Maikeru had been focusing in the wrong areas for his growth. While a hyper active, always moving nature was good, it was not needed what he needed to focus on at the moment. He needed to be a leader, someone that his fellow swordsmen could follow. And for that he needed to be calm, collected, serene. Eventually, when they gained trust in his leadership, he could afford to be more energetic is his leading, but for now a cool and calculated head was needed. In that regard, he spent much time meditating. He would spend hours trying to find his center, bring his heart rate to a controllable level, and more over, keep his energy contained until he needed to draw on it.

Spoiler: Replacing Fearless with Clarity

With a sigh, Maikeru leaned back in his seat. He had spent so much time running from his Uchiha heritage, without realizing it was one of the things that made him such a dangerous and hopeful shinobi to the higher ups of the leaf. Rubbing his temples he leaned his head against the wall. Fearlessness was to be commended in most cases, but lately, he had just made a rash fool of himself with it. He needed to take a step back, find clarity and reasoning in his methods. To that end, he spent more time practicing with his eyes. His Sharingan was getting closer and closer to evolving for a final time, and he needed to be prepared for that. The clarity that he once saw mental illusions with was failing him, and that did not bode well. So, he decided to use his failure as a growth opportunity for both himself and fellow students. He sat in on genjutsu classes, allowing himself to be a practice dummy, giving him more and more time to both identify and reverse genjutsu cast on him. Not the safest method of practice, but, he didn’t have time for safe. He needed results. He needed to be ready the next time the swordsmen were sent out.

In his hope for becoming a master swordsmen, Maikeru had been ignoring his fundamentals as of late. Namely his genjutsu and ninjutsu practice. In an effort to rekindle and retrain muscles that have long since stagnated he spent much time in quiet solitude, practicing with his Mangekyo Sharingan and his ability to use it to assault the mind of his foes. There was an old trick he use to use, where he would use his ocular prowess to trick his enemies into thinking they were taking more damage than they were, that their very bodies were being a lit by flames much hotter than he could produce. While he spent many of his free nights reading medical text, studying up on the newest techniques to use in the hospital, the majority of his freetime was dedicated to the art of field medicine. There were many reasons for this, but, the main one being his Medic in Training exam with Mikasa. He surprised even himself with his ability to quickly think, come up with a solution, and execute it given very limited resources. At the end of the day, the choice was beyond clear to him.

Genjutsu was a valuable tool for any Uchiha, even those who didn't dedicate all of their time to it. The sharingan was a unique kekkei genkei, even among the noble dojutsu's of the leaf. The ability to use their occular prowess to break through the majority of an opponents mental defenses before your chakra even touched them was a boon of untold proportions, especially to Maikeru. By inflicting a genjutsu onto a target, he found he was able to use that weakness to open them up to further damage from his kenjutsu, making them feel pain that didn't exist, even to the point of being unable to use unharmed limbs.
