capable of striking their opponents without full contact. He was looking forward to actually seeing if it was truth or fiction. A large gel laced, water filled sparring dummy was placed in the center of the chamber to give Naoki a simulated target and the effects of striking a real person.
"A life model decoy puppet has been placed in front of you for you to practice own. It is covered in gel to simulate flesh and has a water pump system to simulate both a heart and blood flow. A puppeteer will make sure the target reacts the same way a person would if they were struck. Please practice till you feel ready for the final portion of your exam."<i></i> Nodding to a puppeteer, the young lady activated the puppet's internal water heart and vein system. Moving the puppet around like an average human male it approached Naoki at an obvious walking pace. Naoki should be able to hear its heart, it;s movement and the position of its body.

OOC: Waiting on weapon approval... Do I have to wait for it to be approved to use it in a non-PvP situation? Was I supposed to post it in the Sand Request board or my FAQ? It's in both just to be safe... I'll delete the unnecessary one later.

Okay, so I'll be fighting a dummy... Naoki was relieved as she didn't feel like she was ready to fight another human being, whether or not they were holding back on her account. After all, the act of hurting someone was not an act anyone would want to get used to quickly, given the accompanying label of heartless. She would have to get used to the idea at some point however, if she wanted to succeed as a shinobi, and this was the idea that terrified her, as soon as she thought of it later on while she cooled down from the events of the day.

Naoki observed the movements of the dummy before attempting to strike, having learned from one of the shop's customers that the best thing to do before a fight is to observe the target. It wasn't doing much other than moving at a measured pace, from what she could sense. She decided to use the time in which the puppeteer was taking it easy on her to figure out faster and more discreet ways of making sounds to use for echolocation.

She started jogging a little in place, and it helped her locate the puppeteer herself as well as the sparring mats Lord Onimaru had thoughtfully placed in case she fell. She could tell the area of the room, as well as how high the ceiling was, but as she stepped on the mats, she lost the exact measurements as the mats muted her steps. This could be a problem if I get on this kind of floor... I'm going to need to try something else.

Naoki began snapping her fingers like she did before, remembering how cool she felt doing it. She could now sense a lot of details about the room itself, as well as the young lady controlling the dummy and the dummy itself. She noted the pumping of the dummy's 'heart' and was a little confused about why she could hear a heartbeat from it, but she didn't concern herself with it too much. It was a bit too noticeable though, and she needed to have something which didn't use her hands, or she wouldn't be able to use any jutsu. She'd have to restrict the snapping to locating objects or hidden doors in dark rooms if she ever went on any joint missions... and that would only be if she was sure there were no enemies listening in.

Her thoughts went to her mouth now, and she started trying to think of any viable noise to be making during battle at regular intervals. It had to be either viable... or undetectable. Or she could to depend on the environment to provide a noise... but that would pretty much rule out any stealth mission, unless it took place in a forest.

Just then, she sighed, and was able to sense enough of the area around her to navigate around the dummy, which was still moving towards her. Naoki tilted her head, and decided she'd use her breaths to time her actions. "I'm ready, you can stop easing up on me now," she said, sliding into a ready stance.

Lord Onimaru nodded to the puppeteer and set the standards for the test. They would enter a set series of combat tactics 6 seconds per iteration for 30 seconds. In the ninja world most battles could be decided in under a minute so 30 seconds was a decent gauge of Naoki's commitment to her goals.

"Analysing myself?" she asked, rhetorically. Naoki knew she had to figure out her strengths before she would be able to fight effectively.
Her mother said to her once, "Naoki, listen to me okay? Before you try to hold down a fish this big, you need to know if you'll be able to handle it. Even if you've gotten it on the rocks, if you don't know its abilities and yours, you should never-" CHOP. "let down-" CHOP. "your guard." CHOP. They had been preparing a swordfish her father caught in a stroke of luck and were not about to sell it.

Being heavier and taller than most girls her age, she had much vitality, and is therefore able to sustain heavy blows. Her experience on her father's (now sizable) fishing boat hoisting sails and securing the higher knots also taught her how to move quickly so as to avoid being blown over by the strong winds in the middle of the sea.

Lord Onimaru had come to recognize the furrow in her brow when she was coming to a new understanding about herself and encouraged her directly by explaining things he could already see in her but she needed to understand it about herself before she could use it. "Feel the shifting of muscle beneath your skin. Feel the unyielding strength within your ligaments and muscles. Listen to the flow of blood within your limbs and organs, feel the fierce hot surge of wrath within your mind, and body and wield your body as an instrument of your will. Let your strength display itself in your strikes like a bull or a behemoth would gore the enemies of their herds."<i></i> Lord Onimaru could see it in her stance and the way her body moved when she committed herself to after each motion.

There were several words Naoki hadn't come across in what Lord Onimaru just said, and quite a few more phrases, but she got the basic idea.

Holding the blade she was just given, she shot off a few punches into thin air, keeping well away from the puppet currently in the center of the room in case part of the combat exam was reactions to surprise attacks. She tried chaining as many punches as possible at full power, then found that she became slightly exhausted after it, briefly wondering if she could use chakra to bolster her stamina. She then remembered the taijutsu she just learned, and executed the one-two again, utilising her chakra to add power to her strikes. Upon successful completion, Naoki felt her chakra start to become more defined.

So this... is chakra. She had been feeling it throughout the day, just faintly, but she could sense her chakra flow clearly now, coursing through her veins instead of just at her center. She had an understanding of how best to attack the enemy to allow for a faster strike. She could feel where she would be the most vulnerable based on her knowledge of how she would choose to react to a given action. She was able to gauge her current level of strength as well, which, though not yet at the level of a bull's, was becoming more pronounced as she set herself in the mindset of someday putting it to good use.

Getting more familiar with herself and how she moved, she was able to minimise the movements required for several actions.

Lord Onimaru watched Naoki appreciatively as she pushed herself and found the flow and timing of her speed. It seemed she was getting used to her weapon and pushing onward to master herself as well. Maybe instead of intense strength she would master Conservative Motion

in her combat tactics and abilities or perhaps she would master both. "Naoki-san, perhaps we can test your strength for a moment please try and lift the training puppet standing in front of you. I assure you this is not a trick nor will the puppet attack you. I simply wish to gauge your strength before committing to the combat portion of your genin exam."<i></i>

With a nod to the puppeteer to use chakra to weigh it down more than usual Lord Onimaru stepped forth to closely observe her actual physical structure without physically touching her instead he literally used the transition of her shadow as a type of measurement.

Naoki sensed pressure on the mats, and her eyebrows scrunched up for what seemed to be the hundredth time now. Did the dummy just... squish itself down? A quick exhalation showed her that this was not the case, but she was puzzled as to why the puppet suddenly seemed heavier. The pumping was steady though, no different from a few seconds ago, so she knew that the puppet had not been replaced in the short span of time when she was unable to sense anything between regular breaths.

Following instructions, she walked over to the puppet to attempt lifting it. As she got closer, she snapped her fingers to gain some details, paying extra attention to any related differences between now and the last time she snapped her fingers. She tilted her head, and gave a little smile of understanding. She was able to figure out why the puppet had become heavier all of a sudden - there was chakra pushing it down, without altering its shape. This was from the puppeteer's expression, which was just slightly more concentrated than before. A quick deduction process told her that the puppeteer had to be either using more chakra than before, or was thinking about her duties after this. Or maybe today's dinner. Because everyone's interested in food.

Regarding the puppet itself though, she was confident... that she wouldn't be able to lift it. Especially if the puppet was as heavy as an average person before the added pressure. But she would not be faulted for not giving it her best.

Now in front of the puppet, she bent her knees, as her father taught her to when lifting boxes, and hugged the puppet's legs tight before pulling herself upwards. Face showing her effort, she tried a different approach. If the puppet was using chakra, so would she. Naoki directed her chakra to her lower legs, pushing them up in hopes of at least putting up a fight. Not to the point of endangering herself though, keeping in mind the exam that comes after this.

Gritting her teeth, she let go after several short tugs upwards with no purchase, conceding defeat with visible disappointment even though the 'windows to her soul' were still shut. Standing up, she faced Lord Onimaru and said, "I'm sorry sir, I don't think I'll be able to lift it." She'd noticed that she didn't have to remind herself to adjust her hearing between speech and sensing now, and gained hope for more improvement in the future. For now. she tacked on to her previous statement.

 

[Toraono Kuro]

Lord Onimaru was inclined to disagree, "Fortunately for you that if you had actually lifted it you would have broken the support structures in the floor beneath your feet, only several students have done so and they were all older and far more muscled than yourself. What you have done is pit your physical strength against a block of energy anchored to the point that it weighs ten times your actual body weight. After measuring the resistance you generated in your attempts to move it we have found that your are three times stronger than what your natural skeletal system and current musculature would suggest. This means that as you weigh 30 kilograms you just applied enough pressure to the floor to lift 90 kilograms. Needless to say your strength and growth over the past thirty hours has been tremendous."<i></i> Lord Onimaru gave her a charm that read in braille along the backside 'strong as a bull'.

Stunned, she took the charm as it was handed to her. "Thank you sir..." she mumbled, still a bit disoriented from the information she was just given as well as from the blood rushing to her legs when she tried boosting them, and tried to read it. 'Strong as a bull'... Me? Naoki had always lost to her father during their arm-wrestling matches. Her growth since getting to the Toraono Dojo must be due to their exceptional teaching methods and patience. She felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude, before the puzzle of the moving anchor dawned on her.

She didn't think it could have been anchored to the ground in such a short time, as the puppet was moving at an average pace just a few minutes ago. What if it was already anchored to the ground while it moved? But then there should be signs of tracks or something on the ground... Her hand went to her chin absentmindedly as she figured it out... or so she thought.

Maybe the extra chakra being used was to anchor the puppet to a machine in the ground? That way it wouldn't take as much time to anchor to the ground, and I wouldn't have heard anything moving below ground... Yep, that's probably it. Naoki still wasn't too sure, but she believed this was the case, and proceeded with more practice.

After kicking and punching the air a couple of times, she asked for permission to just practice on the puppet, as she wanted to work on her accuracy. Most of her punches were unable to hit the exact spot she wanted to hit, and her kicks were usually far off the mark.

 

[Toraono Kuro]

Lord Onimaru nodded to the puppeteer and his puppet strings resumed as the gravity jutsu used to make the puppet far heavier was removed. With the puppeteer insuring the life model decoy would react like a normal person would when struck the training resumed at an earnest pace. Slowly without Samejima's notice chakra was pulsed into her body by Lord Onimaru's shadow chamber. This was the last time he would be able to use it for the day as three was his limit but he was certain this would be the last time it was necessary as Naoki was now generating her own elemental chakra absent mindedly. It would not be long before she would learn to use it properly and with a purpose all her own. "Go ahead and practice Naoki, when you are ready to test let me know."<i></i>

Upon getting the ok, Naoki faced the puppet again and studied it, realising she didn't have an exact target to strike. She could always go for the middle of the chest, as it was the largest target, but it was also the part that she would guard the most if she was being attacked. By that logic, the best thing to do was to aim for one of the limbs, but what if the limbs were also moving?

She considered asking the puppeteer to move the puppet around for her, but decided against it for some reason. She most likely didn't know it at the time, but subconsciously she knew it would be cheating, and she wanted her exam results to be fair. If she sees the puppet's attack pattern, it would be considerably easier to figure out its holes. Currently, as it is motionless, all she would be doing is general training against a regular sized puppet.

Naoki ended up trying out some basic punches on the puppet after all, focusing on a point on the torso. Punching the middle, exactly, after several repetitions, she tried kicking the same spot, but ended up just landing hits on the left and right sides of the puppet. Up until now, she had only been performing roundhouse kicks, as it was the only kick she'd seen, but faced with the problem of not getting the accuracy down, she tried a frontal push kick. Unfortunately, due to her stature, she was unable to kick the same spot, but came close at centimeters below it.

She wanted to know how to reach a taller opponent's head, because, at least for a while, she wouldn't be able to fight on equal footing with an average adult opponent. Naoki tried a jump kick next, taking a running start, and doing a long jump before sticking her foot out in the puppet's general direction. It was a miss though, and it launched her past the puppet onto a mat. She brushed herself off and tried it again, missing for a second time.

Ahh, that was pretty embarrassing. Maybe I should try something else. If I can't hit him from the front...

She had control over her chakra now after all. It felt somewhat different now. It's... breezy. As she thought this, she had an idea.

Another running start, but this time with a high jump right in front of the puppet, she used her chakra to further propel herself into the air and brought her foot down, on target. Then, as if the move she just pulled was too cool to be left alone, she slid off the puppet sideways with her leg still extended and landed with a thud on the mats. That was just as embarrassing as before! Naoki thought, burying her face in her hands, still lying on the mat.

Lord Onimaru walked out and help Naoki up as his shadow dome jutsu released itself. He calmly set her upon a comfortable chair and pulled forth some scrolls in braille that taught ninjutsu. "You are trying too hard to simply hit your opponent, try to use your chakra to strike it instead. Use these scrolls to mold the chakra inside you, then release the chakra through your vibrations, your hands, or your voice. You should find it easy for you to accomplish this feat as it is literally in your blood."<i></i> After placing the scroll in Naoki's hands Lord Onimaru put some distance between himself and the young ninja in training for if his predictions were correct her sonic abilities would be extraordinary. Ordinarily she wouldn't be able to use ninjutsu this strong but since she would be reciting from a scroll it should be quite effective.

As the name suggests, the user claps their hands together, disrupting chakra that is focused between them to create an amplified soundwave spreading from the user.
