“Skaven? What’s a skaven?” the boy asked, after requested an advanced briefing for reasons he won’t disclose an older man began to give him details on how a group of humanoid rat people were responsible for a multitude of raids against the country side. Tatsuo rubbed the back his neck and chuckled a bit, the thought of Ratmen attacking a village seemed absurd but someone was willing to pay for it so it was worth checking out.

Tatsuo was wearing his flak jacket over a large black shirt and pants. His headband tied tight to keep his hair out of his face, the symbol of Konoha shining bright. The boy had begun to think of home more and more as of late. Maybe it was the cold? Maybe it was the duty he felt to his country, he couldn’t pinpoint it but he had already started to get home sick.

There was plenty to be done here in Cloud though, he still spent plenty of time hanging out with Hira and Hoshi. His training with Kaji was going well, they had just recently got back from slaying a giant. Tatsuo was getting stronger and he could tell it. Even after his long absence he was making leaps and bounds, even closing the gap between he and Hoshi. But he would still have a long ways to go before that. Though even Tatsuo could tell the progress he was making, it made him more confident in the power he was gaining. No longer was he weak enough not to handle himself. There may be people who could beat him, but he was no longer going down without a fight. Even when he fought Kaen he managed to take quite a few high level abilities. Tatsuo cringed as he ran his hands up his arms he almost could feel the burns. They weren’t visible anymore, thankfully, Kaji’s lizard ointment made quick work of them but the mental scarring was enough. He knew he would have to get a lot stronger before he could beat someone like Kaen.

All of that had been going on as he was on the train waiting to arrive in the city of Bekarut. There was supposed to be a Ratman village encampment there and Tatsuo’s job was to clean it out. Easy enough he thought. It didn’t take him long to get settled in the place and he was quickly shown to his room as an esteemed guest. It was common for clients to try and butter up their shinobi since it’d be better for the person who is capable of killing whatever's bothering you be on your good side. Tatsuo was friendly enough and didn’t plan on killing anyone, no matter who they were.

It wasn’t long before he was out in the countryside on the trail of the rat men, they were said to live in giant burrows in the mountain sides. Creating a wood clone to help him look he stumbled upon a few wide looking caves that had the stench of disease inside them. However before he could enter he heard something marching up the path. Hiding behind a few rocks he saw a small platoon of ratmen, carrying a prisoner. The man seemed to be no older than Tatsuo, he was struggling and kicking yelling out obscenities. It wasn’t long before one of the ratmen smacked him with the blunt edge of a spear. The man let out a yelp of pain but grew quiet after that trying to avoid any further punishment.

They would have gotten away with the prisoner had Tatsuo not been there. As he watched them run up the path he sent his wood clone to stop them from the front, so he could flank from the bind. As they walked through a small walled in path Tatsuo’s wood clone stepped out from in front of the rocks and slammed his hands together. “Wood Style: Great Wooden Wall!” Out from the earth grew a sizable wall of strong oak. One of the ratmen gave out a call and they dropped the prisoner getting into a defensive phalanx position as they rushed the clone.

The real Tatsuo came in from behind, taking the prisoner and placing him in a Case of Life, to protect him from any stray attacks and also to heal up his injuries. The boy seemed scared of Tatsuo but seemed to trust him more than the ratmen. Unbounding him, he told him to stay put and he would be safe not to try and struggle from within. The man listened to Tatsuo and didn’t struggle despite his intense fear of the whole situation.

Slamming his hands down onto the ground he yelled once again “Wood Style: Great Wooden Wall!” and from the earth shot another large barrier, boxing in the rat men in with Tatsuo. In some foreign tongue of squeaks and hisses, they shouted at Tatsuo before producing a large green vial. As they popped the cork a disgusting aroma filled the air as green smoke billowed out. He knew he couldn’t get hit by that. After being thrown with scary accuracy, the vial broke in front of Tatsuo’s clone. Instantly it broke down into a mix of coughing and pulling at its throat. Tatsuo released the clone and it turned into a solid piece of wood that fell to the ground. Gritting his teeth he realized that this might be a little tougher than expected. He might have to use his special ability so early. The problem is he used it now, it means the rat men would definitely be aware of his presence. He could get swarmed by however many of these there were in the mountainside. Perhaps it would be best to retreat, he had saved the man, got some info.. If he ran now he could prepare for a better fight later and not risk his or the recently rescued man's life.

As much as he hated retreating it looked like the best option here. Dropping his case of life on the man, Tatsuo rushed over to him grabbing him before bouncing off the wall between the mountain leaving the rat men trapped in between his two barriers. He doubted the rat men would be able to figure out just how powerful wood ninjutsu was but quite a few people were capable of it. Though not many were capable of it to the great extent that the Kyoubaku was. He would need to hold his cards close to his chest for this one. Using his abilities whenever he had a chance would just result in them overwhelming him. What was he thinking there anyways running in, what? One vs Ten? Even if they were just rat men he has no idea what was going on. Imagine had it not been his clone that had been hit when that ghastly bomb, both he and the man would’ve probably died.

Tatsuo asked the man where he stayed and after some shaky directions he was returned home. The man offered Tatsuo a room in his house, not only because he felt like he owed him but he was worried the rat men might return. It was much closer to the countryside and would allow Tatsuo to get a better look at all hours of the day so Tastuo accepted his offer. Placing all of his equipment in the room he began to think of his plan of attack. They spoke in a language he couldn’t understand, used weapons he had no idea how they worked. Perhaps it wouldn’t be able to get through his thick wooden armor but would he really want to take that risk? He was no longer on missions where he could just recklessly go through things. He had to plan and plot, like a real shinobi, which was the bane of Tatsuo’s existence. He sat on the bed, hands together as he thought of what to do. He was horribly outnumbered, these mountains could house thousands if not tens of thousands. If any of them were as powerful as Tatsuo there would be no chance he wouldn’t be over run. However he wondered why they stayed inside their caves. It was possible they had military strength akin to a small army perhaps they were weaker than they looked? Or maybe they had a reason for staying..

A knock on the door interrupted his thinking as the same man came in with a plate of rice, fried veggies, and meat. Tatsuo took the rice and veggies but shook his head at the meat, saying he had lost most of his appetite in the fight and wanted to keep what he ate simple. Tatsuo knew the real reason is ever since that mission he could barely stand the smell of meat, just the chance he would accidently eat someone again it made him want to vomit just thinking about it. But ignoring those thoughts he scarfed down the food quickly. It wasn’t long for him to finish up and the man crossed his arms trying to help Tatsuo think. “Well they tend to raid at night, they captured me early this morning I think they were headed back. I don’t know what they were planning on doing with me, but i’m glad you came so I did not have to find out. I really am grateful and you’re free to use anything or ask me anything if you need help. My grandfather had some notes around the house speaking about these rat men. He disappeared years ago, we all thought he was going crazy saying he saw rat men, so we bought him a cat but he said they were giant rats.. I wish I believed him, and now he’s gone.. Do you think.. Maybe they captured him?!”

Tatsuo was sure of it, they had to be connected. “Can you read the notes to me? I’m not really great at reading Kumo... I’m from Konoha the dialect is drastically different.” The man luckily didn’t know much about language and went along with it. It took him about ten minutes to find the notes but he began to read it around Tatsuo. Nothing really struck as useful except something saying they were scared of bright lights. But that didn’t make sense.. Hadn’t he fought them during the day? In between speaking with the man Tatsuo realized yeah it had been day but the clouds overhead made the sun barely visible.. Perhaps they had a weakness to bright lights. It was worth something keeping in mind, he could head back to the city and buy some flash grenades but it also meant he might need to fight them during the day. That’s if they’d even come out. It would always be dark in the caves.

Over breakfast Tatsuo and his generous host discussed what they might be able to do against the Ratmen. The host who finally named himself as Isaki told him a lot about his life and how he was a simple woodsmen. Not really having any affinity for combat but strong enough to hold his own if he were attacked in normal conditions, and while one of these ratmen were weaker than the average human and much weaker than the average shinobi they travelled in packs. According to him they had been raiding the countryside for months at this time and only after the capture of an important politician's daughter were they finally considered a true plight to the city and the surrounding villages. However they still assumed it was just a small threat so one ninja should be enough or so they hoped. Tatsuo was supposed to be that hope, but he himself didn’t know if he was up to the challenge. While he had certainly grown as a shinobi he wasn’t sure if he could fight at such insurmountable odds. But his eagerness to help only grew with every tale of capture, death, or destruction at the hands of these ratmen.

After one particularly story Tatsuo had heard enough. “I’m not sure if I can beat them, I won’t lie to you. Maybe this will be too much for me but as long as I know it’s an issue I cannot leave this village to face any more pain. I’ll do whatever I can to stop them. Even if it takes all i’ve got.” he said scrunching his nose and clenching his fist as he prepared himself for the fight ahead. Isaki was impressed by Tatsuo’s speech and helped him prepare for battle. Taking inventory of all the items he had, smoke bombs, ninja wire, his sword, “The White Elk”, a simple but effective blade it had special properties which allowed it to cut through the unnatural but these beasts seemed, while evil in nature, they were still natural. So his sword would probably prove ineffective but a sword was still a sword. It might not cut through them like butter, but getting hit by any large metal object wasn’t particularly fun.

At the crack of dawn Tatsuo left the safety of Isaki’s abode and travelled back to the mountain ridge where he first met the rats. When he arrived he noticed his wooden walls had been clawed through, from both sides it seemed so there were definitely more of them. However as he walked he stepped on a twig, he instantly froze as he heard a small rumbling. The ratmen must’ve heard him. But how many? If the ground was shaking it definitely would not be a quick or easy fight but he had nowhere to run.

Before he knew it ten rat men had come from the cave each with wicked spears, they didn’t seem to be equipped with that ghastly gas he had seen before. Which seemed to make his clone nearly melt away as if it attacked life itself. Tatsuo clapped his hands together, sending a ring through the valley as he shouted out a small roar to motivate himself. Out from every inch of his skin grew a large wooden armor that was not only tough but mobile allowing him to keep up in battle. Taking on his signature defensive stance he rushed into battle as he avoided not only spears but the nasty claws of the ratmen. He managed to make quick work of the a few of the footmen as these rat probably assumed Tatsuo was just a simple travelled who had travelled too. A fatal mistake, because Tatsuo was taking no chances with them. As one aimed and tried to shoot him with a crossbow, he formed a quick hand sign and smashed him with a giant wooden hammer.

It wasn’t long before reinforcements arrived. If they all remained this easy Tatsuo could probably fight on forever but he doubted that it would stay this way. Wave after wave came after the boy as they tunnelled out from their burrows and he made quick work of the last just like he did the first. After a while it seemed like there numbers thinned until he had sent them all back with their tails behind their legs. Tatsuo was going to chase them back into their caves and see just how many there were before he heard more rumbling from the cliff side. From the biggest cave came a large siege weapon armed by many rats. Tatsuo’s heart dropped as the noticed the green death gas as the projectile. One hit by that stuff and he would be out for the count. They were smart enough to not only make spears and other tools, but weapons of siege and war. Perhaps they had more planned than it seemed. Could there be a whole army of them under this mountain? He hadn’t had much time to think before the first cannon had fired. HE would have to find someway onto the cliff, because now it was raining death, literally. Plants fizzled and dried up immediately upon contact with the deadly gas. Tatsuo wondered what it would do to him if hit but he’d rather not find out. Without missing a beat a wooden close protruded from his back and helped him fight. The clone slammed it’s hands onto the ground creating a large wooden tendril under Tatsuo’s feet giving him the momentum to send him flying towards the siege engine. As they were reloading they tried to protect their weapon but Tatsuo had created another large wooden hammer and crushed the metal contraption. The rats scurried back into their caves but Tatsuo was on the chase. He ran into the dirty cave and was immediately met with a stench he would never forget. It was absolutely the worst thing he ever smelled, it was like a middle school locker room met a sewage dump.

Grabbing his nose and pinching it closed he was almost overwhelmed by the stench. After a few minutes of coughing his eyes watering and feeling like he was going to die he finally adjusted to the stench. But he realized that he couldn’t fight forever at one hundred percent down here. The rats would have the advantage but he needed to press the offensive. He couldn’t just wait on the defensive until they overwhelmed him. They weren’t aware he was here yet so he had time. He would have to prepare a trap to fight them.

There was not a lot of light in the cave but the occasional torch provided him all the vision he needed to set up his next move. He created a small wood wall then used a transformation jutsu on it to make it look like the rocky surface of the cave as he sat down and began to collect his natural energy. He would need every ounce the mountain could provide him if he was going to be able to fight if he was getting overwhelmed. A low hum emitted from his mouth while he could feel every living thing in the area provide him with small bits of their life force. As much as they were willing to provide, and as a champion of nature some things were willing to give as much as he needed. He could feel the power surging through his veins. The wrath of nature.

Standing up feeling refreshed he sprinted down the cave, keeping his eyes out for any rats that might jump him. It wasn’t long before he approached a small platoon and instantly rushed into battle, sliding down onto his knees he ducked under one of their lance swipes. A quick punch to the stomach made quick work of that one. And a couple dozen of them seemed to rush out of this one hallway, all equipped in spears and assorted weaponry. Charging him full on, they were stuck and he gave off a smirk. Small hallways weren’t the best place to fight him like that. “Time to use that technique..” he said under his breath. He had been practicing with the Rasengan since he was able to learn it, but he had mastered it into his perfected Rasengan. From his hand rose a giant green Rasengan. “GREAT FOREST RASENGAN!” He threw it into the hallway sending the rats flying as he rushed past them. Trying to get to their leader.

Before he knew it he was in combat with what he assumed to be the ratmen’s leader. Dressed like a samurai he struck at Tatsuo with his wicked steel blade. Tatsuo lifted a wood covered arm to trap the blow inside it. He followed up with a suckerpunch that sent the rat flying. But he wasn’t going to go down that easy. They both jumped into the air and clashed, a kick here, a punch there. The fight really seemed to be heating up as the two fought with all their might. For every blow Tatsuo managed to land the Rat-samurai did too. After a long bout of combat Tatsuo emerged victorious and all of the rats ran and scurried away. He sustained plenty of injuries though. After a long trip back to Isaki’s house where he nursed his injuries back to health. He thanked the man for his help, Isaki thanked him for getting rid of the rat menace. Tatsuo grinned and nodded before heading back to Kumogakure to go off on another wild adventure! Despite the oddness of that one, he was excited to continue his adventures around the world. There was only one way he could become a powerful ninja and that was through experience. Every time he fought a new enemy, every time he bested a new challenge he got one step closer to becoming the most powerful shinobi he could be.

To protect the Leaf, Cloud, and his brothers in the Blazing Spirit he would need to be strong. Strong enough to face any challenge great or small. That is Tatsuo’s ninja way. His nindo.

By the time he returned to the village it was dark and he went straight for his home. Waving to Kaji who was sitting watching TV, he went to his room and began to undress. As he went straight for the shower, he really needed to get that stench off him before he could fall asleep. After what felt like a few hours of scrubbing in between his toes he finally got to the point where he felt clean enough to call it a day. Hoping under his covers he quickly drifted asleep, dreaming of his next adventure. Hopefully something that wouldn’t smell so bad, and not involve any rats. That’d be nice, wouldn’t it.

Mission Complete!
