"Are you sure this is what you want?" Kyokuso's cousin asked. "It's really hard to master you know, would you not want to perhaps work on something else first?"

Kyokuso looked down at all the parts that was laid out in front of him. Some of it he was familiar with - very basic, core puppet bits and pieces that he had used to build his first puppet so long ago. Others were still puppet parts, but those he had never used before. Then there were parts that he had never, ever seen before. Traps he assumed, from the trigger mechanisms that he recognized. The idea was to incorporate the trap parts into a whole new puppet. Yeah... he really does felt like he was a bit over his head with all this.

But, he wanted to do it. If he wanted to be a successful puppet master, he needed to be able to work up complex puppets.

"Yes, I definitely would like to attempt this." Kyokuso finally affirmed. His cousin smiled, and the lesson began.

Kyokuso's cousin first began by teaching him the ways of building a more complicated puppet - complete with augments and all that. It was complicated at first, as Kyokuso learnt how to position the different puppet parts based on the different augments he would like to install. It was complicated at first, balancing functionality, aesthetics, and wieldiness of the puppet.

When it all finally came together, now it came to the hard bit - installing traps. Kyokuso's cousin explained that at least they were lucky traps were automatically compartmentalized. If it was any other weapon, it'd be so much more complex.

Kyokuso learnt of how to create holding compartments within the puppets, and how to install the mechanisms to reload his traps once they were used up. He learnt how to best set the traps to activate them. And finally, he learnt how to use his puppets to best trigger the traps. It was... fun. It also took him weeks. But he succeeded.

"Come on, do it!" Kyokuso's father bellowed.

"I can't, father, I can't!" Kyokuso responded, almost sobbing now. His father had requested to personally teach him the arts of battle, and at first Kyokuso had thought it would be simple training. Now though... it was terrible! His father wanted to train Kyokuso to strengthen his Genjutsu, and to best do that... had requested Kyokuso to use Genjutsu on his own father. Worse of all, Kyokuso had been requested to attempt his dominant Yamanaka power - the ability to layer Genjutsu on top of one another, forcing the opponent to take on a lot of illusory damage. "Father, I can't do it to you!"

"You fool! You will get nowhere if you can't even do it in such a safe setting. Listen to me! DO IT!" Kyokuso's father commanded once again.

Kyokuso closed his eyes and turned away. He just... could not do it. "NO!" He shouted, starting to grow angry at his father's request.

"You useless boy! Might as well have stayed weak and frail - at least then you'd have an excuse! Right now, you are just pathetic!" His father mocked.

"I. Am. Not!" Kyokuso replied, turning his attention back to his father.

"PROVE IT THEN!" His father re-iterated.

Arghhh Kyokuso thought, frustrated by his father. Fine then!

He went through the seal motions, and began casting every low rank Jutsu he knew on his father. He could see it right away - his father had dropped his guard to allow the Genjutsu to take hold, and now he was starting to suffer. Oh god, was his father in so much pain?

"What is this?" His father mocked once again. "This slight, pitiful tingling sensation."

Apparently not then thought Kyokuso once again. He allowed his rage to let go, and in the fit of anger, forced himself to push more Chakra into his Genjutsu, trying to tear apart his father's mind, trying to put him in more of a nightmare. He could see it now - his father was in quite a bit more pain than before.

"Yes! YES! That is it! That anger... channel it every time you use your Genjutsu from now on! Even in friendly combat, use your Genjutsu like you mean it!" His father commanded.

And that was it. That was when Kyokuso learnt how to really use Genjutsu.

Nimble Hands

Juggling two different things at the same time (figuratively) is hard, but Kyokuso had to eventually learn it. Originally, he could either only control puppets, or cast Genjutsu. Eventually, he learnt how to use his hands for different reasons - one for casting Genjutsu, and the other for controlling his puppets. It was complicated, but Kyokuso learnt to the focus, eventually.

It was hard to imagine at first, but when he understood how, it turned out to be very simple. Turns out, it began with him controlling a puppet with both his hands, and then shifting all his control over to his one hand. It did include some modifications of his puppets, so that originally requiring ten Chakra strings, it only requires seven strings, which he could then control all seven with five fingers. Strange and weird, but it worked.

Then, he figured how to make seals with one hand. Again, initially hard, but then it came to him. Some seals he can just ignore the parts from one hand. Some others, he could find alternative, one-handed seals to cast in their stead. Eventually, it worked out.

Jutsu Mastery

Kyokuso's dominant Yamanaka ability was the ability to layer Genjutsu, one on top of another. However, the problem with it is that it uses just so much Chakra. He grew tired every time he tried it. It was just sapping too much from him. And so, he went to his mother to ask for her advice. After all, as a Mednin, she has to use her Chakra so often there has to be a way to work through it.

His mother taught him how to conserve Chakra, to be able to utilize his Jutsus better. It was all about utilizing every bit of Chakra most efficiently, to not waste any bit extra as he molded it. It was like using any source of energy, being able to reduce the amount of exhaust produced, and also re-using some of the excess energy as well.
