He never tried to hurt anyone, just scare them, but one evening he 'practiced' on the wrong person. Ao chose his target, an out-of-towner who was leaving a restaurant late one night. It wasn't too long after his adoption, that Ao began pursuit of another life-long dream of his; to become a member of Kumogakure's ANBU.

It was always there, in the back of his mind, telling him that no matter how hard he studied, how much he practiced, or how many missions he completed, that he would never be good enough for his parents. The people that, so many years ago, left him at the entrance to Kumogakure to either be found by someone, or to die.
Ao was able to quite this voice by keeping himself busy, pushing it back as far as he could, mentally, but the moment he took any respite the voice would return. Quietly at first, but gradually becoming louder until the dark thoughts overwhelmed him.
“You are pathetic, nothing you will ever do will bring your parents back.”
“Do you really believe that the ANBU will let a nutcase like you join their ranks?”
“You will never cut it as a shinobi, quit now before you get yourself or your teammates killed.”
Ao sat alone in his room after a long day of training, and in a moment of weakness, allowed the voice in his head to grow louder until it consumed his thoughts. Even though his life had gotten better since joining the Yamamoto clan he still had moments where he was consumed by the dark thoughts emanating from his mind.
“You do not belong in this clan, they will never accept you.”
“The Yamamoto are using you, you are nothing more than a tool to them.”
“They only want to take advantage of you, betray them!”
Ao shook himself out of his stupor, he needed to find something to keep his mind occupied. He scanned his room for something, anything, that could provide him some relief. Ao had only recently moved into the small apartment provided by the Yamamoto clan, and what few items he owned were mostly still in boxes, and the thought of digging through the boxes this late in the evening gave Ao a headache. Ao turned his gaze towards the floor and decided to exercise in an attempt to block out the voice. First, Ao did push-ups, then sit-ups, then leg-raises. Ao completed several sets of 100 before giving up, exercise was not working. Maybe meditation then, it was not something that Ao was necessarily good at but it was all he could think of.
“You cannot even control your own thoughts; how will you ever make something out of yourself?”
“You cannot push me away, you cannot hide from the truth.”
“You are useless, no one cares about you, just end it!”
Ao sat down on the floor, legs crossed, and made his best attempt at meditation. The voice was steadily growing, so he began to focus on his breath. He did not change his breathing, at least he tried hard not to, but instead examined how he breathed. Instead of quieting his mind though, the voice in his head only became clearer and more insistent.
“Give up already, you cannot shut me up. I am you, the you that you hide from others, I am the real you.”
Ao had never really responded to himself, but this time he could not help himself.
“Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!” Ao practically yelled with his eyes still closed. Silence was the only response he received. There was something else though, it was a strange feeling that caused Ao’s skin crawl, that made Ao believe that someone was in the room with him. Ao slowly opened his eyes, only to be taken aback by what he saw. Before the boy was a figure both alien and familiar. It was a boy similar to Ao in about every aspect save one, purple shadows clung to the figure and wisped around its body like thick smoke hovering around the remains of a smoldering campfire. The shadow-enveloped boy before Ao stared back at him with dark, sunken eyes, and wore a menacing scowl on his face. The two stared at one another in silence for what felt like an eternity before Ao spoke.
“What…. Who are you?”
The shadowy figure began to speak the moment that Ao finished his sentence, its’ voice was eerie and familiar, although Ao still could not put his finger on what exactly was so familiar about the shadow before him.
“You really are an idiot, you do not even recognize yourself. You probably do not even recognize your own mind, how pathetic.” The shadow hissed.
Ao’s eyebrows arched up in surprise and his jaw dropped from the revelation. The shadow was right, it looked and sounded just like Ao. The boy took a step back, and the shadow followed. That was when Ao noticed something else. The room he was in was dark, and almost appeared as if it were surrounded by the same wispy shadows that surrounded the figure before him.
“I am not sure how you managed to get in here,” said the shadow, “but I sure as hell am not going to let you get out. I am going to lock you in here just as I have been locked in here for all this time. I have sat here and watched you sulk and bitch for far too long, it’s my turn to drive!” The shadow then dove towards Ao, who spun aside to dodge the shadow’s grasp. “Oh, so now you are a man of action, figures.” Growled the shadow, as he turned to face Ao once again. “It does not matter, you are in my world now. My world, my rules!” The shadow charged at Ao again, and this time instead of trying to dodge the attack Ao decided to fight back.
The shadow moved in towards Ao, outstretching its right arm in an attempt to grab ahold of Ao’s left arm. He moved aside and attempted to grapple the shadow from its left side but found that the shadow’s form was insubstantial. Ao passed right through the shadow, and in doing so felt an agonizing wave of cold wash over him where his body passed through the shadow’s. Ao gasped and tried to create distance between the shadow and himself, but the shadow was quicker. In the blink of an eyes the shadow was upon Ao, clawing at him and laughing a hideous laugh that would have made Ao’s skin crawl had it not already been affected by the shadow’s touch. The shadow plunged its right arm into Ao’s torso, and for a few terrifying moments Ao’s lungs refused to work. Then something that the shadow had said earlier fully registered with Ao.
“You really are an idiot, you do not even recognize yourself. You probably do not even recognize your own mind, how pathetic.”

Ao focused on clearing his mind of the terror that was afflicting it. He pushed away the fear of suffocation that had previously been clouding his mind. If the place he and the shadow version of himself were in was a part of his own mind, then the shadow version of himself should have less control than Ao. As Ao cleared his mind the shadowy mist that had surrounded the room began to dissipate. The shadow version of Ao did not notice at first, he was still focused on enjoying Ao’s suffering at his shadowy hands. That was, until the bright light Ao was manifesting in his own mind completely cleared the room out of the fog of shadows that had invaded. The shadow version of Ao realized too late what was happening and recoiled in fear and pain as the light that was emanating from the walls of the room began to close in on him.
Ao stood over the shadowy version of himself, it was now constrained by several rings of light, and examined it with the assistance of his Sharingan. The powerful dojutsu revealed nothing to Ao, the person he was looking at was not a flesh and blood entity. Whatever it was, it existed solely in Ao’s mind. Maybe the shadow had not been lying to Ao when it said it was a part of him. Maybe this shadow was a manifestation of the doubt and depression that had haunted Ao for the entirety of his life. But what did this mean for Ao? Could Ao exercise control over his shadow and use it to inflict pain, whether that be emotional, mental, or physical pain, on others through this shadow version of himself? Ao was not sure, and it did not appear that his dark self would answer any questions, but now that he had his shadow persona under control, he intended to find out just how far he could take this. Ao closed his eyes, and cleared his mind once again. This time he focused on pulling the shadowy persona back into his mind, placing it in a cage made of light within the ethereal crevasses of Ao’s own mind. Surprisingly, this worked, or at least it appeared to work to Ao. It felt like it worked too, whether or not Ao could put much trust in his feelings in regards to this sort of thing Ao would find out.
