Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Kauru sat atop a dune on the outskirts of Wind Country, an area commonly known as the Expanse. He was still at least half a day’s walk from Sora, which was volitional. Kauru never meant to make it to Sora. Instead, his object was just to meander and look for a place to be alone with his thoughts and his shamisen. This was part of the process Kauru undertook in developing his music, as it afforded him the opportunity to try counterintuitive progressions, unique scales, and arrangements without the fear of losing credibility to an audience. “The things we do for art…” Kauru muttered, a small smile spreading across his face.

Years ago, before his father had passed, Kauru wouldn’t have even dreamed of tagging along to the area with a full escort. Now, he had found his way out past all of the grime and bustle of Sunagakure specifically to be alone. Kauru spoke to the vast emptiness, dejected. “All of the training, all the time spent at the academy and on all of those missions with the old team… none of it helped me half as much as these. How does it make sense that my greatest asset as a shinobi came about in such a haphazard way? Where would I be today if not for my music in that one, singular moment…?”

Underneath the flowing and loose crimson linen scarf which was wrapped around the Chuunin’s head, Kauru’s eyes rattled in their sockets, straining and begging to see the sun sinking into the horizon. Kauru knew dusk was imminent from the rapidly fading chirping of birds and the emergence of the incessant supersonic calls of bats seeking prey. I know how you feel, friends.

The young Hashigaki had grown accustomed to spending his days either blindfolded, or with a large scarf cloaking his face. In fact, looking blind was the only thing that was not new to Kauru since he had lost his father all those years ago. Born with the typical perpetual vision loss common to Hashigaki clan members, Kauru had spent most of his childhood functionally blind. His other senses had compensated as a result, leaving him with a keen sense of hearing that had manifested into a near sonar-like ability to “see”, even in the worst conditions or when outright blindfolded. It had simply become easier for Kauru to utilize his other senses than to struggle through making sense of the often overwhelming and nigh-useless visual stimuli produced with his eyes open.

Years ago, Kauru had managed to defeat a demon in a musical duel, and in exchange, the demon had given him his eyes, which granted Kauru immense power. Not only had he regained his sight, but Kauru now had the ability to seemingly warp the fabric of reality, create and dispel illusions, and copy other shinobi's jutsu reactively, among other talents which still emerged with each passing day. But, like most things too good to be true, Kauru had also suffered greatly as a result. His father, who had brazenly attempted to defeat the demon first, was killed after failing to outplay the creature. Beyond that, each time Kauru utilized his new eyes, he felt a large pull on his chakra levels, leading to his decision to keep them covered whenever not absolutely vital. However, Kauru had decided to make an exception for this rare trip out to the Wind Country outskirts, and untied the scarf from his head, quickly wrapping it around his neck. Slowly, the Hashigaki opened his eyes and let the colors of Sunagakure sunset flood in.

His eyes were still adjusting the now fading light, and he raised a hand to block some of it out. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this whole “vision” thing… Kauru quickly channeled some of his chakra to his eyes and immediately the landscape came into focus.

After a few moments of soaking in the gorgeous sight, Kauru pulled out his shamisen and began to play. The melodies rang out in the twilight, echoing across the dunes, exalting the night to come. Kauru was startled by a rustling sound, causing him to stop his song short. The Hashigaki musician spoke softly into the vacant expanse, “Come out, come out, wherever you are,” and scoured the emerging darkness for signs of a guest, awaiting a response, or to learn if the noise was simply the wind.

A small ball rolls out from the bush and sits a few feet away. Its a dark grey and gold color, close to the color of the sand that surrounded Kauru. Why would a ball be all the way out here? Was someone else nearby? He didn't sense another around. If he listened closely, he could just barely pick up a shallow breath from the area of the bush. The ball just sat there for a moment, with no one coming to retrieve it. If he looked around, he was sure no one was around. He hadn't seen a soul for hours. He looked down back at the ball and it seemed...closer.

The small ball, was it closer, he couldn't be sure, it might have been an illusion. If Kauru looked around, he would still not see anything or anyone alive around. Upon examining the ball again....it was closer yet again, this time off the rock and in the sand. How did he miss it move, how didn't he hear it, what kind of trick was this? This prank, it was growing..actually probably interesting. If someone was able to fool his senses to such a degree, they must have been..quite dangerous actually. That of course was, if the ball was moving...

If he left it to itself, the ball would continue to sit their unmoving, though it would have felt like it was watching him... Examining him... Judging him. Anytime his eyes left it, it would appear to have moved a short distance closer to him. This game would make anyone antsy. Being all by themselves in the middle of this dangerous foreboding hellish desert.

A bug crawled out of the sand behind Hashigaki and started to walk before him, heading back and forth before the fire. It was a bumpy looking bug, about 1.5 inches long. It's shell glistening with the reflection from the fire. It's long legs would send a chill up some peoples spins, but it didn't seem dangerous. It took a break for a few seconds, and if Hashigaki looked up again, he would see that ball, ever closer, and now defying the pull of gravity as it was partially downhill and not moving. Something was odd about that spiky ball. It's appearance was like that of a very oddly designed caltrop, with ridges of spikes all over it. It appeared like it would be dangerious if someone tried to pick it up? Even with all it's ridges, the slant of the rock would have been just enough to cause it to fall.

What do we have here? How strange... Kauru thought, eyeing the curious scene before him. Kauru, as greedy and suspicious as ever, stood up in a fluid motion, aiming to display his confidence and intrigue in the situation.

Accordingly, the Sand shinobi began taking soft, careful steps toward the ball. For some reason, he felt as though it might be a trap, or at least a trick of some sort, so he kept on his guard.

Luckily, Kauru had already unveiled his demonic eyes, whose powers rivaled that of even the Uchiha clan's Sharingan. His eyes, however, had come with a much more pressing and perpetual toll, and they leeched his chakra any time they were opened. Occasionally, when the time called, Kauru wouldn't mind indulging them with the chakra they so rampantly and relentlessly feasted upon, and this moment was one such exceptional occasion.

He turned his gaze to the ball, scanning between it and the bush rapidly, attempting to discern anything he could about the situation at hand. Kauru quickly lurched forward, snatching at the beetle in front of him. If nothing else, he hoped it would be an ample display of his swiftness and awareness, perhaps deterring an attack against him.

The Hashigaki youth smiled kindly as he did so, and finally spoke with poise and conviction. "Good evening. I didn't expect company so far out here in the dunes. Come on, won't you come out and join me?" Kauru was unsure whom he was speaking to, if he was speaking to anyone at all, but he did his best to seem as though he did. His eyes still blazing with flickering emerald energy, and his ears sharply tuned to the expansive dunes around him, he awaited a reply.

"Awww...I wanted that beetle." The mysterious and ruffed voice came from straight ahead of him at around eye level. It was softly spoken to a degree, but seemingly close enough to be heard. It wasn't hard for Kauru to pinpoint it's location, it was practically right in front of her face, not to mention his incredible sense of hearing would have made short work of it. But even if with new site, it was still coming from a very odd source. Was, was the ball speaking? The small ball moved some and then spoke again, "Evening." The ball started to unfurl itself and the most peculiar creature appeared.

th

Were all balls really just animals curled up? No, it couldn't be. Well, he had been hard of seeing..no, no it couldn't have been, this was a special case for sure. The ball continued to pull apart until at the last moment it released it's tail from it's mouth, and a barbed lizard, the size of his lower arm stood, squatted, before him. "I came all this way...thinking that odd sound you were making was coming from a bug and to my surprise, it was...it was..well whatever you are." The lizard walked towards him, then raised it's head, peering at him with a sideways glance to reveal a singular eye brown and black in color. "But now that I see yo eat bugs too. Guessing that is how you attract them." The lizard spoke, insinuating he was going to eat the beetle. "It's actually quite smart really." The lizard was complimenting his cunning.

"I have never seen one of your...whatever you are around here. And your by yourself?" The lizard crawled down the rock and onto the sand, but kept it's distance from the creature. Enough that if needed he could run away. "Are you lost too?"

"Awww...I wanted that beetle." Kauru was startled at the voice, and even moreso considering its source. He strained his eyes to look closer, and focused intently on what the peculiar ball was saying. "Evening." Of all the things I've come across, this is easily one of the strangest. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the source of his befuddlement had been a lizard. Well, at least, at face value, it was. As far as he knew, lizards were no more capable of speech than a shoe or a spoon. However, as suspicious as the situation was, Kauru was never short on tact or proper manners, and he replied courtesly, "Good evening, my friend. It seems we've given each other a bit of a start." He smiled coyly and approached the lizard with calm, measured steps. He was surprised when the lizard continued their conversation.

"I came all this way...thinking that odd sound you were making was coming from a bug and to my surprise, it was...it was..well whatever you are." To Kauru's surprise, the lizard also moved toward him, peering out at him with piercing brown and black eye, twitching a bit as it surveyed him. It seemed it party felt a bit of the familiar tension reserved for meeting strangers, but it felt as though it was quickly dissipating as the duo conversed.

Again, the affable lizard spoke, "But now that I see you eat bugs too. Guessing that is how you attract them. It's actually quite smart really." Kauru was well trained in coercion, and it served him well as an ANBU. He had found that one could glean just as much information out of a kind interaction, whether it be with friend or unwitting foe, with a glass of ale and a hearty meal as he could with a night or two of surveillance and "extraction" techniques. It's a shame I don't know what the equivalent of lizard beer is... he mused to himself. However, avoiding becoming lost in his own thoughts, Kauru allowed the lizard to continue before speaking again.

"I have never seen one of your...whatever you are around here. And your by yourself? Are you lost too?"

And there it was. Kauru's coy, flabbergasted grin widened into a charming, toothy smile. He spoke in his warmest, most serene voice, letting his Hashigaki roots guide the notes as he spoke, almost creating a lullaby with his words. "As strange as it seems, I think you and I were meant to meet. As it happens, I don't really enjoy beetles of this color, especially not at this time of year. They don't really sit well with my palate." He leaned forward and stretched his arm outward toward the lizard, unfurling his clasped hand and softly rotating it it as the beetle crawled over his palm and the back of his hand. "Don't be shy. Take it. It is a gift from me to you."

Kauru sighed softly and focused his attention once more on the lizard. "And, to answer your question, yes. I am indeed alone, and I am a musician, among other things. Did you venture all this way by yourself?" He spoke alluringly and left his body language open, paying careful mind not to startle the small creature. For some reason, a sense of curiosity and paternal instinct had been piqued by the lizard's last lines. After all, it wasn't every day that one came across a talking lizard. Continuing, Kauru spoke once more"In any event, I am not lost. But if you're in need, I could serve as your guide and travelling companion. Where are we headed?"

The mans outreached limb, with the bug, extended towards the small spiked lizard. It's eye twitched towards the bug, then the man, then back at the bug as it tilted it's head directly towards it. The "bait" was overly tempting as the lizard walked towards him and Kauru held it still out to him. He walked towards the man and with a lash of it's tongue it picked the small bugger up and chopped away at it. "Olor' or not. Tis a ood' meal. I on't' have the slightest idea ut' anks'." The creature speaking in a jumble as it munched away.

As it finished chewing, trying to swallow the bug larger then it's own head, Kauru spoke. The word 'musician' was unfamiliar to the small creature, and it finished eating just as he started to speak again. "Really? You will help me? That would be great. I have been lost in these dunes for 4 colds. I am heading for home which is...." The lizard looked around, the fire taking his attention away then back into the distance, then the fire. "Towards the left of where the bigger ball of life rises, just not that far to it." The lizard seemingly speaking in codes to those not astute enough to understand. "Like maybe halfway to it? I think." The lizard headed near the fire to warm it's body to help digest. "I was out near my home looking for food, away from my family. They warned me not to go, but.... Well then a large bird picked me up and took me away. It took a while but I managed to get away from the evil bird and rolled away. My shell is stronger then any claw or beak."
