It is no hidden truth that Saki, despite his youth, was a patient man. Whether it was the nature of his Oshiro bloodline or the nurture of his shinobi upbringing was not clear... but in all honesty, does it really matter? Perhaps it was one or the other, or perhaps it was a combination of the two. Perhaps it was neither. The fact remained that his patience was above that of the average person.
However, he could only take so much of Rirakkusu.
No offense to him, but Saki could only take so much of what he considered stupidity. His constant banter would probably be fine, if Saki weren't stuck with him for days on end. Since they were on an out-of-village assignment, though, they were spending all twenty-four hour of the last three days together. He'd had quite enough of that noise.
During their last rest break, they decided to set up camp for the remainder of the evening. Ri had chosen to turn in early, and Saki, seizing the opportunity for some time away from his louder counterpart, decided to take a walk through the mountains and collect some ingredient he would need for making his medicinal blood pills slightly more edible.
The blood pills...
Saki almost instinctively coughed at the thought of them. Speaking of his coughing, it was time for him to take another one. They tasted absolutely terrible, but, unfortunately, they were absolutely necessary for his survival right now. And even then, he might not make it. It had been one week since the fight with the Oenothera biennis.
One week since he was handed his death sentence.
If everything went well, he had another five weeks he could survive, but until then, he was dedicated to making the most of what time he had left. Ideally, he would just sign up for as many mission as he possibly could before his time came, that way, if he couldn't find a solution to his parasite issue, then he would at the very least have done his best for Kumogakure.
Saki sighed, which turned into another cough. That cough turned into another cough, and that cough escalated until he vomited up a sick display of tangled vines and stomach acid. He took several seconds to catch his breath before taking one of the symptom-suppressing blood pills from his pouch and popping one into his mouth. He found relief almost immediately after he broke the pill with his molars.
Saki collapsed into the loving embrace of a tree that had obviously been affected by krumholtz, a growth pattern caused by growing too high in elevation. Essentially, an otherwise healthy plant grows stunted and wild due to growing just below the elevation at which plants can no longer grow, giving off a twisted look, like it belonged in the haunted forest of a fairy tail. Once the plant grows taller than that elevation, it turns violently to continue growing, distorting it to conform to that limit at which it cannot surpass. Looking around, Saki noted that every tree in the area had the same stuntedness. He thought it was a rather depressing allegory for his otherwise healthy life. A man of only twenty-seven, his life going well... and then his hit that growth level. Now it's mutated into something disgusting.
From where Saki sat, he could actually see the entirety of the valley of the lightning country. It was a rather clear evening , especially for the area surrounding Kumogakure, which was strange. Somewhat somber, but clear nonetheless. Saki closed his eyes and let his mind clear of everything he was thinking of.
He sat there for at least an hour before he opened his eyes again. It was darker now, though he could still see well. The ground beneath him had made his legs and butt freezing cold. His arms were numb, and his nose felt nonexistent. Slowly breathing out, and seeing his breath, he knew that it was far too cold for him to stay out here too much longer... but he didn't particularly care right now. He just looked out over the dark valley without care.
"What have I become? I am nothing. I'm done. My life is over. My parents named me "Hope," and yet I can't stop my own death. The Oshiro clan dies with me... if only I had more time. If only..."
Before he finished speaking his mind into the expanse of nothingness before him, he felt a certain wetness on his cheeks.
And suddenly, he realized he had been crying for a long time.
