It had been several months since Kato's meeting with Kimijun the giant Doberman leader of the canine contract. In that time the boy had grown in strength considerably, and was much more confident in himself. He hadn't seen the Doberman again, nor any other members of the pack that he had since become a part of, but somehow he could feel their presence with him. In the dark lonely nights Kato could almost sense that they were never far away, like a protective eye was watching him. A howl in the dark no longer brought a sense of foreboding and alarm into the boys heart, but he found now that it somehow calmed him. Like he knew that it meant he had a place where he belonged, and a family that would protect him if he ever needed him.
It was during his time in the desert, searching desperately for the hidden Sand village while the sun slowly baked his body and mind, that he first discovered the truth of what Kimijun had gifted the stocky teen. He didn't know what made him do it, on that cold desert night. He had been without water for days, and his body had virtually no energy left. He knew he was going to die in the desert, his body to be buried in the sands of time and never found again.
Yet the howl of a coyote in the distance gave him hope. It lifted his spirits, yet at the same time made Kato feel like he already had the answer to his own survival... he just had to reach for it. "Draw your blood with the ancient fang," he thought, remembering the words Kimijun had spoke so many moons ago. And then his body moved, as if on its own, bringing his thumb, of the hand he had signed the scroll with, to his lips. He bit down, breaking through the skin enough to draw a small bit of blood. he placed the same hand down on the sand and summoned what little strength he had left.
A cloud of smoke appeared out of nowhere, and when Kato looked up, he saw that his hand was now resting gently on the head of a small puppy, sitting there and happily wagging his tail. "Wh-What the?" Kato began, but was interrupted by a bark from the tiny beast. The creature grabbed hold of Kato's sweater and began tugging at the chubby boy until finally he got up off the ground. The puppy sniffed the air continually, leading Kato on, until he brought the teen to an oasis. Kato gulped ravenously at the water, shoveling fistfuls of the cool liquid into his mouth as fast as he could. Finally he succumbed to his own exhaustion, passing out on the edge of the small pond. When he awoke, the puppy was gone, but Kato knew, the pack had just saved his life.

Appearance: Tafu is an averaged sized English bull dog puppy, though as he grows eventually he will become roughly the size of a saint Bernard.
Personality: Most of the time Tafu is a generally lazy fellow. Like most puppies he has bouts of hyper-activity, and is prone to get overly excited in the right circumstance, but generally he prefers to just lounge around and hang out. He is incredibly close to Kato, but at the same time takes pleasure out of annoying and disobeying him. The quickest and best way to get a task completed is to bribe Tafu with food, one of the large reasons why Kato and him have become close, since they both love snack foods (and Tafu tends to find that Kato has the tastiest snacks he's ever had). Still, when the time comes Tafu is fiercely loyal, although a tad cowardly, and though he shy's away from a fight, if pushed hard enough, Tafu will put on a mean face and put his 'best bark forward' in order to protect his packmates, especially Kato.
Additional Info: Tafu was born shortly after Kato signed the Canine contract, and was 'assigned' to Kato personally by Kimijun, since the Doberman sensed Kato had suffered a hard life, and felt the friendship between him and Tafu would prove to make both boys stronger in the long run. it was Kimijun that manipulated events when Kato stumbled upon the summoning jutsu, and sent Tafu to guide the boy to water. Currently Tafu is only capable of a minimum amount of speech (like a 2-3 year old human would). Tafu is familiar with Kato's scent, to the point he could follow the boy's scent days after he had gone if need be.
