Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Training Sheet: Sasaki Kotsuko — Iron Fist of Kumo (さてつ)

Re: Sasaki Kotsuko [Academy Student]

There were benefits and drawbacks to being so focused on something. By giving an activity your full attention, you allow yourself to be more aware of changing elements in a situation. You are able to understand the full scope of the issue, and to fully engross your mind into the events that were taking place. Minute details became apparent, and subtleties in the environment became clear as day. The downside of such concentration, though was precisely that: uninterrupted concentration. It meant that you failed to account for the other things that could, potentially, be around you. You failed to notice a couple of Jounin-level shinobi sneaking up behind you, plotting your inevitable and comedic downfall. Ko had been fully concentrating on the ANBU Sennin Saito. He never stood a chance at noticing the two sneaking up on him.

When Yomoko first spoke to him, Kotsuko jumped a little. His perch became unstable, and he shot his hand out to grab a nearby wooden beam, The sudden movement in the wood had caused it to creak a little, and a small cloud of dust floated down and settled on the table of the ANBU Sennin and his companions below. Wincing, Kotsuko realized that his cover was probably blown now. Looking back at the man to see who had caused such a disturbance, he was faced with a white haired man cloaked in a blue robe. He didn't know what to say to him. Before he could think of something, though, another voice spoke up from his other side. A familiar voice, Ko recognized it as the woman whom he had fought. Turning to look at her, he realized she was hanging upside down, like some sort of gigantic spider. Her mask only added to the effect, and the young boy would be lying if he said it hadn't startled him. His grip so tight that his knuckles were turning white, the young boy wondered what he'd done to get into a situation like this.

The way he saw it, the young boy had two options. The first is that he could give up in his venture of gaining information on his target, and try to shake these two off of him. That was unlikely, as they were both much stronger than himself. The woman alone was more than a match for him, let alone two enemies. The second option, though, had potential. It was risky, but could very greatly pay off for the young man. Did he dare? Looking between the two Jounin, who both expected an answer from the young boy, Kotsuko's face probably looked quite comical. "I'm, uh...spying on the ANBU Sennin. Do you...do you want to join?" Kotsuko had just asked a Jounin, and an ANBU, if they'd like to spy on their superior. Yeah, that was going to go well. At the very least they'd probably turn him in, and then he'd have a whole new issue to deal with. Good luck getting into the ANBU then...

...however, maybe, just maybe, they'd go for it. Maybe they would be in a good mood. Maybe they would want to mess with him further. Maybe the thought of being all sneaky sneaky would appeal to them? Whatever the reason, Kotsuko hoped they'd go along with it. He hoped their desire for mischief and fun outweighed their sense of duty and responsibility. But above all else, he hoped that the three sitting down at that table didn't look up and notice them all already. That would make all of this pointless, regardless of their answer.

The game had started. The pieces were in position, and all Kotsuko had to do now was guide everything along from the sidelines. Kunashi was doing his job nicely, even going so far as to ignore Kotsuko's third eye. That was perfect. The young boy grinned from his vantage point, running through a few handseals. This was almost too easy, as if Raiden himself had smiled down on the young child. It was a simple technique to use now, but could be used to great effect in this situation:through his third eye, conveniently placed in an uncompromising position, Ko began a recording technique. Luck is bullshit — leaving things to chance is dumb. Those were words that he lived by. Kotsuko wasn't one to leave loose ends, never allowing a plan of his to have an error. This plan was no different. In the event that Kunashi ever figured out that this wasn't a test, he'd need a way to defend his position. Framing Kunashi...that was the perfect way out. Kotsuko truly hoped it wouldn't have to come to that, but if that's what it took then so be it.

Ko continued to keep an eye on Kunashi, watching from outside the Vaults at his actions. He caught everything, from the moment he warped in through the door to when he exited it. However, one thing hadn't quite gone according to plan. Frowning, Kotsuko noticed that the pure-minded child had grabbed the wrong book. This was unacceptable. Ko needed the other one, not this one. Having gotten the footage he needed, Ko ended the recording technique before he made his next move. The other boy would never have known that Kotsuko had been recording his actions — this would be Kotsuko's little secret. Now that he couldn't compromise himself, Kotsuko set out to correct this error. His sands began to swirl around the other boy, making their presence known to him. They gently pushed him back, gently tickled at the hands holding the book. He pushed the boy's hand up, guiding things so that the young child would understand to look at the book. If he looked, the sands would circle around the incorrect word, trying to point out the error. However, this plan might be putting too much faith into Kunashi's ability to understand what he was trying to say.

Kotsuko split some of his sands off from the main bits. He moved it towards the door, slipping in between the lock mechanisms and opening the door. He'd do this himself, if he needed to. It had honestly just been a good idea to have someone else to blame instead. The sands could sneak into the Vault, retrieve the correct book, and then slip them out when Kunashi wasn't looking. Kotsuko just needed to make sure that the young boy wasn't suspicious of him — after all, this was a legitimate test they were going through. Only the best of the best ninja could steal from the Vaults...no doubt about that...

The young boy couldn't believe how easily Kunashi relinquished the book. This boy was incredibly naive, and Kotsuko thanked him greatly for that. With the book within his control, the young boy would be able to do things the proper way. Slipping his sands back into the vaults, the young boy retrieved the correct one. Even though his peer had failed to retrieve the correct book, Kotsuko would be able to correct things now. If nothing else, he'd make for a good fallback in case anything happened. Kotsuko even had recorded proof to back it up, which was much better than Kunashi's word. The sands slowly brought him the book he'd wanted, which he snatched out of the air with a furious curiosity as to the contents that it held. Settling down into a chair, the young boy began to read, the wrong book hidden from a stranger's gaze.

Page after page, there were scribbles and notes, all of them in Ancient Kumo. They seemed like fairly trivial things, unsuccessful experiments and mere postulations as to where the research was supposed to go. Ko frowned, having thought that this research would have been what he was looking for: the ability to dominate an object only with one's will, to channel life energy into an object and control it. It was possible, he knew. He'd seen the old swordsman Kotsurugi do it. Maybe it was an impossible dream, but the young boy didn't think so. He'd said he'd taught others to do it, which meant it was a kill that could be learned. Kotsuko would figure it out, one way or another. Maybe this book just wasn't the one that would contain the knowledge he sought.

It wasn't until the end, though, that something caught his eye. The research seemed to end, inconclusive and fruitless. However, after a few blank pages, a new set of handwriting took over. Different ink, different writing style, but curiously enough it was on the same subject. They were notes about, what seemed to be, a new iteration of the experiments done. Whoever wrote these notes seemed to be of a similar mindset to Kotsuko—h was trying to link the secrets of binding a soul to a weapon to those of binding a soul to another object. In the case of this research, a body.

Kotsuko kept reading, furiously injesting the swathe of information contained within these pages. It wasn't until he got to the end, though, that the trail became incredibly hot. The researcher responsible for these notes had signed his name: Isaki Kushin. Kotsuko stopped himself, realizing that he'd heard that name before. Getting up and searching through the bookshelves, he found a book of Kumogakure's officials in recent years past. It took him about two minutes to locate the very same name—this man had been the Medical Sennin of Kumogakure, not too long ago. It said that he was the one who formally legalized the learning and registration of Kinjutsu in the village, and was said to have been one of the greatest Kinjutsu Surgeons known to the village. It also mentioned that he'd gone missing a few years ago, for unknown reasons.

Ko put the book back, trembling. Not of fear, or anxiety, but of excitement. He had a grin on his face like none he'd ever had before. This was what he'd been looking for. This was his lead. Isaki Kushin was the man that Kotsuko had to find. He was the one who would be able to lead the young boy to the knowledge he needed. His goal was now to find Kushin, or at least some more of his work. If he found the man, he would have his answers.

Kotsuko snuck the book back into the Protected Records. It really was easy for him to do so, regardless of what he'd said. His abilities made it all too easy. Returning the book, Ko held the one that Kunashi had taken in his hand. He would hold onto this one, for now, in case he needed it later. He may need to plant the evidence at some point in the future, and to do that he'd need it for when the occasion was right. He wasn't beneath framing a friend to defend his own trail. Leaving the library, Kotsuko's path before him was clear. He would seek out the man who knew what he needed. He would find this knowledge, no matter what.

Left. Then a right. Then follow the hallway down a little bit. Kotsuko stopped just short of the corner of the hallway leading to the next corridor, not wanting to proceed any further yet. There was another camera there, watching the area for anything unusual. Before proceeding, Kotsuko gathered up his chakra in preparation. His magnetic chakras were potent, and the perfect tool for him in this situation. As he stepped out from around the corner, the young boy let out a small, concentrated burst of magnetic energy. The camera wouldn't stand a chance, the magnetic fields frying its circuity temporarily. Kotsuko didn't need long, only a few moments. He hurried through the hall, still maintaining the technique. Once he was past the camera's field of vision, he let go of the technique—the little mechanical eye came back to life again. This hospital was a tough place to get through, but the young boy was up to it. The front desk hadn't been nearly this hard. The people working there were too busy on their work, and the doctors walking around had too many patients to notice on young boy sneaking in. Once he'd gotten inside, things got a bit trickier. Not impossible, though. You just had to know when the right time to go was. With the right timing and a calm head, getting around was really not too bad. Besides, the young boy saw the whole thing more like a game than anything. It was an interesting challenge. One that he was up to.

The really hard part was the cameras. Kotsuko's magnetic fields would scramble their signal, creating nothing but static for as long as it was active. He knew there must be someone watching the video screens, but he usually only had the technique active for a couple moments at a time. He figured with the amount of cameras in this building, they couldn't possibly notice a camera going dead for a second or two every once in a while. Kotsuko knew there was a chance that he'd be discovered, but if that were to happen he was sure that he'd be able to figure something out. After all, he had a tongue as silver as the iron sands that he controlled. He'd be able to figure something out. Hopefully.

As he continued down the hallways, his coat flapped behind him from the speed at which he walked. The small gourds of iron sand at his hips swayed as he walked, their contents heavy and plentiful. His cloud grey eyes scanned the doors on either side of him, looking for the intended destination of today's excursion. He was about to turn down another corridor, figuring that it wasn't around here, that he spotted it: the supply room. Walking directly towards the unassuming door, Kotsuko noticed the standard lock and deadbolt on the door. The young boy smirked, thinking how easy this whole thing was. He waved a hand over the lock, his magnetic chakra turning the metal tumbles inside. It took no time at all for the deadbolt to snap open, allowing the door to swing freely on its hinges. The young boy stepped inside, locking the door behind him as he did. He figured that, from the outside, he'd want everything to look like how it normally would. Turning around, he took a look at the room before him. Beakers and instruments, tools of all sorts, and equipment that you wouldn't even think of were there. All well documented, too. Kotsuko grinned a little, making sure there weren't any cameras in this room. Seeing that there weren't he reached for his back pocket.

He pulled out a small black book and a pencil. The young boy flipped open the book, licking his fingers in between turning the page. He began to scribble something down, then took to walking down the aisles of the storage room. He would look at an object, then make a note. Sometimes he'd pick things up, looking at them and examining their materials. Then he'd write down more scribbles. As he did, he'd mumble just a slight bit to himself. "Erlenmeyer Flask, check. Volumetric Beaker, check. Precision surgical tools, check. IV drips, check..." His focus was intense. He was intent on this task, whatever it was. The young boy was still listening for any other sort of movement around him, but his attention was obviously on the supplies. So far he hadn't taken anything. He'd just written down notes. What the heck was Kotsuko up to?

Kotsuko continued to sweep through the aisles, cataloging the various instruments and tools available to him in this room. The one thing he noticed about the whole place was how sterile it all felt. It made sense, considering they were in a hospital, but it was still an odd feeling. For a person whose profession revolved around dirt, grit, and sweat, a clean and spotless environment was an odd contrast. It wasn't the worst thing ever—he could definitely get used to it. It was during his musings and conjecture that he first heard the odd sound. It was as if space itself was making a sound, almost like an ephemeral fabric tearing itself apart. It seemed to be coming from the door, if his ears served him correctly. He didn't stop his work. He merely glanced up from what he was doing occasionally to see if he could spot the source of this noise. Through the cabinets and glassware he spied locks of deep crimson, and heard an intimately feminine voice. It didn't take a genius to figure out who this person was, seeing as how everyone in the village had seen her face at the voting booth on election day. This was none other than the Medical Sennin, Shinrya Kitsune. The young boy had a few thoughts cross his mind when he realized it was her, but he'd save those for later.

From what he could hear from her, she didn't sound too happy. He couldn't understand why. Had he broken anything? Was anyone's life in danger because of his presence? Sure, he might be trespassing. But so what? He wasn't doing anything wrong, just examining things. Since she'd entered and started talking, she seemed to have put him in her line of sight from the end of the aisle. She stood there, waiting for his answers. He looked up at her for a second, his face calm and unyielding. "No, I saw it. I have excellent vision." Kotsuko turned back down to his book continuing with his work as he spoke. "I'm taking notes. Actually, seeing as you're here, I was wondering if you could answer a question or two for me?" Kotsuko flipped a few pages back, as if he were looking for something specific. He seemed to have found it, as he stopped flipping pages and instead ran his finger down what seemed to be a list. His voice was filled with inquisitive curiosity. "What would you say are the most important tools for medical research? Could be as many, or as few, as you think deserve mentioning. I figure that Shinrya Kitsune would be the best person to ask, seeing as you are the leading authority on this subject." Kotsuko was dead serious. He hadn't stuttered, he hadn't giggled, and he certainly hadn't hesitated. He really did just not understand the fact that what he was doing—being in this supply room without authorization—was not okay.

Just then, another figure entered the room, though not quite so flashily. Opening the door quickly, with a raised voice that was filled with suspicion, another figure walked into the room. Kotsuko wasn't able to get a look at them, though he figured that if he needed to see them then he would. The Sennin was blocking the exit, so it's not like he could walk over and see who it was. Whatever, it didn't bother him much. He merely continued on with his work. He did pause midway through reaching for another instrument as something crossed his mind. Something she said didn't quite make sense. "Why would there be a foot in here? Isn't the morgue down in the basement?" Kotsuko pondered over his own question for a moment before shrugging to himself and continuing on with what he was doing. He reached again for the same instrument that he'd gotten halfway through examining, and continued where he left off.

Approved!
New Ninjutsu: 210

Yen on Hand: 47,500
New Yen: 50,500

A Note on Previous Training: Actual ASP would be 52. Steel Slam's Mastery would have to go to a same-ranked skill, so going to Wind Scythe instead of Greater Wind Scythe. Meaning 590 - 258 - 280 = 52.

Seeing as how Kotsuko was not looking directly at the Medical Sennin when she first began to speak, he has to turn himself to face her. At first he merely turned his head; however, when he say her rapidly approaching down the aisle, his torso began to turn with him. He was a little shocked at how quickly she was moving, and it took him a second or two to realize she was reaching for the notebook in his off hand. There was nothing he could do. The material slid past his fingers as he tried to tighten his grip on the binding. He would not be lucky enough to keep a hold of it today. He watched in absolute horror as she flipped through his book, gazing upon it's contents. "The hell do you think you're doing?!" Horror turned to fury as she tore out the pages, reducing the work he'd done to nothing. What the hell was she thinking? He hadn't done anything to harm anyone—what was she getting so worked up over? He clenched his jaw as he stared her down, his eyes filled with a calm, but wrathful, anger. His voice was steady, but his eyes betrayed his inner thoughts. "Give that back." It was not a request, but a demand. He wanted the work he'd spent so much time on. His eyes never wandered from Kitsune's as he spoke.

"Curiosity isn't a sin. All I did was take some measurements and notes—that's hardly a danger to the people here." He held firm, standing his ground and his right to be here. Kitsune would realize he would not budge easily. "Restricted? That's exactly why I'm here! Your stuff isn't available for public use, so I was going to just make my own! How the hell else am I suppose to get any research done?" He scoffed as he spoke, as if her reasoning was the most incredulous thing he'd ever heard. As he stared down the Medical Sennin, however, the other person spoke. Kotsuko didn't have a lot of patience—as evidenced by him having broken into this restricted area instead of submitting an official request for the stuff he needed—and the medical practitioner began to hit a nerve with their words. Seriously, was brevity a lost art these days? He closed his eyes in exasperation, taking a deep breath in to steady himself. "I don't remember asking for your advice." He opened his eyes again, though this time they were directed at the annoying man. "If you have anything useful to say, then let me know." His eyes slid back to the Sennin, who still had his book and crumpled pages in her hands.

"If you'll let me just finish up here, I'll be out quickly. I just have a few more notes to take, and you'll never see me again." In all honesty, his "offense" was pretty minor. It wouldn't be implausible for them to just let him off with a warning of some kind, so he figured why not try for it? Perhaps they'd actually be understanding of his postition? He kind of doubted it, but still. Worth a shot. Just in case, however, he was formulating in his head what he might do if that didn't happen. Maybe grab the book, notes, and run? Distract them, then make a break for it? Combat wasn't an option, so the only tactics he could think up were related to misdirection and escape. However things played out, he kept one eye on his book that contained the rest of his notes. If nothing else, he didn't want to lose that.

Kotsuko's curiosity had been piqued in a way that he'd never known before. This creature, what was it? The way it spoke, with such confident glee, sent shivers down the young boy's spine. When it told him its name, Ko could feel the energy rush out of the room and then back in again. It was as if the name "Dwarf in the Flask" was something toxic and rancid, to the point that even the heat and light of this room wanted nothing to do with it. It recoiled, out of fear, respect, or perhaps even hatred, from the mentioning of this being's presence. It proceeded to answer his previous question, stating something that Kotsuko would have expected to come from his own mouth. The young boy's smile twisted and curved to match the little creature's. "I like your thinking, Dwarf in the Flask." Something about this meeting was unnatural. The young boy's primal instincts told him to run, to flee, and to purge his memory of ever having seen this little dwarf. And yet his mind...

...his mind reveled in the experience. Every nerve of his body felt like it was on the precipice of something horrible and great, his sense of wonder flooded with images of what laid before him. This creature was full of surprises. "Homunculus, eh?" The young boy chewed the name over, feeling its weight and its power. As he did, he heard the little creature speak once more, seemingly knowing about the young boy's name and origins. He tilted his head to the side a tad, seeing if he could look at the creature just differently enough to see how he was doing that. He'd have to ask him how he knew these things. These thoughts were quickly pushed aside, though, once the dwarf, Homunculus, presented his deal. And what a deal it was! The shinobi felt his gut get lighter, and he felt his legs begin to tingle. This was a morbid request. And yet, still, the young boy smiled. It was still that same morbid smile. "And if I do this for you, what is it you're going to give me?" The young boy looked into the creature's single red eye, expecting it to answer him. However, after a moment, the young boy placed the candle down on the table. He turned to leave. "You know what? Don't worry about it. You owing me a favor is plenty of repayment." And so, the young boy walked down the aisle, back towards the entrance from where he'd come in.

Once he was far enough away, the young boy stopped walking. It was time to see what he could use around him. He closed his eyes, and put one hand up to his head to hold his forehead. He focused his chakra for a moment, then mumbled, "Jiton: Tessei Shikai." All around him, things were starting to become more clear. He was able to see movements, disturbances, and fluctuations in the magnetic fields around him. Everything ferrous in the nearby area was giving off a signal, which he could use as a sort of visual map of the area. It was crude, and he had to make guesses as to what a lot of things were, but most of the time it was fairly obvious. Within his sphere of vision, the young boy could see three main sources of activity: one that was descending towards this area, and two more that seemed not to be moving at all. Kotsuko could only guess this was the guard doing daily rounds, and that he was heading down the main staircase. Smirking to himself, Kotsuko knew he had a few minutes before the man got here. Ending the technique, the young boy set off down the hall towards the stairs.

Positioned behind a corner, the young boy prepared himself. He drew out a large amount of iron sand from the gourds at his hips, and waited. A minute passed. Two minutes. Kotsuko could hear the tapping of the man's shoes against the stone steps. He was getting really close. This was it. As the man rounded the corner, he stopped out of confusion at seeing the young boy there. A moment later he came to his senses, but it was already too late. "Hold still, and keep quiet." The iron sands quickly wrapped around the man, covering his mouth and face first to keep him from crying out. It wouldn't do to have the other two guards poking their noses in here, would it? The sands quickly encased the rest of the man's body, covering him from head to toe in sand. His oxygen would be completely cut off, and given a few minutes he'd die of asphyxiation. Kotsuko didn't want to ruin the body if he'd be doing work on it in a minute, so a clean death would be much prefered. As he stood there, waiting for the man to just hurry up and die, he thought about what had just happened. He'd just commited an act of treason. He was standing by, as an innocent citizen of the Land of Lighting died by his own hands. Was he really okay with this? As he pondered over these questions, the young boy realized something about himself: he didn't feel anything from this. These ideas of treason, murder, and villainy didn't mean anything to him. He looked to the man who was slowly dying and realized he didn't give a damn. A smile crept over the young boy's face. He was happy, becuase he'd get to find out what it was the little Dwarf was planning to do with this body. He was ever so curious.

But, alas, it seemed the young boy had been caught up in his musings. It appeared the man had died, quite a few moments ago, in fact. Ko had missed his chance to see what death looked like—oh well, perhaps he'd see it another time. He began to head back inside the Restricted area when he realized there was something else he was forgetting. Summoning up some more sand, the shinobi fashioned a clone—not to look like himself, but of the recently deceased man. It was a perfect replica, actually. "Make sure those other two don't give us any trouble. Keep them away from here. Kill them if you have to, just make sure we're not disturbed." With a nod, the replacement guard went about the rounds that the first had been instructed to carry out. He'd probably tell the others that he'd taken a while since he'd dropped his keys in the dark. Probably.

Kotsuko, on the other hand, proceeded back towards the little Dwarf, Homunculus. The young boy found a spot on the table that was vacant enough, and deposited the now limp body on the table. Walking back around, he picked up the candle he'd set down earlier so that he might see a litle better when speaking to his new friend. "One fresh corpse, as you asked. You said something else about specific and delicate work, yes?" The young boy looked at the creature insistently. He didn't seem to show any sense of having just done something awful. He'd already come to terms with this. What he was more interested in, above all else, was sating his insatiable curiosity. Curiosity wasn't a sin, after all.

Kotsuko smirked a little at Junko's comments to the student in front of him—wow, that was weird saying he had a student—implying a sort of rough and tough mentality to training. It certainly fit with the theme of what they were learning about, but perhaps it was a tad premature to throw him into that sort of situation? Kotsuko observed the Mochizuki's actions, glancing up from his book periodically to see how he was doing. For a while, the older shinobi seemed to just be focusing on drawing his chakra. This was to be expected, considering that he'd never manipulated an element like this. Earth jutsu were an odd art, very unlike the other elements. It required a certain mindset, a determination and conviction that had to be as solid as a rock. If you faltered for but a moment in your attitude, the element itself would crush you. Users of earth jutsu were typically very sure of themselves, and were often hard to deter. Tomo would have to learn to think differently if he wanted to master this element.

After a while, though, it seemed he'd managed to accomplish something. Though, it wasn't what Kotsuko had exactly intended to happen at this stage. The rock flew straight into the man's chest, and seemed to stick there. Looking closely, the young boy could see that he'd managed to turn the rock to clay. This was certainly a good thing, but that wasn't the end of it. The ground underneath the man begin to splinter and break, chunks of rock flying directly at him. It didn't take long for the man to be covered in rocks, creating a shield of earth that protected his whole body. Raising an eyebrow, the young boy found this to be rather curious. He'd expected the man to have trouble starting the technique, however it seemed that the man had the opposite problem: he'd put way too much chakra into his endeavor. Exhaling, Kotsuko spoke up so that the man could hear him through all those pebbles in his ears. "You're giving it too much, Tomo. You put way too much juice in and overdid it. This isn't like wind jutsu, where you can just increase the power as much as you want. Stronger winds make your techniques more powerful, but more force with a jutsu like that will get you crushed to death. Earth is a powerful element, meaning you can't lose control with it."

It seemed that Tomo was a hands on learner. He needed experiences to stimulate his growth, and that would never be achieved just by talking about it. It was a pain, but Kotsuko supposed that he had an idea on how to potentially help him. The young boy extended his hand, focusing his energies on the shroud of rocks that Tomo had gotten himself into. Gently, and carefully, the young boy began to alter the rocks around him, turning it instead into a mass of sand. Tomo would be trapped in a cocoon of sand, unable to move or use handseals. The young boy held his book in his left hand, but wasn't looking at it at all. He needed to concentrate in order to avoid constricting the man to death. "You need to control the amount of chakra you put into this. If you do too much like last time, you may just end up entombing yourself in there. Be gentle, and deliberate. The earth never moves unless it has to." Kotsuko was supplying his own version of "be the element" with this little speech. It's not because he couldn't think of anything better, but because Junko had been spot on with that comment. Earth was an element you had to feel, in every part of you, to master. "Sand jutsu are a mixture of earth and wind, so this shouldn't be too difficult for you. Consider it your only act of kindness from me. Concentrate on controlling your chakra deliberately. Using too much might just be a death sentence." Kotsuko wasn't going to sit here and let the man make the same mistake multiple times. If the man's problem was giving it too much, then the boy figured it'd be fastest to force him out of the habit. Underdoing it would be acceptable. But overdoing it? If Tomo couldn't break past that, then this might be the last element he'd ever attempt to master.

Kotsuko smirked at the older man's screams of protest, cursing the young boy and calling him crazy. Chuckling lightly, the young boy responded, "Crazy or not, no use in complaining. Or should I make it harder for you?" Of course he was bluffing, but still. The threat could still be used if Tomo found this task a bit too hard. Having something worse happen to you was generally a pretty good motivator. The young boy continued to maintain he technique, still focusing every bit of his attention towards holding back from using his full prowess with it. Considering its purpose was initially to completely restrict an opponent's movements, Kotsuko found it very difficult to use it to its half potential. Despite having a mastery over both earth and wind ninjutsu, it was hard to make something into something it wasn't. Perhaps this was just as much Kotsuko's training as it was Tomo's?

As the young boy observed Tomo's progression, he began to gain a level of satisfaction from this. The older man was actually getting it, and was properly learning to move the sands away from his body. It wasn't much, but it was certainly enough to wriggle his way free. Kotsuko was impressed. The older man was picking things up rather quickly, despite a few odd hiccups in his progress. When the dual-haired man got into his current predicament, though, the young boy found it to be very comical. Indeed, he could empathize with the man's struggle before his eyes, and decided that this was perhaps going too far. The older man's plea for help had been understood by Kotsuko, and the young boy moved to release the technique as a result. Still smirking, though, the young boy spoke again to his pupil. "Very well, that's more than enough for me to see. You are capable of manipulating the earth—or at least the part of the sand that was earth—to move to your will." At this, the sand around the older man fell away, having served its intended purpose. However, the smirk on the young boy's face had not let up at all. It was still there, as if the young boy knew something. "Now that you've gotten a feel for the movement of earth jutsu, we're going to move onto the next aspect. Like I said, earth jutsu has many facets and elements to it..." The young boy reached out with his hand to help the older shinobi up. It was a kind gesture, and one that was universally seen as beneign and helpful. If Tomo accepted the young boy's offer of help, Kotsuko would help to pull the Mochizuki up.

That is, until the next phase of the training went into effect. At the point where the young boy had grasped Tomo's hand, a ring of dense metal began to form on the man's wrist. It was a huge slab of metal, that weighed way more than a person should be able to lift, that instantly brought the man's hand back down to the ground. He would never lift that, and would be forever stuck to the ground with a weight like that on him. Kotsuko made no motion to help him, instead looking down at him from the same place he'd been standing. His voice was as calm as ever. "The next thing you'll learn is how to manipulate the weight of earth techniques. The Weighted Rock Technique is a very useful skill to master, and can allow for some very complex strategies and tricks. You already show a bit of an aptitude for manipulating earth jutsu, so now you'll have to take that skill to the next level. Lift that weight above your head, and we'll move on to the next task." This time Kotsuko didn't get out his book to read. He was watching this man with his cold, grey, eyes. He was observing him, testing him, and challenging him to succeed. Kotsuko was curious, now, how far this man could take his latent abilities. So far he'd been lucky to pull out as much as he had—however, without a true aptitude for earth ninjutsu he'd never complete this task. Did he have what it took to free himself?

"No." Kotsuko's eyes were steely as the ANBU Sennin told him this was over, standing out of his seat as if that made it final. The young boy would not move from his seat, nor would he take his eyes off of the man. That mask was no better than a determined will, keen on masking one's intentions. Who's will would be stronger, in this case? "You're mistaken. It is no rumor, but rather a highly intelligent guess. Call it whatever you will, but the fact of the matter is everyone is talking about it. The higher ups are talking about it, and that's not something you discredit. It's too much coincidence. If you're trying to tell me that nothing is amiss, then you're a fool for thinking me so blind." Kotsuko's voice was steady but sharp. Some might think that he was way out of line by talking to an ANBU Sennin in such a way, but Kotsuko knew that he wouldn't get anywhere with this man unless he did just that. He didn't have the luxury of being cryptic anymore. "Let's be clear then: of course I want to know the medical branch's secrets. Of course I want to learn what I need to learn. Is that wrong? Do you not think that everyone who joins the medical branch does so because it's fascinating and interesting? It's the most enticing thing one might find as an intellectual. I don't apologize for that, nor do I see anything wrong with it. Not every doctor is altruistic."

And then there was the issue of his implicit barring from the ANBU Branch. That wouldn't be good for Kotsuko, given everything at hand. "Why are you so afraid of rules, sir? They're not that special. I mean, do you honestly think you can fight fire without fire? You're not the village police force, sir. You're the covert division tasked with killing shinobi threats to the government. When you kill a man, does that not also break the law?" The young boy's whole body was still as he asked his questions and made his points. There was a certain hypocrisy he saw in this man, which he did not want to let slip. "Let me ask you: if I was truly intent on harming the government of Kumogakure, would I be telling you how I intend to 'steal medical secrets?' No. Do you think I'm just going to take these secrets and run with them? No. My plan was to bring that skill set here." He paused for a second and cocked his head. "You don't have the knowledge. You don't have the technology. You don't have the materials. And that's why I came here today. I can't assist the ANBU now, but perhaps I can assist the ANBU when the time is right. You must need someone to run your R&D Department, yes? I highly doubt whoever runs it now possesses the full knowledge of a trained medic. I'm offering my services in the future, to the ANBU. I'm not some thief." Hehe, that's a little ironic, huh? He'd entered the Medical Division right after breaking into the hospital to find out what kind of equipment they had. How very funny. "You may not agree with my methods, but frankly I don't agree with yours. We don't have to agree, but that doesn't mean I can't still be valuable to your branch."

Kotsuko would wait to see what he had to say. Would he kick him out for speaking more, or would he actually consider his words? Kotsuko knew which he hoped for more.
