They had come again.
It was that time of the month when the poor and destitute were gathered together in nights of drunken exchange. Someone had clearly heisted a large quantity of alcohol somewhere and as a result not only were many people intoxicated, many dangerous people were intoxicated.
As any child who had been raised in Migoya’s situation knew, this was the time you hid.
Crouching inside the walls of the flimsy abode the 7 year old had fashioned from an empty metal drum and an old blanket he had stolen from somewhere, Migoya shivered - partly from fear but mostly from the cold outside. His stomach started to rumble, and Migoya grew concerned that one of these ‘adults’ would hear him.
He tried to remember the lessons that he had been taught earlier that week at the academy. Breathe. He hated going there - the other children made fun of his clothes and of Mikki, not knowing his circumstances, but at least he was a quick study. Breathe. The lesson he had just been taught was fo chakra control.
“Imagine your body is like a bucket, and your tasks is to ‘feel’ the water in that bucket”. What a stupid analogy, Migoya had thought at the time. It was far better to center yourself on the earth, breathe, and become centered. From that center would come clarity and chakra.
Migoya breathed in slowly and as silently as possible, hearing approaching footsteps. Crouching low, Migoya’s palms flattered on the dirt road, and he willed himself almost into that earth, finding refuge and stability - almost a connectedness with the ground itself.
Breathe
Two men came into view. Recognising one as a local labourer and member of the Jinkotsu family, Migoya grew even more nervous. These were thugs - vicious men who undertook the physical intimidation that the Yakuza thrived on. Migoya knew that if he were spotted, there would be a beating, simply because he was smaller and weaker than these two bullies.
Breathe
Migoya’s heart began to race as the men drew ever closer. There were few jutsu that Migoya knew - mostly to do with controlling his friend Mikki. He practiced continuously with the small puppet, becoming quite proficient in the artform that was puppet control. In fact, he doubted that there was anyone at his age who was better than him - at least he hoped not.
Breathe
The footsteps came closer and Migoya, peering out through a rusted hole in the drum, saw the two figures up close. He scanned them, taking in the fact that one seemed to favour his left leg, the other having a large katana strapped to his back, unsheathed. The way they walked also indicated that they had been enjoying the booze - they probably helped with the heist in some way. As they drew closer, Migoya started to hold his breath.
“Whats this then”, one of the men grunted, reaching over to pick something off of the ground.
“Oh its a dolly. Give it here.”, the other responded with a slur.
“Nah I found it. Stupid thing”.
Migoya’s heart leapt into his throat - how could he be so stupid! He had left Mikki outside, and now… and now… he couldn't bear to think of what might happen. Pull yourself together moron, Migoya’s mind seemed to speak to itself. Think.
He looked again through the hole, watching the man swing Mikki by an arm. “What a piece of crap. Doesn't even have a face”.
Think. Surprise… lean to the right. Confound, mix, back peddle, assault, pull back…
Migoya gave a sharp intake of breath before he crawled out of the metal drum.
“Ah you found him. Thank you Sir - my sister was looking for it”, Migoya said, putting on a sad smile and opening his eyes wide like a doe.
“Well, tell her she can pay for it back. Any way is fine”, the lecherous man responded, clearly not caring about Migoya’s plight as he continued to swing Mikki around.
Migoya… it hurts
Mikki…
Where Migoya was there was now a blur of movement, almost inhumanly quick, as Migoya ran to the right side of the man - his wounded side - binding Mikki in puppet strings and activating one of the many traps within the doll. Thick black smoke erupted, plunging the area into darkness.
But Migoya was no stranger to the dark. He ran, positioning himself between the two men who were swearing.
“Jerk… wad.”, Migoya stammered loudly, trying to be brave.
The intended result occurred as Migoya heard the scraping of the katana out of a scabbard, and the obvious swing at where Migoya’s voice had come from. However, instead of the screams of a boy the swearing of the other man grew louder.
“Hells Ryoku - what are you doing… sheesh that hurt!”, Hyoshi screamed, clearly hit by the biting blade.
“Wheres the little bugger - Im gunna gut him!”, came Ryoku’s reply as he blindly swung in the darkness.
Running towards where he knew the wall sharply rose, Migoya began to run upwards, his feet connecting to the wall with chakra. He was blind, yet he knew this alleyway - it was his home and playground. Running up the wall, Migoya soon found himself outside the darkness of the smoke bomb, Mikki holding onto his small back.
Fear gripped him as the smoke began to clear. Yes, he could run away but he would always be running. No. This ended now.
For Mikki.
It was a difficult jutsu to master, especially for a young person like him, but it was needed now. Latching onto Mikki once more, Migoya guided the puppet to the top of the roof, where there was a clear view of the two gang members.
“Im here Ryoku. And you want to gut me? Oh well - here is your chance,” Migoya gloated, surprised at the darkness of the words. “But first… fireworks”.
Manipulating his fingertips, Migoya caused Mikki to unleash hell - well, hell in the form of several explosive devices that erupted the alleyway into flames. Screams could be heard from down below as Migoya quickly pulled the puppet towards him and leapt down into the alleyway, ignoring the heat.
He pulled a small, rusted kunai from his pocket and moved towards the two thrashing figures, frantically rolling on the ground to put out their scorched clothing.
“So… which of you is going to try to gut me first?”, Migoya said coldly as he moved closer to Ryoku. “You? I think you will need hands to do that…”
“Enough”.
Migoya paused, shocked that someone had snuck up on him as he spun to see a well dressed man standing behind him.
“Ryoku, Hyoshi - leave. See to your wounds and tell no-one that a… boy bested you.”
Migoya quickly turned to see the two men stagger to their feet, before rushing away down the alleyway, there clothing still smoking. He turned back.
“I… they... “
The man smiled, but it did not reach his eyes. “They were stupid. Drunk. Idiotic. You were none of those, and as such I will forgive this assault against my family. This once.”
Migoya looked to the ground.
“Who taught you to do that”, the man inquired.
“What? Oh… the fire. Um.. the academy.”
“Ah - a young shinobi. And a… unique one too”.
Migoya looked to the ground, clearly concerned at what this man wanted.
“What is your name?”
“Ginku Sir”.
“A lie. You will need to learn to do that better if you wish to survive”, the man chuckled. Turning on his heal the man started to walk away.
“I am Jinkotsu Ren”, he said quickly. “And you, Ginku, should follow me”.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
