Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

She wasn’t free, not really.

The freedom of her entrapment of three years within a Kami’s dream realm was but one layer of the prison her body suffered, the other two were a creeping madness that, while had been cured for now, would come back. The other was a virus slowly waking up inside of her body now that she was free of the fae suppression. Both things needed to be cured immediately, but neither were cures she could simply pluck out of the air.

For the first, at least, there was some serendipity. Ryuu Tama, scourge of her clan and son of the man who had cursed them with the Madness, had come to Kumogakure of his own volition. She had already surmised through chakra theory alone his blood could be used to inoculate against the curse via some rare herbs. There were plants capable of drawing out the raw chakra essence from a person’s blood, allowing it to be harvested from the fruits the vines produced. Taking that fruit, boiling down the pure essence, and then injecting it could at least prevent the ever lingering terror of her clan’s waking nightmares.

However, there was no way Tama had enough blood to spare. The plants itself were exceedingly rare as well, but, that wasn’t entirely a problem for Rei anymore. It was ironic, considering her past, that she be so adept with chakra now to a point of obtaining a rare power. She could grow plant matter of any kind within moments over the years it naturally took the fruits to bloom upon their vines. Drawback was that doing so fed the chakra hungry plants her energy as well, which would no doubt make distilling Tama’s more of a chore than necessary. It almost seemed like it would be easier to just let them grow naturally than influence their sprouts.

The man claimed to have something that might change all of that though. Reading the reports on his interrogation, which had been far more complicated to get a hold of now than it had three years ago, were quite enlightening. Upon his possession was a Ryuu Weapon; specifically, the one his father had found and turned against the clan in the madness it afflicted him with. Tengokai was dead and gone, but not unreachable.

Shortly after Rei had returned to Kumogakure with Shiro, and at least three weeks of rest and rehabilitation until she finally came to terms that this was, in fact, not, another dream; she began working immediately. The Kami’s Delight left something altered inside of her body after leaving in her death, and that was the augmentation of the chakra coil within that allowed it to hold up the dream realm. Blessed with an abundance of energy she hadn’t had before, the ex-Sennin turned away from her previous work as a spy master, and instead followed in the footsteps of her best friend; something she had secretly desired her whole life.

Passing the medical exams were a breeze. 90% of the knowledge she had already researched in finding a way to augment flesh with machine cleared that, and the other 10% she could easily guess at correctly. Having already been a student of Kitsune in her teens, she had something of a golden ticket when it came to practicing medicine. However, her plans to enter the medical field hadn’t been entirely to aid the living; a darker side to clung to that title she had grabbed withe ease.

Resurrecting the dead was not incredibly taboo in their society, and that was her major plan. At least, it wasn’t for high level shinobi. The Vault had more than enough tomes on the subject to fuel her curiosity and then some. In a fortnight, the emerald haired shinobi burned through the largest of the tomes before she came to wall that would require practice before she could continue learning. Pulling chakra into a corpse to bring life into it was only a single part of the process, and it wouldn’t produce the effect she sought.

Starting with small animals and working into more complex creatures, she gently zombified and then killed multiple creatures as she worked her way up towards humans. Getting human corpses was a bit more of a pain these days due to the new structure of life Kitsune had set for the nation. People didn’t die quite as easily as they once had, and their cold storage for corpses that didn’t possess important shinobi traits were very low. A Rei from a previous time would have simply gone and procured her own bodies to experiment on, but now she had someone who kept her balance.

Shiro was there to make sure that her dark research didn’t go to her head. He recognized immediately how bad the plan she had to save her clan could turn out, and always pushed for a measured learning experience no matter what her impatience demanded. He was a pillar of stability to her clan’s crude madness, and it kept her from falling into the same pits her cousin had long ago dove into willingly.
Do you want to become Tama?” Such a line easily broke any argument she had to keep pushing her research, and having just recently beat the clan’s madness with his help, she had no desire to fall to it again so soon.

It didn’t mean she wasn’t any less frustrated by the lack of speed in her plans.

Moot point, though it was in the end. She still needed Kumogakure to be done with Tama enough that she could talk to him and collect the Ashura Blade; a weapon notorious for madness and eating souls. Within, she believed Tengokai’s soul remained. If she could just pluck it out…but, again, it was a moot point. Until she could successfully reanimate a human corpse, Rei couldn’t finish her studies enough to do much else with it. So, while she sat on the waiting list for fresh corpse, Rei turned her attention to the other, problem vexing her body; the Lycan virus.

In her large home within the Ryuu Compound, the woman had a lab commissioned so that she could work away from the hospital; just in case she wolf’d out or the madness came creeping back in. The further away from the general populace, the better. Her own home in the compound was bordering the edge of the Dark Forest as well, which gave her an exit stratgey to protect her clan as well. Within it’s white walls and overly clean floors the woman sat on a stool with her green hair tied into a half bun/half ponytail as would allow. She was staring down into a microscope. The slide she had under the lens contained her own blood, with the virus clearly still dormant but belligerently there. Next to her where a number of potted plants. They had all grown to a size that belied their pots, meaning she had forced grown them with her new chakra, and before each one was a vial of condensed essence.

Rei sat up, taking a pick colored solution before a plant first in the row of four, and drew a bit of fluid from it with a dropper before dripping a single glob of fluid onto the slide with her blood. Moving back in, she observed the virus in her bloodstream waking up and attacking the new compounds, before turning black and causing the sample to go up in a small blue flame. With a sigh, she sat back up and turned to a nearby whiteboard that had a multiple lines of math followed by an equal sign pointing to the mathematical compound of the distilled essence of that plant. She erased that bit.

Rei had sent word to the Raikage to aid her in this, but hadn’t waited. She had no desire to just simply rely on a friend when instead they could combine their knowledge to come up with an actual cure that would potentially even revert these creatures back to their original forms. Though she had sought the cure in a small selfish goal, her aim was to cure it entirely. If anyone could do it, the combined scientific might of Kitsune and herself most certainly was a possibility.

Kairen wandered along the quieter streets of the Seki District, his gaze shifting between the ordinary and subtly extraordinary. As a clanless shinobi in a realm defined by long established legacies of the clans, he maintained a careful distance from the passersby, his mind already cataloguing the local small animals; a stray cat slipping silently into a narrow alleyway, a cluster of birds pecking at scattered seeds, and even the intentional crawl of an earthworm disturbed by the morning dew. His past experiments with small animals had imparted a wealth of knowledge; every creature was a representation of life's intricate design, each offering a lesson in vulnerabilities and fleeting vigor.

Strolling beneath the soft glow of lamps and accompanied by the gentle murmurs of early market-goers, Kairen's inner monologue unfolded as a quiet presentation of his scientific detachment. Every minute twitch, every subtle tremor in the environment held secrets waiting to be untold. In this district, renowned for its sprawling clan complexes and vibrant market stalls, this everyday scene was infused with hidden narratives; stories of lineage, legacy, and the delicate rhythms of human life.

For Kairen, this Seki District was more than just a wealthy residential area; it was a living lab. With no ties to a clan, his outsider's perspective granted him a mysterious ability to observe without prejudice, to document without interference. As he moved through the district, his focus remained steadfast on the subtle interplay between nature and the constructed world around him. Each step was a calculated move in his ongoing quest to decode the complexities of life, where every interaction, no matter how seemingly insignificant; added to the variety to his understanding.

Time was a funny thing. Ever since Rei first contracted the lycan virus, Kitsune had been devoting much of her already limited spare time to developing a cure. She was sure if the general populace knew what kinds of projects, chemical and otherwise, she'd stashed away on the 70th floor of the Torre Empirea's central building, one floor above her office, they'd be surprised to say the least. One of the projects in question was cultivation of, and experimentation on, the lycan virus. If it could be harnessed, it could give willing recipients an edge in combat, but before they got to that point, a foolproof cure needed to be made first, and it was getting closer with every passing day of experimentation, but it was still a ways off. And with Rei's return, it had to be prioritized more than other projects as the woman was still afflicted by the virus.

Fortunately, it seemed that Rei had begun doing research on her own, so maybe if the two pooled their combined knowledge, they could make a cure work. It'd be like the old days, where they'd work together on projects, but this time, it was a matter of life and death. Rei had been a good friend to Kitsune, best friend even, and she'd be damned if she let her die because of a virus. She'd already lost too many people to the virus, and she wasn't about to lose her best friend to it. One of the things Kitsune had discovered was that the lycan virus seemed to feed on chakra, and that was why it was so hard to cure. It was like trying to cure a virus that fed on blood, but the blood was the only thing keeping the host alive. But maybe, just maybe, a solution of pure unkeyed chakra, mixed with something else, could be used to starve the virus out of the host's system. It was a long shot, sure, but at least it was a shot.

Kitsune grabbed two storage containers with unkeyed chakra at the highest degree of purity she'd managed to make so far, and put them into a foam-lined briefcase, closing it up and locking it before heading out the door to Rei's residence. Being the Raikage had certain privileges, and in this case it meant being able to essentially just glide from the spire of the Torre Empirea all the way down to the Ryuu clan compound, landing in a courtyard with a soft thud. Kitsune was sure there'd be surprised looks from the others residing there, but Kitsune paid them no mind, instead heading to Rei's residence and knocking on the door, briefcase in hand, ready to get to work like in the old days. While waiting for a response, Kitsune thought back to the days when she and Rei had been working together on projects, and how much she missed those days. She hoped that they could get back to that, and that Rei would be cured of the virus soon.

The knock at her front door jolted the scientist from her current algebraic formula. With a squeak of surprise, she turned her red eyes towards the exit of her lab. It would lead into a hallway, moving towards the living room, and then to the door being banged on. She had requested from her clan absolute peace in this trying time so, Rei could only wonder who had the gall to interupt her work. Might be the local Ryuu menace. A kid with vivid blue hair who had taken to pranks lately, born to Ichiro and Tatsume who lived closer to the entrance of the compound. His favorite one was knocking on doors and hiding to jump out and spook people. That said, this kid had also gone out of his way to avoid Rei’s house after his first prank. She hadn’t even done anything, just opened it with a hello. Something about her had spooked the fun right out of his adventure and he never said another word outside of screaming and running away. The medical shinobi couldn’t help but wonder if it was in her complexion of death and red eyes…

…well at least Shiro wasn’t scared of her.

There was a small pit of hope that the kid had got his guts back to prank her again. Even if she had requested ultimate peace, she still didn’t like the idea of her own family being afraid to even approach her…even if that was exactly what she was dealing with lately. They had never elected another head of the clan while she was away. The Elders outright refused any canidate that had tried to step forward, stating that Rei would return as prophesied. It had sown some discontent among her more powerful/influential members. Turning to poke and prod at death itself with her new studies, abandoning the Main Branch for Medical, and pretending her absence had never happened was clearly rubbing some family the wrong way. Little choice that she had though, there was important matters to attend to.

Standing up from her rolling chair, the green-haired twig stretched and cracked the lower bits of her back. She then padded barefoot down the front door before running a finger down the door frame with a jolt of chakra to undo the locks. The entire front of her house could withstand a large explosive, and no one was getting past it without at least a large amount of chakra to blow down things. One by one, the locks clicked off before loosening the door from the frame so that Rei could twist the knob and pull it open.

The sight of her red-head friend elated a certain part of her heart. Warm and bubbly, it shot a beautiful feeling throughout her limbs that caused her to act before thinking, reaching out to grab and pull the Raikage into a hug,
Kitsune!” she exclaimed before releasing the shinobi leader, “It’s good to finally see you when I’m not laid up in a bed! You finally get time away from that schedule of yours? I assume you must of have gotten my…” her tone saddened a bit, but seeing the dragon-lady was still exciting enough to beat back the depression of her currently incurable disease, “…message. Come! Come, I have a lab already built and running!

Rei cleared herself of the walkway so that Kitsune could enter as Rei quickly padded back towards the lab. She knew that the fellow scientist would rather get right to work rather than enjoy simple pleasntries. She was, a nation’s leader after all. The woman’s time was very precious, and the fellow scientist would be damned to waste it on tea.

Though a cup of tea did sound great.

============================================================

The guards posted outside of the Ryuu clan compound were, by nature, a peaceful type of protector but even they noticed something odd about this kid constantly wandering around the Seki district. It had been decided not to bother any of Kumogakure’s shinobi unless it was warranted, but after it was clear the Student wasn’t interacting with any of the nobility living in that area; the Ryuu’s protectors had grown worried. After all, it wasn’t a far fetched idea for assassins to be coming for Rei’s head. Even from within their own clan there was something of a dislike for the scientist, but most of them waived it off as fools who were upset they weren’t able to power grab when a supposed vacuum had presented itself.

Today when Kairen appeared in the Seki district, one of the two guards stationed at the Ryuu clan’s entrance couldn’t help but let curiosity get the better of him. He stepped away from his post, frozen ground crunching beneath his feet until he got onto the paved walkway to reach out a friendly hand. It moved to tap the Student on the shoulder,
Hey…what are you doing here?

On seeing the door open, and Rei standing there, Kitsune grinned, giving her friend a big smile that screamed "I missed you, you dork!", only to get pulled into a hug right away which Kitsune returned with gusto. It'd been far too long and Kitsune had definitely missed her friend. "I did! I also brought some things I've been working on while you've been gone, and then bedridden. It's been my highest priority to develop a cure." she said, stopping herself from getting too into it before they'd gotten to the lab. After all, most of these things weren't for the public to know until a success had been reached.

As they headed towards Rei's lab, Kitsune looked around, taking in the structure Rei'd been holed up in for the past while. "Well, I've told my secretary to hold all calls, and reschedule meetings for as long as need be. She knows to only contact me in an absolute crisis. So how about a cup of tea before we get into the meat of things, hm?" she asked with a chuckle, knowing full well that Rei would be up for that just as much as Kitsune herself was. Kitsune retrieved a small cannister from her suit jackets inner pocket and held it towards Rei. It was full of the usual blend they had when sharing a pot of tea at Kitsunes office in the Torre Empirea.

Once they'd reached the laboratory, Kitsune placed her briefcase down on a workbench and opened it, revealing the two liquid containers within, both containing the highest purity unkeyed chakra Kitsune'd ever managed to refine, before explaining her line of thought to Rei, including the part about where it seemed that the virus fed on chakra. "So as you can probably imagine, I'm thinking that if the unkeyed chakra can be used to essentially entice the virus to feed off of that - and not the usual chakra found within the body - it'd essentially starve off once the unkeyed stuff runs out." she elaborated, hoping Rei followed her line of thinking without issues.

The returned hug elected a small squeal of joy.

It felt so surreal being able to actually touch the redhead again. Kitsune was the big sister she never had and Rei often dreamed of the secret dragon while whisked away. Always just but a claw out of reach the woman had failed so many times in her dreams to just miss saving her during those endless nightmares. The moment they released one another, Rei subtly reached down to pinch her arm hard to make sure she was still in reality; a habit she wasn’t going to break anytime soon judging by the small bruises on her forearms.

The insistence of tea over work brought a small elation to Rei as her eyes widened in some small excitement before darting into the kitchen. A moment later she returned with an entire tray of hot water, two cups, and a small box of assorted teas. They weren’t anything fancy quite yet - the new couple had yet to decide upon their favorite teas just yet. Her old collection had to be tossed out for the mold growing on them, which had brought much sorrow to the emerald haired beauty; at least a handful of them were limited edition from the Shinrya’s plantations themselves.

Of course, in her excitement to enjoy tea with Kitsune again she had completely forgotten that the Raikage wasn’t one to come empty handed. Taking the canister she opened up the top and sniffed gently of the brew within. The scent overwhelmed her memories. Rei’s favorite blend, a rare collection of herbs and leaves that made for a blend known only to Kitsune and those she deemed worthy to share it with. Rumors swirled that the tea was so good it alone had secured diplomatic alliances with certain noble clans. Rei drained at least three cups of it, catching up to a friend she hadn’t seen in far too long.

Once the tea had been shared and their minds relaxed, Rei showed Kitsune to the lab she had built up. As Kitsune revealed another mysterious canister and the logical gist of her hypothesis, Rei dragged around two whiteboards. The first already had her formula on it, the second one was blank. Based on Kitsune’s work, she began to write down the mathematical sides of the chemistry that contained but came quickly to a stopping point - which was she had no idea the significance of a pure distilled chakra base.

In theory, it was just raw human energy. Unaspected, living separately as a living entity with no face. The very idea was mind boggling and she stared at the silver jar full of the stuff with awe. Rei could only begin to fathom how the Raikage had managed to pull that out at all. Plants? Technology? Freaking magic?

The idea is there, for sure. The whole virus feeds off of a normal chakra coil, corrupting and converting it until it becomes a stable environment for it to live in. The process of that happening results in the wolf-beasts we call Lycans. So in theory, if we could convince the virus to feed off a chakra that does not change, cannot, change…then yes. Eventually it would starve as simply as a human would trying to live entirely off lean meat. The only issues I’m hearing is finding a way to inject that inside someone without a): it blowing them up; or b): without the body naturally rejecting the chakra or attuning the energy to the coil’s natural circadian. Then there is also c): how do we convince the virus to eat this instead of that….hmm…well, now…actually.

The exact formula of the pure chakra itself wasn’t known to Rei, but, that wasn’t necessary to produce a cure. Kitsune had crafted the stuff herself so no doubt knew exactly how it fluctuated into properties. That left to to the two of them to figure out a way to tempt it into the path they wanted. Rei went back to her own board and reviewed the notes, math, and then picked up a journal with the rest of her research. It hadn’t been very long at all since she started in on curing herself again, and the bundle of papers were already nearly full of chicken-scratch. After a moment of silent muttering she let out an “ah-ha!
Well, I think I have question C figured out now. Part of the cure I was working on already focused on tempting the virus away from my coil and towards the cure I was trying to feed it - which kept resulting in total system death. Getting the virus to focus on something else inside the body isn’t hard; it just needs a temptation. It’s drawn to things with high proteins, so, we just need to find a type that keeps your stuff mellow enough to not destroy whatever we inject it into….and then, ya know…also keep it mellow in general. I have a few herbs on hand I’d like to try…

…and so began the research to cure one of Kumogakure’s most notorious diseases…
